In 1928 the Loew's State Theatre opened on Weybosset Street in downtown Providence as an opulently elegant movie house. Over the years its offerings, and its name, changed with the times, going from movies, to concerts of classical music and for a long time a well-known rock-n-roll venue. Saved from the wrecking ball around 1978 and extensively renovated since, the Providence Performing Arts Center today hosts large Broadway productions as well as orchestra performances in its once again majestically opulent surroundings. The theater's Richmond Street entrance still announces the interior grandeur inside. Providence, Rhode Island, USA.

Providencia, Rhode Island, Estados Unidos.

The Providence National Bank Facade was included on the 2009-2011 Most Endangered Properties lists as part of a listing of the Downtown National Register District. When listed, it was being compromised by a number of factors: public policy insensitive to preservation; poor quality new design; unregulated demolitions; and the current declining real estate market following the previous boom. The Teste Block and the Providence National Bank façade exemplified these threats because both could be legally demolished without review under the Downcity Review Commission guidelines, which allowed demolition of buildings that remain unoccupied for five years.

In 2005, Blue Chip Properties and Granoff Associates demolished the Providence National Bank Building at 90 Westminster Street. They saved the 1940s-era 50 Weybosset Street façade, pledging to integrate it into a new structure. In October, 2007, the new project officially stalled due to a softening real estate market. Not only was the promise of economically stimulating new development broken, but the historic Providence National Bank and First Federal Bank buildings were gone. All that remained of them in 2009 was a single façade, propped up by rusting steel beams. Losing the remaining façade would further erode the lower Weybosset streetscape.

In November, 2009, the owner of the Providence National Bank Building site requested that the Downcity Design Review Committee (DRC) consider his proposal to demolish the façade, claiming that the façade was too expensive to maintain. The owner hoped to construct a temporary parking lot on the site, asserting that his proposed parking lot (about 50 spaces) would serve as an asset to the area. Meanwhile, local business owners had complained that the scaffolding has been bad for business, since it obstructs pedestrian traffic. The DRC postponed a vote on the demolition request and ordered the owner to either create a plan to save the façade or present a compelling case for demolition. Thanks to advocacy by PPS and intervention by Mayor Angel Tavares, the owner was compelled to move the steel supports to the parking lot side of the facade, where it remains as of February, 2019. The facade continues to serve as a canvas for art and backdrop for performances. (Providence Preservation Society.)

The U.S. Customshouse is a historic custom house at 24 Weybosset Street in Providence, Rhode Island at the northeast corner at Weybosset and Custom House streets. The customhouse was built between 1855 and 1857 to a design by Ammi B. Young and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.

The building was completed in 1857 at a total cost of construction of $209,723.32. It was constructed of granite from quarries in Quincy, Massachusetts. It is a three-story building, topped by a hip roof and metal dome, with quoined corners and cornices between the levels. It is three bays wide and seven deep, with the central three bays on each side projecting slightly, with further quoining to emphasize the projection.

After completion it housed the city's main post office, Federal District Court, District Attorney, Internal Revenue Service, Collector of Customs, and Steamboat Inspector. The building housed these federal offices until November 1909, when a new and larger Federal Building was erected on Exchange Place (now Kennedy Plaza) nearby. Thereafter, the structure remained vacant until 1921 when the U.S. Customs office and other federal agencies needing additional space returned. The Federal Government occupied the building for the next seventy years. After the Federal Government vacated the structure in 1989, it was considered by a variety of businesses for occupation, including a restaurant, a facility for homeless persons, and offices. In 1992, the building was purchased by the State of Rhode Island and converted to office space for the State Courts System. After extensive renovation at a cost of $550.000, the building was opened by the state of Rhode Island as the John E. Fogarty Judicial Complex.

The Customshouse is the centerpiece of the Customhouse Historic District, which includes eight commercial buildings historically associated with the growth of the city as a business center in the mid-to-late 19th century. That historic district is a portion of the larger Downtown Providence Historic District, listed in 1984. (Wikipedia.)

Photographic collage of original street paintings by Umberto Crenca, arranged here as they appear in the the window bays of the Providence National Bank Facade, 50 Weybosset Street. I estimate each painting to be roughly 8 feet wide by 12 feet tall. Not my usual fare, but I found them quite intriguing. Assembled using the Print tab and Triptych template in Lightroom Classic CC, which was super easy to use after a little experimentation.

The Providence Athenæum as we know it was founded and incorporated in 1836 after a previous Providence Athenæum (est. 1831) and the Providence Library Company (est. 1753) could not agree on terms for a merger. Both organizations dissolved and formed a new library, which included the collections of both earlier institutions.

This new organization, known initially as simply The Athenæum, would later change its name to the Providence Athenæum in 1850. One hundred ninety-five men, two women, and four business firms contributed to the initial raising of funds. Originally housed in the Arcade downtown on Weybosset Street, the Athenæum opened the doors of its completed Benefit Street home on July 11, 1838, accompanied by the Franklin Society, a scientific and philosophic club, which occupied what is now the Reading Room. The Franklin Society moved out in 1848, and the Athenæum built a staircase connecting the main floor to our now downstairs Reading Room.

The Athenæum continued to attract members and obtain materials throughout the nineteenth century. Some notable acquisitions were the Description de l’Egypte, an enormous 23-volume set depicting Napoleon’s expedition to Egypt in the late eighteenth century, and The Hours, an ivory miniature painted by Newport-born Edward Greene Malbone in 1801 (both of which can be seen in the Art and Special Collection sections of our site). Some famous frequenters of the library included author Charlotte Perkins Gilman, who on at least one occasion snacked on crackers as she “read Egypt at the Ath,” and future Secretary of State John Hay, who described Providence as “shrined in my memory as a far-off, mystical Eden, where the women were lovely and spirited and the men were jolly and brave; where I used to haunt the rooms of the Athenæum, made holy by the presence of the royal dead…”

In 1872, the Athenæum hired its first female employee, Mary Angell, as assistant librarian. As part of her duties, she began working on the card catalog which still sits on the library’s main floor. Her handwritten cards from the nineteenth century can still be found inside (be sure to take a look!). Mary’s work was continued by Grace Leonard, a cataloger hired in 1895 to use the Dewey decimal system to reclassify and catalog the library’s 56,000 volumes over the course of 13 years. Grace later became the library’s first female head librarian and worked at the Athenæum for a total of 46 years.

The Athenæum has physically expanded twice, once in 1914 with an addition designed by local architect Norman Morrison Isham and once in 1979 with an addition designed by award-winning architect Warren Platner. Both expansions were a result of a need for increased storage for the collection and to create space for the library’s ever-popular children’s services. The Athenæum has always welcomed our community’s youngest members, and continues to do so into the twenty-first century.

For more information on the Athenæum’s history, please see Inquire Within, A Social History of the Providence Athenæum from 1753, available for browsing, check out, or purchase at the library. The above short history is indebted to author Jane Lancaster’s work.

The Stonewall riots were a series of spontaneous, violent demonstrations by members of the gay (LGBT) community against a police raid that took place in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn (nightclub / bar / disco), located on Christopher Street in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. They are widely considered to constitute the single most important event leading to the gay liberation movement and the modern fight for LGBT rights in the United States.

Many pride events happen in the month of June to commemorate this date.

Providence city, State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations state, USA The United States of America country, North America continent

June 18th 2016

"Providence is the capital and most populous city of the U.S. state of Rhode Island, also the most populous city of Providence County. One of the oldest cities in New England, it was founded in 1636 by Roger Williams, a Reformed Baptist theologian and religious exile from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He named the area in honor of "God's merciful Providence" which he believed was responsible for revealing such a haven for him and his followers. The city is situated at the mouth of the Providence River at the head of Narragansett Bay.

Providence was one of the first cities in the country to industrialize and became noted for its textile manufacturing and subsequent machine tool, jewelry, and silverware industries. Today, the city of Providence is home to eight hospitals and eight institutions of higher learning which have shifted the city's economy into service industries, though it still retains some manufacturing activity.

As of the 2020 U.S. census, Providence has a population of 190,934, making it the third-most-populous city in New England after Boston and Worcester, Massachusetts." - info from Wikipedia.

The fall of 2022 I did my 3rd major cycling tour. I began my adventure in Montreal, Canada and finished in Savannah, GA. This tour took me through the oldest parts of Quebec and the 13 original US states. During this adventure I cycled 7,126 km over the course of 2.5 months and took more than 68,000 photos. As with my previous tours, a major focus was to photograph historic architecture.

"The Westminster Arcade (also known as the Providence Arcade, Arcade Providence, or The Arcade) is a historic shopping center at 130 Westminster Street and 65 Weybosset Street in downtown Providence, Rhode Island built in 1828. It is notable as the first enclosed shopping mall in the United States and has been lauded as a fine example of commercial Greek Revival architecture. It served as a shopping center for many years before falling into decline in the late 20th century. It has since been closed for renovation and rehabilitation several times, and most recently reopened its doors in October 2013 as a residential and commercial mixed-use building. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1976.

Providence is the capital and most populous city of the U.S. state of Rhode Island, also the most populous city of Providence County.
