Saw this strange rainbow shaped cloud in Carnlough today. Bright sunshine as I came down off the glen into a heavy sea mist. Sun was still cutting through it enough to throw shadows and the mistbow followed me up the coast, sun to left bow to right, just like a rainbow would. How odd!

A beautiful "Moonbow" appeared as I was watching the eclipse. Moonlight refracted through a thin cloud revealing multiple rings of color. As a bonus, a plane is flying under it all!

"Fogbow and Reflection" by Patti Deters. This is only the second fogbow I've ever seen and it was spotted in the early morning near the town of Levering, Michigan just a few miles south of Mackinaw City at GPS 45°38'26.1312N, 84°46'52.4208W. Also called white rainbow, ghost rainbow, or cloud bow, fogbows are relatively rare and often go unnoticed, or at least unreported. They are formed much the same way as rainbows but with much smaller water droplets. Fog bows tend to be white while there the similar atmospheric optics phenomenon known as 'cloud bows' tend to have a bit of color, though not as vibrant as a rainbow. The two fogbows that I've seen have been in misty early morning weather near a large body of water, such as this location which is surrounded by Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, and Lake Superior. The water reflection here has been added in post. If you like outdoor nature photography, please see more weather and landscape images at patti-deters.pixels.com/featured/fogbow-and-reflection-pa....
This one falls in the category of interesting rather than good photography. It is a phenomenon that I had never heard of before I saw it. Once seen though it makes sense. And now having seen it once I will be on the lookout for it whenever the right circumstances seem to be in place.
If you have opened this one up you will see see stars ( part of Orion) so it is clear it is taken at night. It was also taken very close to full moon when the full moon was still fairly low behind the camera. We worked out that it was raining over the sea in front of us - and the interaction between moonlight and the rain was forming the rainbow.
At times we could see the rainbow in colour and I snapped away for quite some time trying different things to try to get it better. Unfortunately when the rainbow was clearest there was more cloud and that obscured the stars, consequently those photos look like more like day ones.
Googling confirms that the night rainbow is formed the way we had worked out and reveals that most of the photos posted of this phenomemon on the internet are taken in US national parks and involve waterfalls. This type of rainbow is sometimes called a white rainbow or lunar rainbow for this is how it often appears to the naked eye. The colours are more pronounced in a long exposure photo.

One of Orkney's most imposing monoliths, the Watchstone stands a short distance to the north-west of the Standing Stones of Stenness.
Towering over the Brig o' Brodgar, the solitary stone giant stands at the point the Stenness and Harray lochs meet.
Just over 5.6 metres high (around 19 feet), we know the Watchstone was once one of a pair of standing stones, outliers to the Stone of Stenness circle, that perhaps marked the approach to the to the Ness of Brodgar. Radiocarbon dates show that the site dates from at least 3100BC
I was just standing near it in the mist when I suddenly became aware of something 'solid' above me. Looking up I saw a fogbow forming overhead. I dashed to the car boot and grabbed a wide-angle lens. It only lasted a few minutes. No time to find a more interesting composition
A fog bow, sometimes called a white rainbow, is a similar phenomenon to a rainbow; however, as its name suggests, it appears as a bow in fog rather than rain. Because of the very small size of water droplets that cause fog—smaller than 0.05 millimeters—the fog bow has only very weak colors, with a red outer edge and bluish inner edge.
A moonbow (also known as a lunar rainbow, white rainbow, lunar bow or space rainbow) is a rainbow produced by light reflected off the surface of the moon rather than from direct sunlight. Moonbows are relatively faint, due to the smaller amount of light reflected from the surface of the moon. They are always in the opposite part of the sky from the moon.
It is difficult for the human eye to discern colors in a moonbow because the light is usually too faint to excite the cone color receptors in human eyes. As a result, they often appear to be white.[1] However, the colors in a moonbow do appear in long exposure photographs.bbb
A heavy winter fog obscured visibility across the outback rural landscape, then suddenly a fog bow appeared, arching across the dirt road lined with flowering wattle - and in the distance barely visible the wind turbines quietly turn generating clean revewable energy.
This phenomenon was a first for me. The moon was nearly full and there must have been ice crystals at that atmosphere. It was about 5:00 am.
The presence of high "cirrus cloud which contains the ice crystals required for haloes to form often signifies an approaching frontal system; however in many cases the front will be inactive or simply change course from the area - producing no rain.
Well one of those nights were things went wrongly right...
Had bad cough, fever, sore throat...And my dear friend Prashant called up for a night out. Couldn't say NO.... .and glad I did go. This is one of the best trail shots that I got in the night.
Whats more I got a Moonbow too!

Lucky me!!!! Overall it was a fun filled night despite my sore throat & choked nose :-)
Some memorable quotes from the night:
१) विक्या, रात्र आपलीच आहे.... (Vikya, Night belongs to us....)
2) Lets make this frame more interesting.....
३) तिकडून फोटू काढा, लई भयानक फोटू निघतील बघा....
And yes.. Prashant makes awesome tea!

CDR Cover for KIT's "Revocation."
If you wanna hear "Revocation" and don't happen to be close to anywhere KIT is playing, there's a download link below that's valid until March 24th.
Their Europe tour starts this Sunday (TOUR DATES BELOW), and I very much recommend that you see them if you get a chance. Here's the press release that George Chen sent me today:
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
KIT Remix Album Free Download, Europe Tour Dates
California rock band KIT has had an interesting year. The album Invocation on Upset! The Rhythm got some great reviews, and their drummer Vice Cooler directed two videos that circulated on The Fader and Pitchfork.

"AMBROSIA" video www.thefader.com/2011/01/14/video-premiere-kit-ambrosia/
The latest entry in the KIT saga is a current tour of UK, Germany, and The Netherlands playing with bands like The Babies, Trash Kit, Cowtown, and Tearist. To commemorate this trip the band asked their friends to create remixes of the song "Rain." Not only did artists like Xiu Xiu, White Rainbow, Nero's Day At Disneyland, and Stereo Total take on the challenge, Holly Herndon even got a friend to remix the "Rain" music video to accompany her "Rain" remix!

"I first got lured into KIT's sonic crazy-cage to finally see my friend and colleague George Chen play guitar. What does he do but stab the crowd with non-stop single-string prickle-dissonance while the rest of the band seemed to marvel at the sheer insanity of their noise and the singer couldn't stop laughing. In other words, FUN.
'Invocation' finds the songs much more organized and atmospheric, like an overcast walk in the park in England as fall leaves swirl in the wind. For some reason it reminds me of the obscure slashy lo-fi post-punk bands who bubbled under early '80s Britain like the Blood Robots, Prag Vec, Scars maybe?" - Jello Biafra

This fogbow was visible most of the day. I had a time-lapse cam set up in hopes of clearer skies and halos... oh well! Still, awesome sites eh! SOB is our "shop and operations barn" Summit Station, Greenland... top of the ice sheet. Sep 16 11 8502

trip together with martino_
Exactly one year after our previous photo-geek-trip together to the forest hospital we decided to go back, together, to the same explore location to shoot whatever we missed last time. Last year a security van approached us with high speed and as we grabbed our gear to run into the forest it stopped where we ran up the stairs.
We started our trip with an early drive to the abandoned house maison m. where we amazed us of all the personal things that were still there, touched and moved by others, we left all of it as it was and started shooting photos.
The original plan was to leave the night before, so with our new schedule we suddenly had the entire day to get to our final destination and agreed to head out to fort steendorp, 'cause we should get some great infrared results during daytime if only the sun keeps shining.
The fort itself is open for a tour with a guide once a week and left in peace for bats to breed, maybe we'll enter it next year ;-)
Back on track and with our final location nearby we start checking the area for a campsite, knowing the one from last time was perfect for wild-camping.
Close to an other entrance of our location we park the car to do a quick check and just to be sure, we grab our gear and head into the forest. Again, here we are, in front of the concrete wall, search for the gap, climb through and walk the trail towards the locked gate... We manage to get inside and silently walk to the small building we overlooked one year ago, our main goal, the morgue and see the new chain-lock wrapped through the door and a steel bar diagonal in front of it. A small broken window gives away the previous attempts of explorers to take photos here, but wait, the steel bar isn't mounted and without hesitation we quickly climb through the window one at the time and pass each others gear through... Our plan was to do it early next morning, but we suddenly realize were in... the morgue.
Outside again on our way back i spot the open door of the watertower and head inside to check it out. As we walk back to the exit were we came in, we walk the stairs again and this time we don't have to run. We walk to the car, pick the same camping spot as last year and after a good night's rest we pack our stuff and hit the road back home again. Only one stop left at an abandoned office building with the 'double helix' stairs.
Like a rainbow but no color.
A pretty rare event to see, I've only seen a couple.
This one in Corral Canyon, Malibu, Ca.
I'd never before heard of a moon rainbow - a moonbow (also lunar rainbow, lunar bow, or white rainbow). I have now, but I still have never seen one. Turns out this isn't a moonbow - a moonbow is the same shape as a rainbow & always appears on the opposite side of the sky from the moon. Scratch that.
Then I discovered a phenomenon called a 22° halo, which - among other things - forms a colored halo 22° around the sun or moon. Bingo! Except upon performing a google image search for moon halo, nothing of this sort comes up. Apparently a moon halo is much larger than seen here & almost completely white.
Now I'm slightly leaning toward either a moon ring (which by all accounts seems to be exactly the same thing as a 22° moon halo) or some other phenomenon that never before has been witnessed, despite the thousands of years humans have been gazing upwards. I'm thinking the latter is probably it.
I'm gonna called it The 22° Davebow Moon Halo. I like the way it rolls off my tongue. Try it. It's fun to say. I promise.
A quick note on post-processing: while I did do a little to cut down the glare & help bring out the colors a bit, the final product not only is quite close to the original photo, it actually is closer to how it looked the night I took this, as the camera sadly wasn't able to capture it perfectly. It really was quite amazing to see.
UPDATE:
Thanks to one of my brilliant friends I now know this particular optical phenomenon is called a lunar corona. Beautiful!
so around noon one day we all look up and notice a perfect rainbow circling the sun. never seen anything like it before. hole in the ozone? the rapture a week too late? who knows.

I've seen a few Moonbows before but never this big. This one must have miles and miles wide! It was quite the site.
Moonbows are basically the same as Rainbows except they are created by light reflecting off the surface of the moon, rather than from direct sunlight. The colors of the moonbow are a little harder to make out due to moonlight being more faint compared to sunlight. But the long exposure time really helps in bringing the colors out.
Strong northern winds carried very small water droplets from a storm about 40km away (not visible in the image). The colours of the rainbow are only visible in the extremes.
