[To get an idea of the wind and high seas, enlarge and survey the horizon. At one point you can actually see the mast of a ship.]
The West Coast of Tasmania is the least populated in an island state with a total population of just 500,000. It's quite possible to go miles without seeing a soul. This coast is rugged. Rocky shores shaped by eons of high seas and the winds of the Roaring 40s. The nearest landfall to the west is Argentina some 16,000 kms away.
The westerly winds are whipped up over the great expanse of the Southern Ocean, cold and usually carrying plenty of rain. There is a great yacht race from Melbourne to Hobart via the west coast, "The Westcoaster", that passes this spot. The Sydney to Hobart captures most of the press attention, but adventure sailors prefer this hazardous race. When the winds blow down the east coast they usually carry the supermaxi yachts to Hobart under spinnaker in little over 32 hours. It's a cruise most years.
But "The Westcoaster" is usually into the full brunt of the Roaring 40s that originated in Antarctica. No straight line cruising under spinnaker here. This classic footage from the race in 1977 will give you some idea:

R711 & S313 come storming towards the photoline on 2019's Warrnambool Westcoaster.
This marked the first photostop involving a detrain & setback on the mainline since at least 2004.
The crew on the footplate put on quite the show for the photographers, with an impressive white plume, being quite a spectacular sight for everyone watching (except for Steamrail's fitters).

I just received another group of these rest area photos. I may try to edit this one more but the patch of yellow sky is causing problems. A nice photo, none the less. And the white Pontiac returns.

As R711 simmers away in platform 4, the first driver of the day adorns the smokebox with a floral decoration.
Back at Newport, he had written the important chalk message, ready for all eyes and cameras to come onto the locomotive on the mainline.
Here, Bottlebrush is being tied onto both of the Deflectors shortly before he attaches a daffodil to the smokebox wheel.
A testiment to his work, the flowers managed to hold on for the ride at 50MPH.

Can you believe the planes really do fly that low? Apparently it's one of the most difficult airports to fly into (for pilots). You have to be a fairly experienced, skilled pilot to be allowed to fly into San Diego.

A Westcoaster Mail Master for sale at $5,000. A type previously unknown to me, I had to find out more. Wikipedia was my source, which details how as many as 17,000 of these mail scooters were once used by the US Postal Service. From the late 1960s, the type was replaced by more robust vehicles, notably specially adapted Jeeps.
