Ferniehirst from the back, or south side. The long east wing (which may have been reduced in height) contains what Nigel Tranter described as 'an immense 17th century apartment, with a huge fireplace to the north and another at the east end. Nearby is a door to a small chamber at the east end of the wing, and from this again is reached the little room in the circular tower which projects at the extreme south-east angle. This is known as the Library and is richly paneled, with an elaborately carved wood ceiling.'
The ground floor of the East Wing contains vaulted cellars and the upper floors contained the usual private accommodation.
