In 2003, OMA / Rem Koolhaas built the
McCormick Tribune Campus Center at the Illinois
Institute of Technology (IIT) in Chicago. 2x4's
contribution to the building was an ambitious
environmental graphics program - including
murals, wallpaper, clocks, lighting, textiles, and
signage - that expressed and contextualized the
various functions of the building. This mural
reproduced on wallpaper is a portrait of the
architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, who served
as the head of the architecture school and
designed the IIT master plan and many of the
buildings on campus.
In homage to Mies's legacy and continued influence
on the school, 2x4 etched this portrait on the
facade and on the sliding glass doors that serve
as the main entrance to the building. To enter
the building, one must step into Mies's mouth.
The image is composed of pictograms that
depict various student activities and, from afar,
read as pixels, forming the portrait.

Robyn Crutchfield wanted to make sure she was far enough away from home, but not too far when she chose the University of Illinois Springfield. “I enjoy the small school feel of UIS and the feeling of support I get here,” she says. Robyn served as president of the Alternative Spring Break student organization and the Tau Chi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. She’s served as treasurer of Black Student Union, which works to empower minority students.
