A gust of wind from our big storm Saturday, October 25, 2014, literally punched a hole in the wall of this abandoned building fronting on U.S. Highway 101 in Port Orford, Curry County, Oregon. Winds up to 94 mph hit our area and did significant damage to our commercial dock. Initial estimates are at $400,000 in damage to the dock and its facilities.
Designed to inspire and excite the public about engineering and acoustics, art and architecture, Aeolus was inspired by a trip to (IRAN), where Jerram met a Qanat desert well digger who spoke of “the wells singing in the wind”. The associated Aeolus Outreach Programme seeks to inspire curiosity and wonder about the science of sound, furthering interest in this diverse discipline through the exploration of this otherworldly work of art. With its web of nylon strings, Aeolus functions as a giant Aeolian wind harp. The vibrations in the strings are transferred through skins covering the tops of some tubes, projecting sound down through the tubes towards the viewer standing beneath the arch. If the weather is still, more subtle sounds can be heard, when the structure captures whispers and amplifies them like a seashell does. When the clouds and sun move across the sky throughout each day the visual experience for the public will continually shift and change, reflecting the contemporary architecture of the Quayside, such as The Imperial War Museum. httpwww.youtube.comwatchv=vL1lI7YUtGI
Here the model is standing directly in front of an empty window frame. The sky was very grey and cloudy so it was beautiful light coming through. The ambient was metered about 1 stop under.

It's hard to describe how beautiful the form of this thing is - it looked graceful as a whale even tethered to a long truckbed. It was jaw-droppingly beautiful.
