Part of what is known as “Wigan Pier” The former Wigan Terminus Warehouses were built in the 18th century; after falling into disrepair they were refurbished in the 1980s using the original bricks. They stored grains, sugar, spices and dried fruits. Boats could moor inside the building and off-load directly into the warehouse. Most of the “bargees” or canal boat workers were born and lived on the canal or the “cut” as it was called. The horse drawn barges carried everything from coal and cotton to stone and salt. Often the barges would be joined together, and a horse could pull 25 tons at about 4 miles an hour. Stables, where the horses could rest were strategically positioned along the canal; if a horse fell into the canal it was guided to a “pull out” – a cobbled ramp, every couple of miles along the canal.
