In 1910 stock broker William Porter built the colossal granite mansion “Foxcroft” on the top of Fox Hill, selected for the commanding views it afforded. In 1911, while traveling back to New York after a weekend at Foxcroft, Porter was killed in an automobile accident. He was survived by his wife Ruth Halliwell Porter, who was returning from a European vacation aboard the Lusitania at the time of the crash.
In 1913, Ruth married Warren Van Slyke and renamed their part-time retreat the Van Slyke Castle. When Warren died in 1925, Ruth moved to the castle permanently and remained there until her death in 1940. On March 1, 1949, the Castle was purchased by Celeste and Robin MacFadden, who subsequently sold to Suzanne S. Christie on July 2, 1951. Between 1951 and 1962, Suzanne S. Christie was to become Suzanne S. O’Sullivan then Suzanne Noyes Brussel. As strange as it may seem, Suzanne (who was the sole owner) abandoned the mansion between husbands, and left it to the mercy of the elements. In 1959, the magnificent structure was reduced to ruins in a fire of undetermined origin.
On August 18, 1978, Suzanne Brussel sold the ruins to Bruce Ademski of the Ademski and Van Saun Home Improvement Company. Ademski then subdivided the 15.9 acre parcel into three 5 acre lots. On February 22, 1980 the State of New Jersey filed a “Declaration of Taking;” which informed Ademski that his lots would soon be seized by the NJDEP at a non-negotiable price. Shortly after the receipt of this document, Ademski’s lots became part of Ramapo Mountain State Forest.
In the early part of the 20th century, Clifford MacEvoy purchased about 2600-acres of what would become Ramapo Mountain State Forest. In 1976 the area became state lands using Green Acres and federal funds. The majority of Park acreage was conveyed by the trustee of the Clifford MacEvoy estate to the State of New Jersey to be included as part of the existing Ramapo State Forest.

I've realised that I haven't uploaded an autumn photo this year, yet, and of course, that won't do ;) So here you go: golden October glory at the Rudolph-Wilde-Park, a public park in the Berlin borough of Schöneberg. The park, which was conceived in 1906, and which is named after the first mayor of Schöneberg (before Schöneberg became a part of Berlin in 1920), Rudolph Wilde, is a 6,6 sq green oasis amidst one of the most densely built-up areas of Berlin. Most conveniently, the park is only a 15-20 minute walk away from where I live.
You may wonder why I subtitled this image The Beauty and the Beast. Well, on that walk, and also when I processed the photos I'd taken on that walk, I thought that in this place you can find both what is so beautiful and also ugly or aggravating about my hometown. The park itself is very lovely, there is a huge playground, there is the small lake (which you can see here) in front of the historic subway station, there are lots of bunnies (yes!), but there are also trash and graffiti. Not that I generally dislike graffiti, but for me, it's kind of a double-edged sword. In Berlin, you can find marvellous, artfully done graffiti and street art which I really like, but there also is the aggressive tagging, and I usually don't like that at all, especially when it's done on carefully restored historic buildings such as the Carl-Zuckmayer-Brücke of which you can see a small part in the lower left corner of this photo. The bridge is part of the heritage-protected underground station "Rathaus Schöneberg".
The image is an HDR made from exposure bracketing (three photos) which I've combined in HDR Efex. Since I'd photographed directly against the sun (I almost couldn't see a thing on the display), there are a few blown-out parts on the left which even the exposure bracketing couldn't prevent. I tried to fix it in LR, and I think it doesn't look too bad because it's just the upper left corner. I hope you like it anyways ;)
Have a nice weekend, dear Flickr friends!

Groningen is a city where you can experience everything in the most diverse areas. Groningen is also a city where you only have to walk a few minutes in certain residential areas for the most beautiful nature or parks. On the background you can see an impressive artwork. Unfortunately I am not yet sure what the story is behind the artwork. This photo I took near a residential area at Tijmpad. it is really very close to the Speenkruidstraat where I was staying.

In the Altmühltal nature park in the Bavarian Suffersheim in Germany you can enjoy hiking and cycling. I also took my earlier upload of the impressive cloud party there, but this aside. During my walk there I walked along this atmospheric winding path and it was a real pleasure to inhale the natural scents of the freshly cut grass on one side and the scent of the wheat field on the other. In addition, it was not only a pleasure for the sense of smell, but the image of the forests on the mountains in the distance was also a visual treat for my eyes.

One of many hiking paths winding up into the mountains of the Glencoe area in Scotland.
The mountains of Glencoe are built from some of the oldest sedimentary and volcanic strata in the world. They were subsequently moulded, sheared and repositioned by a geological event known as a ‘cauldron subsidence’ which took place 380 million years ago.
The effects of glaciation, and millions of years and many cycles of erosion have subsequently carved and worn the rocks away into the formation we know today. Glencoe is bounded on its northern side by the famous Aonach Eagach or ‘notched ridge’ – a pinnacled ridge linking three peaks over 3000 feet which stretches for over three miles.
Indeed it is the narrowest ridge on the UK mainland. In contrast, the glen’s southern flanks are a complex assemblage of peaks, ridges and valleys which rise up above the peat hags and scattered lochans of Rannoch moor and extend to the shores of Loch Leven, some ten miles distant.

I already uploaded photos of the Westduinpark in The Hague near Scheveningen. Wednesday I was in the same park, but then the part near Kijkduin. This is photo number 5 in the new series. It is an impressive dune area that runs approximately from Scheveningen harbor to Kijkduin. There are Scottish Highlanders in the protected nature reserve to control the vegetation and there is really a lot to see in terms of flora and fauna. It is a combination of dunes, open sand area and forest. It is very special there because dunes and forests alternate and sometimes merge into one another. On warm sunny days, a lot of women walk barefoot on the sandy areas, to experience the ultimate feeling of freedom. There are hiking trails as well as cycle paths and horse riding trails in the very interesting park. A lot of people are really impressed by the vegetation, bunkers from the Second World War, steep dune hills and the impressive viewpoints. The view at those points of the beach and the sea and on the other side the buildings of the city is truly phenomenal. Come there once and experience a invisible blanket of oasis and peace. You will imagine yourself in a kind of paradise where worries and problems do not exist and where the war of thoughts in everyone's head disappears like snow in the sun for a moment in time, because freedom is in each of us.

I'm going to photograph this scene again and again, in as many ways as possible - exploring weather conditions, light - whatever it has to offer. I'll be curious to see what shows up.

The fence you can see is an electric fence to keep wild boar out of the vines. Wild boar are everywhere here.
Happy Sunday!
I'll be quick, as I have to go to the city this morning and roads may be bad with snow and a return to cold weather overnight.
No sun this morning but it was very sunny at the start of the day this was taken. I have been playing around with sunstars. Simply include the sun and stop down to a small aperture and voila. What I am finding challenging is the processing. In order to get detail in the sun you pretty much end up underexposing everything else. Here there is glare coming off of the snow as well, but hey who does not like to give a challenge their best shot.
I will likely get around to commenting later this evening. Enjoy your day all!
Over the last few years, our city has made major improvements to our local park. The most recent one was paving a lovely accessible path into the park. In these pandemic times, local people have been walking through the park on a daily basis. It’s a huge park with a river, large children’s playground, a small restaurant with indoor dining and take out, and many hiking trails. There was a light drizzle on this day we walked through which made the tree trunks stand out. Soon we will see lots of song birds in the park. The park is appreciated by many locals as a place to find exercise and calm during challenging times. The city has made a great investment in its people especially for times like these.
