Everytime I visit my father's village (Trabazos de Cabrera, León) I try to capture its beauty, hidden in every corner of every ruined house. This balcony door works as a window to paradise, containing the peace and the vitality of the forest (wich unfortunatelly burned out two summers ago) behind it...

A window on the Powerhouse

(Fountains Abbey) I did a version without the chairs too, but prefered this one. Oh, and it really was this yellow.

After passing through killer ants, monster bees, hobbit bugs and swinging self-murderer Achilles (who is alive, as he forgot to hang himself with the heel), you will reach the window! When you open it, you’ll see His majesty Bungo I, the Cabbage Eater, sitting on a crouton throne! He’ll look at you strictly and sing:

Keep smiling, keep shining

Knowing you can always count on me, for sure

That's what Wombles are for

For good times and bad times

I'll be on your side forever more

That's what Wombles are for!

A stained glass window in the north transept of the Notre-Dame-du-Roncier Basilica. It was made in 1932 in memory of Anne de Rohan, it shows her dressed as a nun in the second from the left, second from the bottom panel of the window. There is also the coat of arms of rohan family at the bottom of the window. Josselin, Brittany

Each window is an opportunity...

Window with twilight

Located on the graceful southern shores of Lake Mälaren, Mariefred is a tiny, quintessentially Swedish village about an hour west of Stockholm. It has narrow streets where the well-kept wooden houses and little squares have scarcely changed in decades.

I am always fascinated by windows and the stories they hold behind them.

At one point last week, this window sprung a leak. Hence the lack of accoutrements and the desk shoved off to the side. There is still a foot of snow on the roof yet to melt with more snow in the forecast.

One of the wonderful old buildings still sitting abandoned on Mare Island, Solano County, Northern California. Happy Windows Wednesday!

A little history . . .

Mare Island became the first United States naval base on the West Coast in 1854. Spanish ship captain Don Juan Manuel de Ayala y Aranza touched here in 1775. It received its present name from Mexican calvary commander General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo in 1830.

During World War II, the shipyard turned out scores of ships and submarines, assembling new destroyer escorts with prefabricated sections brought in from as far away as Colorado. Warships damaged in battle were also repaired and refitted in the base's drydocks. By the end of the war, Mare Island had produced 17 submarines, four submarine tenders, 31 destroyer escorts, 33 small craft and more than 300 landing craft.

Mare Island's sprawling National Register historic district boasts hundreds of buildings built between 1854 and the end of World War II, including ranking officers' mansions (c. 1900), duplexes for junior grade officers (1940), and ammunition depots (1856-1960s).

There is something about old buildings I really like. Danforth Technical School has lots of nooks and crannies and architectural interest both inside and out. I love using the print studio in the evening when they offer studio time. Took my kids on a field trip to the school where they used an old classroom in the basement. This is an ancient staff bathroom in the basement.

For Window Wednesdays.

Looking down the High st. from the shelter under the town clock at Sheringham, North Norfolk.

A favourite spot for the old 'Shannocks' to sit and mardle.

Explanation? A 'Shannock', a person born in Sheringham. 'Mardle', chat about anything and everything.
