Weird Beard Five O’clock Shadow is a 7% abv American IPA. It poured a deep, slightly hazy amber color with a beige head. It smelled faintly of caramel but very little of hops, which I found a bit unsettling (according to the bartender this IPA was 3 months old, so it should still have smelled of hops). Mouthfeel was medium heavy with a soft carbonation. Flavor started out with a good malt character that was balanced nicely by the hop bitterness. As it warmed up I also got some fruit notes, but nothing like the piny or citrusy character of a US West Coast IPA. Still, the malt body of this beer was so elegant and balanced the bitterness so nicely that I actually enjoyed the beer, though I would not call it an American IPA.

Weird Beard Brew Company are two award-winning homebrewers, Bryan Spooner and Gregg Irwin, from Hanwell, a town in the London Borough of Ealing in west London. They wanted to take their passion for drinking and creating great hand-crafted beers out of the kitchen and so they launched Weird Beard in 2012. At first they borrowed time at other breweries to brew their beer, but in early 2013 they installed their own brewery in Boston Business Park in Hanwell, London.
