Ripening Blackberries

Otherwise known as bramble, blackberry, European blackberry, black heg, wild blackberry and bramble berry.

UK folklore dictates that blackberries should not be picked after Old Michaelmas Day in October, as the Devil has sullied them. Brambles used to be planted on graves to stop sheep grazing, but might also have had the more superstitious purpose of keeping the dead in.

Brambles provide an important source of nectar for Brimstone and Speckled Wood butterflies; fruits for Song Thrushes and Yellowhammers; and hiding places for Hedgehogs and Dormice.

The infamous "Beach Plum" was specifically mentioned in the Warner Land Grant, which provided access to the "granted lands" for inhabitants of Lewes and Sussex to go upon those lands for picking 'plums' and other activities. From 1970, when the Army attempted to bulldoze the Great Dune, until the lawsuit over the Warner Land Grant was settled twelve years later in 1982, the beach plum was repeatedly referenced in legal documents back and forth. Today, beach plums abound in the dunes around Lewes and are excellent for making jams, juices, etc.

is a tropical and subtropical vine widely grown in Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean for its edible fruit. Its many varieties differ substantially in the shape and bitterness of the fruit. Each plant bears separate yellow male and female flowers. In the Northern Hemisphere, flowering occurs during June to July and fruiting during September to November. It is a frost-tender annual in the temperate zone and a perennial in the tropics. It grows best in the USDA zones 9 to 11.

A close-up cluster of Common Snowberries (Symphoricarpos albus), glowing like pearls against a deep black background.

During the witch panic in Europe, it was believed that the devil himself pricked women with a blackthorn spine as a form of initiation and proof that a person was a witch. This was the origin of the ‘witches mark’ which later came to mean any mark, mole, scar or skin tag on the body which indicated you were guilty of being a witch. - From Kate Goth (the Witch Wench). thewitchwench.com/2020/11/25/blackthorn-prunus-spinosa/

Blackberries are delicious spontaneous fruits, but the tips of the bramble are also edible, they can be used in cooking in omelettes or dried for herbal teas, rich in vitamin C and with astringent properties

Hippophae rhamnoides, known as sea buckthorn, is a thorny shrub in the oleaster family that often grows in coastal areas and on dry, sandy soils. It has an extensive root system and can fix nitrogen from the air with the help of root nodule bacteria, which helps it thrive on nutrient poor ground. Sea buckthorn is dioecious, meaning there are separate male and female plants, and only the female plants produce the bright orange berries. The fruits are well known for their high vitamin C content and are used for products such as juice, purée, and oil. In autumn and winter, the berries also provide an important food source for many birds and other wildlife.
