This sparrow nests and winters farther north than any of its close relatives. Despite the name, it is not particularly associated with trees, and many of its nesting areas are on the tundra north of treeline.

Night shot taken from the summit of mount Chaberton (3,131 m) on October 20th, 2011.

At the horizon you can see the halo generated by the moon before rising.

A huge bank of clouds and mist was hiding the world below...

Two cities are most visible, respectively on the right: Sestriere (2.035 m), the main venue during the 2006 Winter Olympic Games, and Cesana (1.040 m) that shines like a diamond necklace :-)

On top of the mountain between the two cities is visible a tiny dot of light, it's the cable car station Fraiteve (2.702 m).

This is essentially a landscape of clouds and stars, though the constellations begin to be less visible due to the coming moon... however in the night sky can still be clearly distinguished a few constellations: Auriga, Perseus, Aries, Cetus, Pleiades, and, last but not least, planet Jupiter.

Cette nouvelle version des premières images de Webb concernant le Quintette de Stephan* combinent ses données infrarouges avec les rayons X collectés par l'observatoire à rayons X Chandra de la NASA, soulignant à quel point la puissance de l'un de ces télescopes n'est améliorée que lorsqu'il est associé à d'autres.

Le Quintette de Stephan*, regroupement visuel de cinq galaxies (NGC 7317, NGC 7318a, NGC 7318b, NGC 7319 et NGC 7320) dans la constellation de Pégase (Pegasus), est une énorme mosaïque (la plus grande image de Webb à ce jour, couvrant environ un cinquième du diamètre de la Lune avec plus de 150 millions de pixels et près de 1 000 fichiers image distincts) où les interactions galactiques ont probablement entraîné l'évolution des galaxies dans l'univers primitif. Des amas étincelants de millions de jeunes étoiles et des régions d'éclatement d'étoiles fraîches ornent l'image. Des queues balayées de gaz, de poussière et d'étoiles sont extraites de plusieurs galaxies en raison d'interactions gravitationnelles. Plus spectaculaire encore, Webb capture d'énormes ondes de choc alors que l'une des galaxies, NGC 7318b, traverse l'amas (cf. NASA et merci pour la photo).

*Édouard Stephan (1837-1923) est l'astronome français qui a observé pour la première fois ce quintette en 1878, en utilisant le terme de nébuleuses, personne n'imaginant alors qu'il s'agissait en réalité de galaxies, constituées de milliards d'étoiles et situées en dehors de la Voie lactée. Mais il meurt un an jour pour jour avant qu'Edwin Hubble en apporte la preuve en 1924 (cf. wikipédia).

I’m also displaying my work at 500px

Just back from a week in Lofoten and now starting the batch editing. I definitely felt like I was due a photography trip seeing as my last proper trip anywhere was to the Faroes back in 2014. The aim was to find the northern lights as I’d missed them in Iceland and in the Faroes so it going to be third lucky hopefully- in the end we saw them three nights in a week so it was pretty good going!

This was taken near Fredvang on the island that connects the two bridges to the village. I couldn’t resist that impossibly spiky mountain and was pretty pleased when I saw the scattering of ice near the foreshore.

I’ve popped a few more shots on my website and will gradually get round to posting more, both on the website and here but trying to resist not editing them all too quickly-especially if it’s going to be another 4 years before I go on another trip!

This artillery was used during the Second World War.

It is located on the summit of Mont Chaberton, a 3.131 metres (10,272 ft) peak in the French Alps in the group known as the Massif des Cerces in the département of Hautes-Alpes.

This very impressive building was dubbed "Fort of the Clouds" and mounted eight 149mm guns in individual masonry turrets, which were often hidden in the clouds.

Built between 1898 and 1910 by the Italians to control the Montgenèvre pass, this fort was then considered as the highest and most powerful of Europe.

Nine soldiers died in this fort, and fifty were wounded.

This is an overall view, of both the Fort and the night sky above. Captured by the north point of the summit.

The fortress is facing east, and the Milky Way is now totally oriented to the west. More then one hour before moonrise (on due time I will show also the special halo generated by the moon before rising).

This is the Giacoletti hut (2.741 m) portrayed at night. Monviso area, Italy.

Having taken this photo at the end of October the shelter was closed. Fortunately was available the "winter room", as it happens in most of the alpine huts. No heating facilities inside. A small room with beds, blankets and a table... definitely a luxury for those who love to spend the night in the mountains. Better than a tent of course.

For this shot I left lit two candles, just to give a touch of light from inside. In addition there is also a delicate light painting with my torch from outside, during the long exposure, otherwise the structure would have been little discernible in darkness.

In the night sky is visible part of the Milky Way, which at the beginning of the autumn nights cuts the sky from east to west, whereas in summer from north to south.

Here it is aligned with Punta Udine (3.022 m), then the ridge goes down to the right until Coulour del Porco (2.920 m) then up again till to Punta Venezia (3.095 m).

I've taken a vertical shot as well, just to give more space to the Milky Way, I hope to remember to post it sooner or later.

Cette image prise par la caméra NIRCam de Webb montre une partie de la nébuleuse d'Orion, connue sous le nom de barre d'Orion. Dans cette région où la lumière ultraviolette énergétique de l'amas du trapèze interagit avec des nuages ​​​​moléculaires denses, l'énergie du rayonnement stellaire érode lentement cette barre, ce qui a un effet profond sur les molécules et la chimie des disques protoplanétaires qui se sont formés ici autour des étoiles naissantes.

Au centre même de la zone recueillie par l'instrument MIRI (voir photo suivante), se trouve un jeune système stellaire avec un disque protoplanétaire nommé d203-506 (petite naine rouge), dans je jeune amas du Trapèze à environ 1 350 années-lumière de la Terre dans la nébuleuse d'Orion. Le Trapèze est un amas relativement jeune formé directement à partir de la nébuleuse parente. Ses cinq étoiles les plus brillantes font environ 15-30 masses solaires, sont situées à l'intérieur d'un volume de 1,5 année-lumière de diamètre et à l'origine de l'essentiel de l'illumination de la nébuleuse environnante. Le Trapèze pourrait faire partie du plus vaste amas de la Nébuleuse d'Orion, groupe d'environ 2 000 étoiles à l'intérieur d'un diamètre de 20 années-lumière.

Dans cette zone, une nouvelle molécule de carbone, connue sous le nom de cation méthyle (CH3+), y a été observée pour la première fois. Le rayonnement UV détruisant des molécules organiques complexes, la découverte de CH3+ pourrait sembler une surprise, mais ce rayonnement UV pourrait en fait fournir la source d'énergie nécessaire pour que le cation méthyle CH3+ se forme en premier lieu et favorise ensuite des réactions chimiques supplémentaires pour construire des molécules de carbone plus complexes. "Cela montre clairement que le rayonnement ultraviolet peut complètement changer la chimie d'un disque protoplanétaire et jouerait en fait un rôle critique dans les premiers stades chimiques des origines de la vie" (Olivier Berné, Centre national français de la recherche scientifique de Toulouse).

With its quiet calls and dense coniferous forest habitat, this nuthatch may be overlooked until it wanders down a tree toward the ground. It often shows little fear of humans, and may come very close to a person standing quietly in a conifer grove.

Shot taken during the night of September 22nd 2012, at 11:51 p.m.

Location: lake Rosset (2.709 m), Nivolet plateau, Gran Paradiso National Park (Italy).

Due of different motions in the surface water, the intense brightness of planet Jupiter created two reflections! :-)

Obviously in the moments when the flow of water was returning uniform Jupiter was just mirroring in a single long brilliant reflection.

Honestly, I prefer this one, I find it most rare.

Respectively on the left and on the right of Jupiter, the stars Alnath and Aldebaran are too slightly reflecting in the water, but without generating a double reflection... they do not produce enough light to impress the first most rippled layer of water. Jupiter only succeeds because of its strong brightness, second only to the light of the Moon.

I will not go into details, but I suppose it is well known that both the Moon and Jupiter, unlike stars, aren't producing any kind of light, just reflecting... but their proximity to the planet Earth places them at the top of the brightest celestial bodies that we can see in the night sky.

By the way, about the Moon, it set an hour before behind the Basei peak (behind me and my camera)... well, despite this rather long elapsed time, yet emitted light in the atmosphere, in a way no longer visible to the naked eye but easily recognizable in this photo just looking to the high glaciers of the Gran Paradiso.

The halo behind it's just light pollution, coming from distant towns of Piedmont and Valle d'Aosta.

The Ovenbird (Seiurus aurocapilla) is a small warbler songbird of the order Passeriformes. The ovenbird was named after its domed nest with a side entrance, which looks like an oven.

The Blue tit is one the most common resident tits over most of Europe, especially in the west. They are typically woodland birds but have adapted well to living in close association with man. They are common, colourful & often noisy
