Last evening, as I watched this young couple celebrating with the traditional wedding dance, the joy of the moment was bittersweet for me and many of my relatives. Not long ago, the groom's brother died after a long battle with drug addiction. His memory is still close and the loss is haunting. For several of us, this event brought back other memories, also bittersweet.
My paternal roots are linked to the LaMaster family, who settled in Clark and Scott Counties in rural Indiana. As a young boy, I was immersed in the LaMaster family -- during holidays, family reunions, and regular family visits. If I had to describe my LaMaster family, I would say "simple, joyful, loving, and always smiling". I was fortunate to know my great-grandfather Jerry LaMaster. I knew him as "Pop LaMaster". He was left-handed, a great baseball pitcher, a fiddle player, worked in a sawmill, and never learned to read or write. His wife, Minnie, my great-grandmother, was simply "Mom LaMaster" to me. My paternal grandmother was Addeline LaMaster, and she married Leslie Rice. That led to my father, James H. Rice, being born. My grandfather Leslie died when my father was only 3 years old, so I never knew my Grandfather Rice. My grandmother, Addeline, remarried, to a wonderful man named Ray Drager. That led to the birth of my Aunt Linda. Papaw Drager became a seamless part of the LaMaster clan. I grew up with my Uncle Charlie LaMaster, who was the grandfather of the groom in this photograph. His son, Randy LaMaster, is the father of the groom. I also had an Uncle Ellsworth LaMaster who I saw frequently.
As I watched this wedding, my mind began to wander. I remembered the stories of Pop LaMaster playing his fiddle at barn weddings in Clark and Scott Counties, back in the 1930's. As I remembered that I could hear the sound of the strings of a guitar playing in this old barn. I suddenly could see Pop standing in a corner, smiling, playing his fiddle and puffing on his pipe, watching this young LaMaster lad dancing on his wedding day. And then I could see the broad, familiar smile of Uncle Charlie and his wife Wyona as they too watched their grandson dancing. In another corner I could see Mom LaMaster, Uncle Ellsworth, Grandma and Papaw Drager, and my Dad, all together, laughing, enjoying the dance. It was so real I thought it was real -- for a moment.
And then I realized that all of them have passed on, and I'm not that little boy watching their joy of the moment, but instead I am now the patriarch of those still living. Along with my Aunt Linda Louden, the matriarch of the family, we are the oldest ones alive and most likely the next ones to join the generation of those who have passed. I realized this is the last LaMaster barn wedding I will be a part of, and that I was seeing the end of something that went so far back in the history of our family.
With tears in my eyes, I turned to my Aunt Linda, whose tear-filled eyes met mine at that exact moment -- we both knew what we were seeing, without speaking a word.

It was a gorgeous fall day and capturing these two dancing in the leaves seemed so appropriate...
It was a stunning wedding all around, filled with so much love. <3
Both the Bride and her brother were fantastic dancers and choreographed a dance a little more elaborate than the usual dance.
