Working on issue 3 of Morningstar. I've been trying to improve my comic book backgrounds and try to give a sense of space in each issue. The environments for current page I'm doing laying out, just are not cutting it.

After looking at some photos of caverns online, I realized I needed to go back to my basic tool for solving almost any visual problem. Thumbnailing. At first I was just doodling, trying to separate planes into foreground, middle ground, and background, with progressively lighter or darker values. By the time I finished those, I started developing, or re-remembering a feel for abstract shapes as compositional framework to make forms emerge or recede in space.

A couple of years ago I took a layout and composition class with Art Center professor Will Weston www.willwestonstudio.com/wws/. His class was invaluable for wrapping my head around the concepts of merging composition with depth and light/dark values to create convincing environments. He has a bunch of free resources from his lectures available on his site, so it's well worth stopping by.

After re-analyzing the page a bit more, it made me go back and erase the first panel completely and recompose it to have both better space and composition. I even realized I could add a subliminal feeling of peril by making the rock formations surrounding the character take on the shape of jagged teeth, as though he were trapped in the mouth of a horrible beast about to consume him.

Yeah, sometimes, when a drawing isn't working, the only answer is to roll up your sleeves, do some research and thumbnail the hell out of it until you come up with better options.

This is a student drawing (4 Stitches out of a 30 Stitch homework assignment). I drew on top of it. I'm discussing eye paths, focal points, the bean, and dark over light in line work.
