Janell Mathus had no trouble excelling in school. “Straight As in high school for the most part,” she says with a smile. “I’ve always been pretty good with the grades.”
She kept those grades up during her time at UIS, and though she would have worked hard for them regardless of assistance, she credits the Necessary Steps Mentoring Program—a Living Learning Community—for providing her support as a first generation student at UIS.

In 2003, OMA / Rem Koolhaas built the
McCormick Tribune Campus Center at the Illinois
Institute of Technology (IIT) in Chicago. 2x4's
contribution to the building was an ambitious
environmental graphics program - including
murals, wallpaper, clocks, lighting, textiles, and
signage - that expressed and contextualized the
various functions of the building. This mural
reproduced on wallpaper is a portrait of the
architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, who served
as the head of the architecture school and
designed the IIT master plan and many of the
buildings on campus.
In homage to Mies's legacy and continued influence
on the school, 2x4 etched this portrait on the
facade and on the sliding glass doors that serve
as the main entrance to the building. To enter
the building, one must step into Mies's mouth.
The image is composed of pictograms that
depict various student activities and, from afar,
read as pixels, forming the portrait.
