Well here is what I put together to put inside my second bag. I am already planning some modification - rearranging of the pans and making sure that they are dry before I take them out.
I was intending to use this page for my weekly spread of trivia and fill the bottom box with text...but not so sure now....
One of my goals for the Journal Class is to get back into the habit of doing ‘weekly pages’.... One of my constant challenges is to find ways to make interesting 'text pages' as I really want my journal to be a record of my life.
So here is this weeks. The concept behind this is to create a spread at the beginning of the week that I can use to dump various random trivial things on it during the week. I have found in the past that I really LOVE reading these when I come back to my journals months or years later – there is something special of being reminded of absolutely useless trivia that no one is interested in but yourself – maybe it is because it is so personal (in a trivial way not a private-no-one-must-see way) Does this make any sense?
What I like to do is to make the text not that easy to read so as to discourage people who look through my journal to read it because I am sure that no one really wants to know how many headaches I have in the week!?!
One of my other goals was to slow down without taking much more time. I don’t think that I achieved this this time... Look at how different those two shoes are – the real profile is in between the two. Although I would have liked for them to be more similar I am not going to lose any sleep over it. Maybe tomorrow I will remember that I want to spend 1 minute extra at the start of a sketch....

last week I did some reading of old journals from 2 years ago - amazing to see the change in my sketching - but once again it is the random trivia in my life that i enjoy re-reading. So I am starting to do my 'weekly' pages of random stuff. Here is this weeks- WIP. I have a handbag desktop calendar(a different bag each day) and often think I would like to sketch one... this week I did a few. Obviously I will fill up with text by the end of the week.
I am really enjoying getting back to do a weekly spread – on Monday, I think of something that is unique to the week and then record random and mainly extremely trivial things that happen each day - it is fun to re-read at a later date the things that I thought to record at the time....sometimes the most trivial things trigger the most enjoyable memories!
I nearly always have fun when I open a new page of my journal... But sometimes I REALLY HAVE FUN! This page is one of those occasions – can you tell? (working fast with not much attention to detail is one of the keys!)
This week I was looking through a few journals from this time last year and the pages that I enjoyed re-visiting the most were the ‘This Week’ spreads that I sometimes did... A bit of a collage backdrop for dumping random thoughts or trivial events during the week. So I am going to start the practice again – of course some of the text needs to be obscured though none of it is that personal as my journal always gets handed around my friends.
Anyway, this week the spread is very architectural. I am trying to decide where to go on my overseas trip this year – it was going to be a long 3 month adventure but now just looks like it will be a short one. I am longing to go back to Venice again. I had a wonderful week there in Jan 06 (before my sketching-on-location-days) and spent 3 months beforehand researching its architecture. I even prepared my own architectural guide! A bit rusty on some of the names but looking at a map brings back so many memories and a vivid picture of the spaces and buildings.
So here are some scribble sketches that I used to inspire my random ramblings this week.(I know the week is not over yet...got to work out where I am going to put my bits for tomorrow...)

It ws a nice idea to sketch the pattern of the lining...but I didn't quite realise how complicated it was... also I should have done the linework in pencil...but still it was fun! (I was tempted to tone down the background in photoshop so that bag stands out more...but you have what is in my journal!)
And one thing that I forgot to mention on my page ... rather obvious for those of you that know me...it is brown!!!! It is in fact a darker brown but that would have been to dark to paint.

Last week I used a sketch of a new massage quilt as the background for my random notes during the week. This week, continuing the Spanish theme of recent times, I have sketched in ‘high panic mode’, the four places that inspired the four pieces of music (Spanish guitar pieces) that I am listening to while having my 20 minute massage. There is a strong irony that I have used the music that is supposed to relax me to do something as exhilarating as this exercise!
These 4 pieces add up to 20 minutes and so I sketched them in that time – this also included flicking through the pdf file of my Spanish photo album to get to a photo in time to sketch. The Alhambra piece suffered the most – I had no idea it was only 3 minutes long. If anyone knows the piece of music I always imagined the waterfalls while listening to it... But after trying to sketch the court of the lions I realise that the architecture fits the piece perfectly.... My pen was going in time with the music.
Now does all this make sense?... I think it is time for me to calm down and just enjoy the music and massage!!
Another one of my text page that I will fill up during the week.
I often overwork flowers...so try to work quick and decisively and then stop! I might use this one to make a card out of it- flower sketches are good subject for birthday and thankyou cards!
I have drawn these before... The curious shaped nuts that are scattered all over our lawn – fallen from the huge turpentine tree in the centre.
My journal is A5 in size and the actual size of the nut is in the bottom left corner
I love the gothic trefoil windows!!!
Not so nice if you step on one with bare feet - which I have done often!
BTW, I am trying a new technique of obscuring private text- by adding xxx's in photoshop over the top. A bit tedious but it produces a better looking image. Kinda funny for people who start to read it!

It is funny going back to work and the feeling of not being able to sketch all the time (actually as an architect I am sketching at work...but it is not quite as much fun!) so I haven’t really sketched anything for 2 days now... Apart from the car sitting in traffic. January is supposed to be the month of lighter traffic... But not this year.
This is one of my weekly pages where I jot down random things that happen during the week – I love coming back and re-reading these. Total trivia often – like seeing a girl who has a teapot and cosy at work (like me!..well, I have had the teapot for years and have been waiting to knit a spare cosy so I can bring one to work!)
I like the challenge of integrating large chunks of text with sketches in my sketchbooks so that it flows as a whole and so that I am using it for everything in my life – having quite got to the point of writing my shopping lists in it yet....
Just using a Monday night sketchas the basis for the trivia this week.
If you bother to read my scribbles I am using my journal to keep me honest - this week I AM going to get tot he gym three times and I AM going to catch up on some of those emails.... aren't I?
Mixing the colours up in this book. I am not one for pink in general since I had to wear it (quite similar to the strong pink in the sky) for 6 years as a school uniform - never really wore it since!

One of the things that I love about my current journal is how the cartridge paper is great for pages that are predominately text... A page with mainly text just didn't feel right when I was using the watercolour moleskine... (refer link below if you are wondering what my current sketchbook is).
Here are the last 4 weeks “thoughts” pages (including this week so far). I am having fun experimenting with different layouts of text and sketch...and although I try to make the page pretty- it is the text that is most important to me.
I have found that in my travel sketchbooks I do want to record the details of the days adventures and have often just had a page of blank text which is very boring!...so it is handy to be getting some strategies in place for the next holiday....
Today I decorated my planner a little (I know, I know I said I won’t be posting too many photos of my planner on Fregoli. I promise not to (⁄ ⁄•⁄ω⁄•⁄ ⁄) ) But more importantly I met with Laura and together with Andrzej we played Monopoly.
I didn’t take any picture of us actually playing because I was too busy threatening Andrzej with divorce because he wouldn’t give me the properties I needed to make a neighbourhood.
So it goes without saying that I suffered a spectacular loss, but at least I gave all my mortgaged properties to Laura to put to use and defeat him. Justice prevailed. (✧ω✧)
So yeah...good people. Do not play Monopoly unless you want to destroy your family. I am actually curious. Has any of you played Monopoly in nice and friendly way? What other board games you enjoy?

Trying out my inktense...will taka a while to get used to the colours I think. The colour on the pencil is quite different from what it comes out like either dry or wet! (there is a little bit of watercolour in there too!)
From a photo of mine from trip to Spain in 2005 (before I was sketching!)
As my current journal (Daler Rowney A5 sketchbook) has lovely smooth cartridge paper I am feeling more inclined to write (just doesn't seem right to write over most of watercolour paper)
So I have gone back to adding more notes in my journal - from what I read from the bible and other books during the week. I started last week and made a bit of a mess with my formatting so this week I am more controlled. The flowers down the side are all Australian wildflowers copied from a wonderful book by Leonard Cronin - it is fun to open up a page of his book for inspiration.
This page will be filled with text by the end of the week and I might add a little bit on the right margin as I can see a blank area.

WC pencils are great for quick scribbles! On the right hand page I tried wetting the pencil tip and applying to the damp wash - fun!
