A just for fun shot., It somehow reminded me an old Roman or Greek mural

Two great mythical birds clashing over some great prize way back in antiquity

(Sad case of too much imagination maybe)

In reality it was two Kites who had no serious intentions of conflict., they were in fact just playing

No harm came to either of them

The prefect view of what's happening in the hood. It amazes me how a fair size bird can sit on the very top of a branch and not topple over.

Thank you for the favs, comments and support.

A green sandpiper, having just taken flight, displays the main characteristics that distinguish it from the common sandpiper - dark green legs and a white rump. Photographed near Tangalle, Sri Lanka. More at "Colin Pacitti Wildlife Photography & Fishing Travels" - www.colin-pacitti.com.

Phalacrocorax carbo / Vranac / Great Cormorant

Thanks to everyone for your visiting, favs & comments :).

It's always interesting to look at 'other' genre's of photography., and motorsport is an intriguing one

Slow shutter speed panning is regularly and spectacularly used to emphasis speed an action, but it's not a technique widely used in wildlife photography

Of course there are 'key' differences., racing cars are made of metal., so apart from the wheels going around the rest of the 'object' is in a 'fixed' state., of course an animal or bird is flesh and blood meaning it's 'parts' are in a constant state of 'flux'., esp. a flying bird

However the one part that is in a 'fixed' state is the birds head., and by making that the point of focus it's possible to snap a (very) slow shutter and panned fast moving bird

Some counter intuitive and crazy settings are required., but for me it's opened up a 'Pandora's box' of possibilities

This flying Cormorant is an early attempt., and it's very much the beginning of a long learning curve., but if by using this technique I can portray the movement., speed and action in a 'still frame' of our beloved feathered friends., then it'll be well worth required the perseverance

A summer butterfly of unimproved grassland, this Marbled White (Melanargia galathea) was photographed in Bloxworth, Dorset over the weekend.

Scientific name - Dinopium benghalense

Taken in my garden, West Bengal, India.

They nest in many remote areas, where it is less affected than the other bluebirds by competition for nest sites with Starlings and other invaders.

Chicks (egg) in their nest.

The small tortoiseshell is a colourful Eurasian butterfly in the family Nymphalidae. Adults feed on nectar and may hibernate over winter.

good to go

Though it looks like this osprey is coming in for a landing, it's a young bird just figuring out how to use his/her wings. There was no need to travel far into the back woods to find this nest as it is on top of a light pole in the middle of a Trader Joe's parking lot! It's sibling had already figure out the secrets of flight and made its way to a nearby light pole.

One from my archives of a Great Grey Owl ...note the nictating ( second eyelid) , an instinctive reaction when there is a possibility of eye injury as when landing on a perch...

Such majestic birds, we were very fortunate to encounter this African Harrier-Hawk close to the road within the Kruger National Park on safari with Wild Wings Safaris. Awesome.

well, i have such poor equipment to photograph birds, that i was quite happy with these photos. Autofocus is sooo slow in my camera i have to do all manual focus, so i was concentrating like hell to be able to even catch these moments the way i could.

i will invest in something more serious, but didn't decided yet what i will go with.. but i can't wait to have the before...after photos :)

In celebration of the little bit of rain we've had this week, this is a shot from the last evening rain. Parking lot outside Buffalo Wild Wings. The blue is actually Aspen Dental, so you can go get the wings cleaned out of your teeth.

We have become rather addicted to owls recently., but it's easy to see why

Yes of course they are birds., but I always think of them as being in another category... owl category

I looked it up and amazingly there are 255 species of owls worldwide., so if you started at a young enough age it may just be possible to get to see them all!

And ever wondered why you never hear one coming? Well owls are able to fly virtually silently because of a fringe on the leading edge of their primary feathers that helps muffle sound

Very useful if you're hunting for a mouse in the grass!

This Bald Eagle looks like he means business and by the bloodstains on his head feathers, I think he is serious about it.

The Gannet.,,

You know the bird

Large and white with yellowish heads., black-tipped wings.,and a long beak

But they don't look like that when they're young!

All brown and spotty., this is probably the youngest Gannet I've ever photographed

In fact when it flew past., we weren't entirely sure what it was

The adults could be seen far out at sea fishing., but this youngster was flying close to the land with some Gulls

His spectacular plumage yet to come., never the less still a very attractive bird

Happy 70 months to Mindy & I! After work, decided to eat at Buffalo Wild Wings since their wings are half off. Gotta love that mango habanero. Pretty crazy, but in about two months, it's going to be six years for us which is really crazy.
