Sincholagua, 4873 m, is one of the many eroded and extinct volcanoes that can be found in the Cotopaxi national park. His sharp pointy peaks are the eroded leftovers of volcanic activity. He is regularly covered by thick mist and clouds and stormy weather is very common on this peak. This is one of the rare occasions when it was completely clear with a beautiful blue sky and a magnificent sunset light.

"Sandstone Coloration is:

• A function of varying amounts of iron (mineral hematite - Fe) that imparts red color.

• Initially red, soon after sand grains are deposited and buried.

•Red where thin scattered films of hematite coat sand grains, and white where the thin films of hematite have been removed by bleaching.

• Facilitated by how easily fluids can move through a sandstone due to different textures of the sandstone (e.g., how loosely or tightly sand grains are packed together).

•Variable even on a scale of fractional inches where thin red

layers alternate with white layers.

This is again a function of microscopic textures in the sandstone.

•Affected by oxidizing fluids thatencourage hematite precipitation (red color) as well as reducing fluids that bleached the sandstone by removing the hematite (white color).

•A property that may have changed over time and involves

fluids and processes that occur over tens of millions of years. "

My goal on this hike was Gobbler's Knob and maybe the Marine Crash Memorial, but as I humped along it was like turning a page in a book or watching a play unfold. Each bend in the trail brought a new scene, new story, and having it shrouded in fog just added to it. I could have stayed here all day and waited for a show, I hope the guy in the tent did.

Longing...nowadays we cannot take our travels for granted anymore, but I can step back in time with these series of (holiday) photo's.

Two days in this magnificent area are way to short!

A tranquil day along the Tusket River in Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia.

Desert hiking, Death Valley National Park. Ubehebe Volcanic Crater view point.

A bit of a tour inland to the Douglas-Apsley National Park in NE Tasmania, and the waterhole.

Apologies for not getting around to everyone's feeds as much as I would like, I'm operating with one arm in a cast at the moment. Sadly, I can't even hold a camera & press the shutter button. Lucky I am still working my around Tassie with photos. I picked up this new hybrid bike you see .....

Pro tip from a 65-year-old with a shiny new hybrid bike:

When you take it for a maiden voyage on a mountain bush fire trail, don’t overestimate your superhero skills — or the bike’s mountain goat abilities. Those innocent-looking dirt tracks can turn into steep, rough, rock-strewn rollercoasters before you know it. Especially at speed. And you have to go fast hey, that's what downhills are for ;)

What did I learn?

Gravity always wins, wrists are breakable, and the emergency department has uncomfortable chairs after 7 hours waiting for a cast and head trauma checks.

As for my poor new bike … it needs of a full rebuild. I’m pretty sure it is asking for a new less “enthusiastic” owner 😂

Have a great injury-free week out there and thanks for any comments, they are greatly appreciated !

Waterscape 61/100 in 2025

Nicole and I just got back from a ten day southwest road trip and were lucky enough to get a permit for the North Coyote Buttes Wilderness area. The BLM only allows 20 people per day in and it's a 6 mile round trip hike through the desert to get there but wow is it worth it! This has to be one of the most fascinating places I've ever seen!

This area has a total of 17,371 acres and is located in Grant, Tucker and Randolph counties. Elevation gain from 2500' to 4700'. Wind carved sandstone, stunted Red Spruce, grassy meadows and Splagnum Moss Bogs dominate the Sods. The area was logged from the 1880's through the 1920's. Massive wildfires and rainstorm eroded the area. The U.S. Army used the area for Artillery Training during W.W.II. Unexploded shells are are hazard. A beautiful area that a tribute to man's misuse of nature.

" Blood of the Living Rocks

What colors the sandstone red? The red color is caused by a union of iron and oxygen (an iron oxide) known as hematite (Fe 2 O ), a mineral named from the Greek word for blood. Iron is a powerful pigment present in many sediments and rocks, thus it commonly imparts color to the rocks.

Although red is the common pigment color, not all iron oxides are red; some are brown or yellow (minerals - limonite or goethite), and some are black (mineral - magnetite). Some iron minerals are metallic yellow (mineral - pyrite consisting of iron sulfide) or green (minerals - chlorite or clay consisting of iron silicate)."
