trying to 'test' a laptop. hd crapped (bad sectors), batt is dead, kb is shot, lcd flickers... so i had some fun, to turn it in a crude media device. found a smaller hd, usb/ps2 wireless kb/mouse (on usb), wifi usb adapter, and rigged up a fan controller w/ pot for noise/speed control for cooling (also taking power from the usb hub)...

oh yeah, and it don't want to switch to external tv out on boot (probably due to win98 and drivers), so i did a quick 'sendkeys' procedure in vb, that runs on startup, that switches to tv output in display manager.

I need a Mac to be able to export Game Maker games to iOS and Mac OS X, so I ordered this used one two weeks ago. I only got it today because it was sent to the wrong adress first. The display is pretty special as its from a time where flatscreens were pretty uncommen and this special one was extremely expensive than. But the quality shows and its still as good as new and fits the design philosophy apple applied much later pretty well (that display is older than the first, colored iMacs). The Mac Mini is pretty old, too, but it runs well enough. Astonishingly there is a bug in the memory management so that you have to manually free it sometimes. Win98 was the last time Microsoft was so lazy.

Yet its still able to run pretty much anything I've thrown at it, maybe the SL client will show how slow it really is ;-)

I still cannot publish the games, though. You have to pay 99 Dollars for each OS per year to do so, and that will have to wait until the end of the month.

As we attempt to rebuild a MAME machine, I have downgraded the OS from Ubuntu to MS Win98. This was largely because the machine will be frequently powered-off w/o a graceful shutdown (i.e. pulling out the plug). Linux *hates* this... and I don't want to get phone calls all the time about corrupted file systems. Ergo, we are trying again with Win98.

Putting Win98 onto newer hardware is HARD. Much harder than it should be. Grrr. I have to dredge up lots of forgotten knowledge and use my Arcane Lore skillz. Neurons I would like to have freed up for more productive uses long ago.

Does anyone else remember HIMEM.SYS and /LOADHIGH. How did we put up with this for so long? It's official - I HATE Windows-98 and its evil, weak driver model. Bad Microsoft. Bad Intel! No biscuit!

And it's got a touchsreen! After 35,000 months of combing the web in search of Win2000 drivers, I finally found sound, video, modem AND touchscreen drivers that were not Win 95 or (that virus known as) Win98. Allegedly, there are WinXP drivers but I don't want to burden this Pentium III 500 MHz with 196M RAM by forcing XP on it. Win2000 is certainly a good enough OS.

In this short clip, I click around, using my finger to do mouse-oriented tasks. The touchpad on these models is pretty tiny and because it is SO RUGGED, you must use the same amount of finesse that the average police officer would use, which is to say: absolutely none.

I open a few apps and maneuver my way around in them. I must say that after using this touchscreen for the past two days, I don't want to go back to the touchpad. Star Trek touch panels, here we come!

The old WIN98 from 2001, then Windows XP, Windows 7 then the hard drives failed and it was just too slow driving the Polaroid Scanner so got ebm Computers to build a new WIN 7 Tower PC with SSD 12th Mar 2022 for $520.

They took a long time to find a way to put in an ADVANSYS SCSI card for Windows 95/98, NT & 2000 into the new GIGABYTE tower PC…

I now use the ebm WIN7 to scan slides, move them via SanDisk USB drive to the Windows 10 HP PC, where I may use ThumbsPlus to rename them and perhaps remove some dust or crop one or two.
