Best seen on a black background. Off Vancouver Island, near a bay in Ucluelet, a gray whale. The photograph was taken in April and likely the whale was migrating up north for the summer. Gray whales spend the winter in the Sea of Cortez where they give birth to their young. Early in the spring, they swim back down around the tip of Baja California and come up the west coast of our continent, going as far as Alaska.

This one was close enough to see the barnacles on its head.

Personally, I think the guy's hooked in with the whales. By which I mean, I think he's in deep. I don't know what he pays them -- krill, I guess, is what they like. Or maybe candy. Whale candy (which is probably just krill with nougat in the center). Anyway. This guy knows where the whales are. He takes us out on the boat, and within about, ohhh, two minutes, we're hanging out with a pair of whales.

And after that, it was whale after whale. I think I saw Dan McSweeney riding one. Doing flips and s**t. Getting everybody all wet.
