Bowling Green is home to Ohio’s first utility-sized wind farm. There are four turbines that are 257 feet tall. These turbines, that are as tall as a 30-story building, generate up to 7.2 megawatts of power—enough to supply electricity for some 3,000 residents. Located about six miles from the city, the turbines can be seen for miles and have become a local attraction.
Each blade on these turbines is 134 feet long and weighs 22,000 pounds. The entire rotor which includes three blades is 77,175 pounds! The blade speed is 16.8 rotations per minute, so the speed at the tip of each blade is 178 miles per hour!!
They begin producing energy when the wind speed reaches 9 miles per hour, and there is peak energy production at 32 miles per hour.
At the site, a solar-powered kiosk provides information from visitors including current information on wind speeds and the amount of energy being produced by the turbines.
The first two turbines were dedicated on November 7, 2003, and the second two turbines were dedicated on November 19, 2004.
The spring winds are in full force this week...gorgeous days though! Supposed to be in the 80's today, so more fun outside for us!!
Taken on the western end of the delta. Kite Boarder goes flying by as the Wind Generators draw electricity as the air blows past. The kite boarder was moving as fast as a speed boat without the gasoline nor pollution. At times kite boarders would become airborne momentarily.
Siemens Canada announced that it will supply, install and commission one of the largest Canadian wind turbine orders from Samsung Renewable Energy Inc. The wind turbines for the K2 Wind project will be located in Goderich in southwestern Ontario. Along with the South Kent Wind project in Chatham-Kent, this 270-megawatt (MW) project will be the largest wind farm in Ontario, generating clean power for approximately 100,000 Ontario homes
We saw this going along the road in Denmark. It was _HUGE_. It took a while before we worked out that it was the generator for the top of a wind turbine.
Offshore wind turbine between Denmark and Sweden. This is what made my trade my kayak for a sailboat!

The Cheyne Court Windfarm is a 26 turbine facility run by Npower opened (by Ed Milliband - remember him!?) in 2009.
This was made very quickly as an experiment into adding movement to a still image used in a video fusion project that mixes video and stills. The wind machine is obviously a graphic, but like I said, it's only an experiment. I'm also going to have a play with layered pan and scan, where a near field object tracks faster than the background.
Drive passed the wind farm yesterday on a very dull day but did manage to get a shot of a number of wind turbines. There are a total of 215 wind turbines in operation and is the largest onshore wind farm in the UK.

Land sailors wait for wind on the Alvord Desert.
With its Bonneville Salt Flats like bottom and frequent winds, the Alvord Desert is a favorite world-class destination for land sailors who achieve speeds of 97 miles per hour.
The limp wind sock tells the story of why this sailor is not rolling.

(I think I like this color version more than the black&white one I posted a few weeks ago)
A very windy Kirkjufjara beach, Iceland
This is what my neighborhood looks like after severe thunderstorms passed through early this morning. At the end of this side street the fallen trees completely cover the road. I saw small birds laying on the ground apparently killed when they were thrust against the side of homes by the strong winds. This is the worst widespread storm damage I have ever seen.

Blue skies may be delightful at times but in the midst of severe drought, they are frightful. I took these images off the television at lunchtime today ~ unusually warm temperatures, gusting Santa Ana winds, not a drop of rain in sight. We're under Red Flag warnings, which means severe fire danger. I hope I don't see any fire more devastating than the two pictured. These are frightening enough!
I'm going to be scarce this week, my Flickr friends! I'm spending the next three days with Amy, my daughter, I'm happy to say!
Thanks so much for showing up and for your support! Have a wonderful week, yourselves! I'll get back to you again after Friday!
