Norway are home to beautiful scenery, but it’s also home to a dangerous stretch of coastline. The Stadhavet Sea is the most exposed and dangerous area along the coast of Norway. The people who lives out here, have always been linked to the sea, as sailors, as fishermen and as whalers. This area experiences between 45 to 106 stormy days per year. The beautiful coastal landscape is shaped by the waves, through an eternity of time.. Thanks for your visit and comments, my Flickr friends! Stay safe and healthy..

An old whaler off Kingfisher Bay, Fraser Island.

These bronze whaler sharks inhabit subtropical waters, and they feed on smaller sharks, rays, and bony fish. Unfortunately, bronze sharks are prime targets for both commercial and sports fishermen.

Built in 1967 and rebuilt in 1993, the Mystic Whaler carries passengers and trainees on a variety of cruises, ranging from 3 hours to 5 days. In April, May, and early June, the schooner joins Clearwater on the Hudson River, for environmental education programs. Sailing from New London, CT throughout the summer months, the Mystic Whaler offers great sailing opportunities for both novice and experienced passengers. Three-hour Lobster Dinner Cruises are popular as are the 5-hour Day sails, or try an overnight of 2, 3 or 5 days. In September and October, the Mystic Whaler travels to Baltimore Maryland for three weeks of 3-day overnight sails and to participate in the Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race.

Have a great weekend!

:-)

This is a portrait of my son, I have doing photos of him since seconds after he was born. When he was about four years old one of his favorite movies was “Moby Dick” with Gregory Peck. He had aspirations of being a whaler when he grew up, such are the dreams of a child. I wanted to give the antique look of a whaler of the 1800’s resulting in this image.

The main building, half collapsed, was the whalers' barracks/dormitory in the early 20th-century (known as Biscoe House when used by the British Antarctic Survey). To the left is Magistrate's Residence, used as a store house by the BAS in the 1960s.

Of course, what drew me to this scene, was the dry river bed and the beautiful lines made by the light snowfall, the driving snow, snow on the distant hills and the wonderfully overcast, snowy conditions. A fantastically bleak scene.

This is the last image in my Antarctic series. I thank you all so much for your interest, you comments and support. When I booked the trip (a year before I took it) I thought of it as a 'trip of a lifetime'. Indeed it was. Antarctica is a truly amazing place and this was an incredible trip. I loved every moment of it.

I made a short film of what I saw in Antarctica. If you'd like to see it, head over to YouTube or you can watch it here on Flickr.

I wrote three blog posts about this amazing trip to Antarctica. If you'd like read about the trip and see some more documentary/BTS images, you'll find the blog posts here:

This picture was made during an encounter of Flickr Florianópolis Group, almost three weeks ago... I've had almost no time for photography.

The long, empty black sand beach leads to the aircraft hanger of the old British Antarctic Survey base on Deception Island. The base was first evacuated in 1967 during an eruption of the volcano that forms the island and was eventually abandoned after another eruption in 1969. While occupying the site, the members of the BAS constructed some new buildings like this one, but mainly took over the already-existing buildings that had been left from the old 1908 whaling station.

Deception Island is so named because from the sea it looks like a normal island, but once you cross through the gap called Neptune’s Bellows, you can see that is actually the caldera (crater) of a volcano. Deception island is an active volcano (steam can be seen rising from the water from the heat) and it erupted most recently in 1970.

Note: this is not a black and white image. The landscape is truly this monochrome, with a few small exceptions I'll show in my next image.

Portland in South West Victoria. Coast, lighthouse at Whalers Bluff.

In 1837, the Fremantle Whaling Company, which had been established in 1836 and used a little jetty on Bathers Beach, requested that a tunnel be cut from Bathers Beach through Arthur's Head and under the Round House to connect with High Street. In return, the company would construct a breakwater to protect ships of up to 150 tons. The Whaling Company met the cost of the tunnel, and Reveley directed the works.

A few early fall leaves brighten up Whaler Creek near the Slate Mountain Mine in Eldorado County, Ca. I shot this a few weeks ago, and did not post it because I was unhappy with the blown out look of a couple of the leaves. It popped up in Lightroom when I was getting ready to process a couple of Death Valley photos recently. I thought "Well, that looks pretty good and I know I'll never actually go back to fix it", so here you go.

Semi-circular Whalers Bay on Deception Island, Antarctica, is part of the huge caldera formed when a volcano blew off its top 10,000 years ago.

We stayed at the Whaler's Inn, a lovely hotel in Mystic, Connecticut. If you stuck you head far enough out of the window, you could see the Mystic river.

Hoping to catch the BIG ONE before the storm hits. Whalers Island, incorporated into the breakwater, & Smith Island are seen across the bay.

Ben Boyd National Park- Twofold Bay - NSW South Coast.

Boyds Tower, originally designed as a lighthouse by Benjamin Boyd, was built in 1847.

"From this lookout, whalers would wait and keenly watch for the telltale spout as a whale surfaced to breathe. The hunt would often be underway before a whale was seen by human eyes. Killer Whales (Orcas) would harass the whale towards the shallower waters of Twofold Bay. The Killers would then alert the human whalers to the presence of the whales with tail flops and leaps that could be seen and heard over long distances.

In this rare example of wild animals co-operating with humans for mutual benefit, the killers were rewarded with a feast of the whale’s tongue before the whalers towed the animal to shore. This was known as the “Law of the Tongue”."

Spectacular cliffs, caves, rock formations and huge southern ocean swells make up the coastline of Whalers Way.

Preston Cemetery, North Shields. Much of the text has eroded away but you can make out "Jonathan Marn(?) of North Shields formerly harponeer, Greenland Fishery, aged 61 years died Feb 24th" on it. Unfortunately the rest of the date has eroded away. I never knew Tyneside had had a whaling industry until I spotted this gravestone. There's a good history of Tyneside whaling here
