Still life, 4x5

I found this growing in or close to a garden wall which was covered in Ivy and other wall climbing plants. It was pretty sheltered from sunlight, but not exposed to the elements either.

Bonnie at Cathedral Falls, surrounded by Thuja and Corydalis

A common "weed" with special importance in the American South. A most interesting plant!

All parts are toxic, but the young plant is eaten in traditional and preindustrial diets, after careful kitchen processing (very young stalks, boiled in at least three changes of water). Birds love them, thus spreading the plant, and leaving stains on your car and porch.

I post this because the vigorous root is so interesting. This one is at least several years old. It was growing in deep natural mulch under a Canadian Hemlock and thus came up entire when I pulled.

Here is a relatively isolated cluster of Heliconia rostrata. It made it very easy to photograph the entire plant.

Here is a whole plant of native Coyote Mint aka White-leaf Monardella (Monardella hypoleuca) in the Lamiaceae plant family - with lots of flowers and even a few butterflies. I've been posting so many photos of butterflies on these flowers lately, that I figured it was time to show the plant. It's a perennial that favors disturbed areas but not exclusively so. Several of its cousins in the same genus (like this one) have a wonderful peppermint smell, but this one smells musty and not quite pleasant. These plants are growing in the place I call "FAA Peak" - the high point between Painted Cave and Arroyo Burro that hosts a FAA radio transmitter. There's another colony in our canyon at home that always seems to flower later. That gives me two chances to photograph the butterflies and other insects that are attracted to the flowers. Benign neglect bloomed this Liparis condylobulbon

I am not really very sure about the identification of this plant. It could be L. parviflora or L viridiflora, as well. All three are endemic to the Philippines and surrounding Southeast Asian countries.

Usually from the cooler highlands. I had a hard time making it bloom. This pot is in my office, which has central air conditioning. Over a two-year period it had had only two applications of 20-20-20, and lately because I am so busy, went for days or even a week between waterings.

As you can see, the foliage looks horrible but hey, I got blooms.

Acer saccharum 'Sweet Shadow' (Cultivar of Sugar Maple)

Here is a whole shrub of native Douglas' Groundsel (Senecio flaccidus var. douglasii aka S. douglasii) in the Asteraceae plant family. I guess it counts as a sub-shrub with slightly woody stems. Its daisy-like flowers are a delight for the eyes and the butterflies at this time of year. It mostly grows high in the mountains, but there is one plant near Knapp's Castle on the pass.
