SN/NC: Corvus Brachyrhynchos, Corvidae Family
The American crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos) is a large passerine bird species of the family Corvidae. It is a common bird found throughout much of North America. American crows are the New World counterpart to the carrion crow and the hooded crow. Although the American crow and the hooded crow are very similar in size, structure and behavior, their calls and visual appearance are different. The American crow, nevertheless, occupies the same ecological niche that the hooded crow and carrion crow do in Eurasia.
Males tend to be larger than females. The most usual call is CaaW!-CaaW!-CaaW!. Plumage is all black, with iridescent feathers. It looks much like other all-black corvids. They are very intelligent, and adaptable to human environments. They have the same brain-weight-to-body ratio as humans. They are considered an agricultural pest, and are subject to hunting and management. The actual effect of crows on agriculture though, has been poorly studied. There is some suggestion that they may be a benefit to farmers, by eating insect pests and chasing off livestock predators like hawks.
The American crow was described by German ornithologist Christian Ludwig Brehm in 1822. Its scientific name means literally 'short-billed crow', from Ancient Greek βραχυ- brachy- ('short-') and ρυνχος rhynchos ('billed'). The most usual call is a loud, short, and rapid caaw-caaw-caaw. Usually, the birds thrust their heads up and down as they utter this call. American crows can also produce a wide variety of sounds and sometimes mimic noises made by other animals, including other birds such as barred owls.
They are able to steal food from other species, often in creative ways. One example shows a group of crows stealing a fish from a Northern river otter: one bird pecked the otter's tail to distract it while other birds swooped in and stole the fish. They are able to use and modify tools.
Crows are a motif in human culture, often associated with death, thieves, graveyards, bad luck, and other negative connotations.

This female coyote (Canis latrans) decided to walk right past me. So accustomed to humans, her pace was rather nonchalant, and she hardly glanced my way. I had plenty of opportunity to snap off a number of frames. At her closest point, she nearly filled the viewfinder. I had been hoping for a moment like this for over a year, a chance to get a decent close shot of the Pacific Spirit coyotes. And here it happened, on a day when coyotes were furthest from my mind. This female paused by the road as a few cars raced past, then trotted into the brush after her roadkill-collecting companion. I have a few more frames that I will post tomorrow.

Last Sunday afternoon we found this little guy looking lost and scared on Wesbrook Mall at UBC. We took him home for a couple of hours, which he seemed to appreciate greatly, and then tried to figure out what to do with him. He had no collar or tags, was very well looked after and very friendly.
Being that we had no cat food or facilities, as such, and assuming that cats were reasonably good at finding their way home, we let him outside again, and then went out ourselves. Coming home at 10pm, we didn't see him anywhere and so assumed that he had found his way home.
About 12:30 at night, with the rain coming down outside, I heard a meowing at the front door. I went downstairs to check and our little fuzzy buddy was at the front door, wanting to come in again. I let him in, toweled him off and went back to sleep.
The next morning (after a brief photoshoot :) I took him over to the SPCA, who signed him in and put his picture on their website. A couple of days later his owner found him and picked him up, so the story has a happy ending :)
I've never seen a half-Siamese cat before, and he has the most beautiful blue cat eyes I'd ever seen. I'm glad he's home safe and sound, but we would have been more than happy to give him a new home if he needed one... oh well, so it goes...
I've been sick for the past few days and just today I've regained enough energy to take pictures. At least I've got spring break now. :)
