The ultrasound came back clear. The endoscopy came back clear. The samples came back normal. My side was hurting worse every day. I had WebMD'd my symptoms and was crying and texting my mom in a panic asking her if she thought I had pancreatic cancer (the WebMD page I'd landed on). This was her response. I should add that she was 100% correct and I'm sure I should have and did take a xanax.

I am feeling rather spunky today.

My doctor's appointment went okay today. I was given a new blood pressure medicine. I had not yet felt the affects of the one prescribed earlier this month, nor was it helping to elevate my migraines - as it was suppose to. I would have been willing to stick it out a bit longer, giving the effects time to kick in, but the doctor said it should have already.

I was also told I have Hypothyroidism. This diagnosis both irritated me and gave me a feeling of relief. It irritated me because I had been sent a notice in the mail from my doctor's office telling me that all my blood work had come back normal. But today when I was in the doctor's office talking about how I have been feeling lately, my doctor pulled out my lab results to "look over again". It only took him seconds before he went "Ohh". Don't fucking "Ohh" me. Tell me what you see, and then tell me why you are JUST NOW seeing it!!! My thyroid hormone level is way below where it is suppose to be. Add a new medication to my list of feel better agents. My relief came at finally have some sort of answer as to why I feel the way I have been feeling. I eat better now than I have in probably 10 years, yet I keep gaining and gaining weight - plateau at best. I know there are many variables to look at but this diagnosis makes me feel like maybe I am not going crazy. There really is a reason behind all of this.

The most common side effects of Hypothyroidism are:

*Feeling tired, weak, or depressed

*Dry skin and brittle nails

*Not being able to stand the cold

*Constipation

*Memory problems or having trouble thinking clearly

*Heavy or irregular menstrual periods that may last longer than 5 to 7 days

*Muscle aches

*Weight gain

*Slow heart rate

*Dry brittle hair that tends to fall out easily.

Check, check, check, ehhh, check, check, check, check, check, and check. *sigh*

Random Fact of the Day:I wear a MedicAlert bracelet - have for years. In addition to any health issues I have, I also have allergic reactions to certain drugs. I am allergic to Codeine. And Hydrochlorothiazide. And Nortriptyline (prescribed as a migraine preventative, not for depression - for the record).

I do get some sort of evil satisfaction when the medical assistants ask if I have any drug allergies - without pen in hand and then scramble to write it down what I say. And then 99% of the time I have to spell it for them.

The Link Between Chocolate and the Nobel Prize

By Jennifer Warner

Oct. 10, 2012 -- Eat chocolate, win a Nobel Prize?

It may sound far-fetched, but a new study suggests it might not be bad advice.

The results show countries that eat the most chocolate also have the highest number of Nobel laureates per capita.

Researchers say the idea stems from several studies that have shown a group of antioxidants known as flavonoids can improve thinking ability.

Cocoa and chocolate are rich in a subgroup of flavonoids known as flavanols. These antioxidants are also found in green tea and red wine.

Recent studies have suggested that flavanols seem to slow down and even reverse the decline in thinking ability that comes with age.

Some research has also shown that flavonoids can improve blood flow to the brain, which may help it perform better.

“Since chocolate consumption has been documented to improve cognitive function, it seems most likely that in a dose-dependent way, chocolate intake provides the abundant fertile ground needed for the sprouting of Nobel laureates,” writes Franz H. Messerli, MD, of St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital and Columbia University in New York City, in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The Chocolate-Nobel Link

Researchers say since eating chocolate has been shown to improve thinking ability on an individual basis, it may also have the same effect on whole populations.

Since there was no data on overall national intellect available, researchers say they used the total number of Nobel laureates per capita as an indicator of superior brain power among different populations.

They ranked a list of 22 countries in terms of Nobel Prize winners per capita through Oct. 10, 2011, and then compared it to information on per capita annual chocolate consumption.

The results showed a “surprisingly powerful correlation” between the amount of chocolate each country ate and the number of Nobel laureates it produced.

The more chocolate a nation ate, the more Nobel Prizes it had to show for it.

“Switzerland was the top performer in terms of both the number of Nobel laureates and chocolate consumption,” writes Messerli.

He estimates that it would take a little less than a pound of chocolate per person per year to increase the number of Nobel laureates in a given country by one.

For the U.S., that would mean the nation as a whole would have to eat more than 275 million pounds of chocolate per year to bring home one more Nobel Prize.

Of course, researchers say more studies are needed to prove whether the flavonoids in chocolate were the true underlying cause behind this link between chocolate and superior brain power.

I ate these spicy crickets. Not much to write home about.

WebMD: Can Eating Crickets Boost Your Health?

"... Eating crickets may help improve the natural bacteria in your gut (microbiome) and reduce inflammation in your body."

At the end of the day, you may feel something fuzzy sticking to your #teeth. This fuzzy thing is known as #plaque as the #dentists describe. The plaque is made of hundreds of thousands of bacteria. These bacteria mainly consume the remains of foods we eat. In turn, they release acids which can be pretty harmful for the tooth enamel. The acidic byproduct can lead to tooth decay and cavities. If the cavities are left untreated, the infection can spread to tooth pulp. In case the tooth pulp gets infected, there are only two things you can do; i.e. either get the pulp removed with the help of root canal procedure or get the tooth extracted.

Here, you may wonder what you can do to avoid plaque on your teeth. A few tips are worth mentioning in this regard.

•The first thing that you will have to pay attention to is to #brush your teeth. Make sure that you do it twice on daily basis.

•The interdental spaces of your teeth need to be cleaned well. It can be done with the help of flossing. It will help you get rid of the food debris and plaque buildup.

•You can use an antibacterial mouthwash. If you are able to control the bacterial presence in your mouth, you are less likely to have dental plaque. For this purpose, you can get help from the mouthwash. You can use a fluoride mouthwash to maintain the strength of your teeth.

•You may have heard about the hazards of chewing gum because gums usually have sugar added in their composition. Nevertheless, you can go for the sugarless gum which can actually be beneficial. Chewing a sugar-free gum stimulates production of #saliva in your mouth. The saliva can wash away bad bacteria.

•While you may not find it to quit eating sugary and starchy foods, you certainly have to put a limit on the consumption of such foods. We all know how dangerous the sugary and starchy foods can be for your dental health.

•If you really want to avoid plaque, you will have to avoid smoking. The major disadvantage of smoking, from the perspective of dental health, is that it accelerates the process of plaque converting into tartar. Tartar can eat away your teeth in a pretty bad way.

Apart from the tips mentioned above, you have to make sure that you visit your dentist after every six months. Remember, not visiting the dentist can have quite serious consequences for your oral and dental health. In fact, missing dental appointments can put at the risk of developing serious health conditions.

It's clear from this that I should look into buying some skincare and anti-aging products. Also noted that depression is a common problem, and that I won't really get rid of it until I'm 70+, when I start to have memory loss.

Also find it interesting that hair loss is a common problem for people under 30 and over 50 but not in the 30-50 group.

The actions that you take in order to ensure better health of your oral cavity in general and that of your teeth and gums in particular are included in preventative dental care. The main purpose of preventative dental care is to prevent the conditions like cavities, gum disease, enamel wear, and other oral health conditions. So, if you want to avoid expensive dental treatments in the future, you have got to take care of your teeth by occasionally undergoing preventative dental care procedures.

There are numerous preventative dental services that you can get. The top ones are worth mentioning here.

Adult cleaning

Regular dental cleaning at dental office is mainly done for the purpose of maintaining health if tissues. Healthy tissues help you keep your breath pleasant and your teeth and gums safe against infections. If plaque and tartar has reached beneath the gum line, the process for cleaning in this regard is usually called scaling or root planing. This process specifically removed bacteria from the pockets beneath the gum line.

Child cleaning

With the start of teething process, you will need to take your child to the dental visit. This dental visit is important because it helps you getting your child accustomed to the dental visits. Once your child gets used to the dental visits, it will be easier for the dentist to run dental exams, such as x-rays, and dental cleaning.

Since primary teeth are not very strong, you are not going to like those teeth getting decayed because any infection in those initial teeth is going to make the first 6 years of your child’s life pretty difficult.

Laser therapy

Laser therapy is a state-of-the-art process of promoting better dental health. The main purpose of laser therapy is to accelerate the recovery process after you undergo any type of dental surgery. However, it can also be used to alleviate infections and result discomfort which often occur after the surgery. Moreover, laser therapy can be quite handy in creating the bacterial balance in the oral cavity, thus reducing the probability of the occurrence of infections.

Atridox

Atridox is also referred to as doxycycline hyclate. It is essentially an antibiotic which is used for the treatment of periodontitis. With the help of this treatment, you can get your gums recovered to a great extent. And if you are able to complete the treatment, no wonder you will be able to completely get rid of the periodontitis. However, you have to keep in mind that administration of antibiotic needs to be precise.

We couldn't do it without our amazing sponsors. Thanks for your support.

You may wonder what to do if you or someone in your family has a cracked #molar. Common reasons for a cracked molar include biting on the ice or having a habit of grinding your teeth. The reason your molars are more vulnerable to cracks and chips is that they have to absorb an enormous amount of pressure when you chew your foods.

The symptoms of a cracked tooth may or may not be quite noticeable, but they necessitate a dental visit. Your dentist will look at the affected tooth to determine whether or not the crack is deep. If it is a minor crack, the dentist may want to treat it as a cosmetic issue. Deeper cracks, however, pose a significant risk to dental and oral health.

What to do when waiting for the appointment

A cracked tooth may result in little or no pain. The pain may erupt only when you eat or when your molar has to deal with the hot or cold temperature. While having tooth pain, you will have to pay attention to the location of the eruption of pain so you could tell your dentist about it. You may want to avoid chewing on the side of the cracked molar, as biting can open the crack and make the problem severer.

Minor cracks

Your dentist may not opt for any treatment if the crack is present on the upper, hardened layer of the tooth, known as enamel. The American Association of #Endodontists states that the presence of minor cracks in molars or other teeth is a common problem among most adults. These cracks are commonly known as craze lines, and they are treatable through tooth polishing.

Treatment for a crack in the molar

A crack cutting through a significant part of the enamel can result in a deeper fracture, which increases the likelihood of an inner #infection. Depending on the severity of the issue, your dentist will choose to place a #crown, perform root canal #surgery, or remove the tooth. If the crack is not overly severe, your dentist may want to treat it with a dental filling. It should fill the gap and prevent escalation in the severity of the crack.

The dentist will want to perform root canal surgery or remove the tooth if the soft tissue inside the tooth has been infected as a consequence of tooth crack. According to the American Dental Association, a root canal can be an invasive dental procedure, but this surgery can save a severely damaged tooth, which has an infected tooth pulp. The reason your dentist will want to perform root canal surgery is that it removes the infected pulp before it starts spreading infection into the jawbone and to the nearby teeth.

The dentist will want to remove the tooth as a final resort. He will go for this option when it is impossible to fix the problem using other options.

It is best to an ideal dental care regimen, which includes brushing and flossing your teeth regularly, eating healthy foods, and visiting your dentist twice every year. The biannual dental visit will help your dentist track and fix any issue while it is in its initial stages. It also includes cracks in your teeth.

What she wants is to take care of patients! So can technology empower physicians—in private practice and even in hospitals—to make the best use of the time they have with each patient? Come find out about the most advanced technology that makes all of this as invisible as possible so that physicians focus on why they became a physician in the first place.

Setting the stage for a great session - Digital Health Innovations

What to expect from COVID this winter

It was just last winter that the highly-transmissible Omicron variant co-opted the holiday season and sent COVID-19 cases soaring well into the new year. But what should we prepare for this time around? Here's everything you need to know:

Should we expect a winter COVID wave?

Public health experts are certainly worried, especially considering the rising case counts in the U.K. and across Europe, The Scientist reports. "In the past, what's happened in Europe often has been a harbinger for what's about to happen in the United States," Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, told NPR at the beginning of October. "So I think the bottom line message for us in this country is: We have to be prepared for what they are beginning to see in Europe."

Given widespread immunity following the BA.5 Omicron variant surge, mid-August forecasts from the so-called COVID-19 Scenario Modeling Hub suggested "the United States could be in for a relatively quiet COVID-19 season ... as long as vaccine-booster campaigns began quickly and new variants didn't emerge," Nature reports. But it's also not yet clear if the European "surge" is a result of "behavioral changes and climate," like colder weather pushing gatherings indoors where the virus is more likely to spread, or something more sinister, Justin Lessler, an epidemiologist involved with the modeling hub, told NPR. If the former, Lessler said, the U.S. "might be able to avoid similar upticks if there is broad uptake of the bivalent vaccine." But if it's the latter, something like "immune escape across several variants with convergent evolution, the outlook for the U.S. may be more concerning."

And Americans haven't exactly been running to get their new bivalent boosters: As of Oct. 28, just 22.8 million people over the age of 5 — 7.3 percent of the U.S. population — had received their updated combination dose, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Meanwhile, new immune-evading "Omicron offshoots," like BQ. 1, BQ.1.1, and XBB, have been gaining traction globally, and will very likely soon take center stage in the U.S. And though weekly cases have been on the decline since July (despite a slight uptick in the week ending Oct. 26), the levels of virus circulating in wastewater in Northeastern states like Pennsylvania and Vermont also suggest a surge is imminent, per NPR and Time.

Separately, an analysis from the University of Washington estimates "far fewer infections ... than last winter's estimated peak daily average," but predicts global cases will still "rise slowly to about 18.7 million by February from the current 16.7 million average daily cases, driven by the northern hemisphere's winter months," Reuters summarizes. On the upside, the increase in cases is not expected to cause a surge in deaths, per the analysis.

Speaking of new variants ... what are they?

Unlike variants past, the latest strains of concern aren't that of a new Greek letter, The Washington Post reports. Rather, they're a "group of immune-evading Omicron spinoffs ... popping up all over the world." Each represents a different "flavor" of the virus, "adorned with a similar combination of mutations" that, most concerningly, appears consistently successful in blocking humans' main line of immune defense. Perhaps most adept at doing so is the XBB variant, a strain formed from a combination of Omicron subvariants B.A.2.75 and BA.2, according to the Japan Times. XBB only recently arrived in the U.S. after tearing through the largely vaccinated Singapore, per The New York Times.

Otherwise, U.S. health officials have said they're "very carefully" monitoring emergent subvariants BQ.1 and BQ.1.1, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. The two strains are "our greatest concern right now, both for the number of mutations, but also for the impact and the phenotype that we are worried that they may imply," CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said recently. Taken together, BQ.1 and BQ.1.1 made up 27.1 percent of U.S. cases as of Oct. 28 for the week ending Oct. 29, per the CDC's tracker. The subvariants do not seem to cause more severe illness than their parent strain BA.5, but they are more transmissible.

According to Dr. Anthony Fauci, Biden's chief medical adviser, the country is "certainly in a better place than we were many months ago," but "we need to watch and follow these things very carefully, because we want to make sure we have a good handle on what is going on with regard to the emergence of variants, and what impact they're going to have on any trends we are going to see in winter," per the Post.

What is the "tripledemic"?

When taken alongside the rise in flu and RSV cases (RSV being a respiratory virus for which kids are especially prone), White House officials fear a winter COVID surge could give way to a so-called "tripledemic" — or a "nasty collision" of all three viruses, the Times reports. Per WebMD, children's hospitals are already seeing a surge in pediatric RSV cases, while flu season, meanwhile, is "off to an early start."

The surge in the three viruses "is almost predictable at this point in the pandemic," Dean Blumberg, MD, of the University of California Davis Health, told WebMD. "All the respiratory viruses are out of whack."

What can I do to protect myself from COVID and the "tripledemic" this winter?

First and foremost, get vaccinated for both the flu and COVID-19. Even if you get infected, the bivalent booster and/or primary series of COVID vaccinations will protect you from serious disease and death. Wash your hands often, and always stay home from work or school if you're feeling sick. Wear a mask if you can.

If you're relatively healthy, "none of those viruses is a big threat to you necessarily," explained the Times' Apoorva Mandavilli, but they are "a threat to our health care system, which is already so stretched." So do your part to ensure hospitals remain accessible for those most vulnerable to COVID and the "tripledemic," like children, pregnant people, and the elderly. "The boosting is the thing that has to get buckled down," cardiologist Dr. Eric Topol told the Times. "As a nation, we are terribly under-boosted."

"We need everyone to step up," added White House COVID-19 Response Coordinator Ashish Jha. "This is literally about saving lives of tens of thousands of Americans this fall and winter," and "[t]he great news here is that, unlike past winters, we are in control."

We're in Massachusetts right now and asparagus is in season. Wendy's family really likes it, so I've eaten it about three or four times in the last week. You may or may not know this, but eating it makes your pee smell funny.

I thought this happened to everyone, but according to WebMD, this isn't necessarily so. They quote a study that found only the smell, which is caused by a sulfur compound called Mercaptan that's broken down by digestion, was only present in half of one population studied. Also, a different study found that 10 percent of another population could not detect the odor.

Poor Yorick's Almanack: The Odor of Processed Asparagus

Have been sick with a bad cold - started at the beginning of the week; I think I'm over the worst -

www.webmd.com/cold-and-flu/cold-guide/common_-cold-symptoms

Common cold symptoms usually start between one and three days after you are infected by a cold virus. Typically, they last for about three to seven days. At that point, the worst is over, but you may feel congested for a week or more. During the first three days that you have common cold symptoms, you are contagious. This means you can pass the cold virus to those you come in contact with.

Since there is no cure for the common cold, treatment has two goals: to make you feel better and to help you fight off the virus.

Lots of rest is the key treating a cold. You may find you need 12 hours of sleep each night, so don't set that alarm. You'll be most comfortable in a warm, humid environment. It's also important to drink lots of water. This makes mucus flow more freely and helps with congestion.

Chicken soup has been heralded as a cold therapy since the 12th century. Recent scientific evidence shows mild support for the notion that chicken soup reduces cold symptoms, especially congestion.

For many, having perfect pearly whites is something that we strive for. Often, people want to figure out if they should go with the easy, painless and most inexpensive way to improve their appearance, and you can do so through teeth whitening. In as little as 30-90 minutes, you can get a better smile.

With our diets including a lot of beverages that stain teeth, sometimes brushing twice a day isn’t enough to get rid of it, especially if there is a brownish stain left on your teeth. Patients are typically surprised when a Kennewick dentist uses a simple teeth whitening treatment, and you can have a much healthier and dazzling smile that looks cleaner, improving your confidence each day. There are a few options to choose from, and you might wonder which is better.

The first, is a professional dentist. This is a safer, quicker, and a result that lasts much longer. These only take about 30-90 minutes to do, and they even remove tough stains. Along with this, you might even get a professional prescription whitening kit to help with your smile at home.

If you want to do it at home, you certainly can as well. This is an option for those that might want to do it themselves if they feel like it’s the best approach. However, these don’t show quick results, and often, they’re rarely as vibrant as you want them to be. Along with this, sometimes the person is sensitive to the chemicals in there and it could potentially ruin the enamel and the overall health of your teeth. If you’re going to do this, you should consult the dentist before getting this.

However, you can get good results from both of these. If you want to have good middle ground for your teeth, try getting an over-the-counter whitening kit. This is a good one to try if you’re looking to get a great smile after a treatment. They’re often prescribed after a professional treatment by a dentist, and they can definitely help keep the effects there for a long time.

Now you might wonder of the cons of each of these. There are a few, and often they should be considered. For a professional whitening, it can be pricy, and even though it lasts a while, you’re going to have to pay out of pocket, because insurance rarely covers something like this. That’s a major factor to consider when you’re looking to get something like this, if you’re able to pay for it. However, it gets the best results.

With a whitening kit, they’re not as effective as a direct, professional approach and while they’re great to supplement, you also have to realize that you need to ensure that you do it every single day in order to get the best results possible. Often, it requires some diligence, and people might forget it, thereby sacrificing the treatment.

For any do-it-yourself type of approaches, you have to remember that the biggest problem, is you might not see results right away. You might not get the results that you desire from this if you’re going in with the notion that you’re get a photo finish smile. These don’t have as many chemicals as the others, and they might end up ruining your enamel. They might not brighten as much, and some of the methods that are listed are often considered ineffective. There’s a lot of false information about teeth whitening too, so there is that to consider as well.

If you’re going to get any sort of whitening, it’s important to start with your dentist first. They can tell you of the best treatment that you can get, with your own personal costs taken into consideration as well. If you go to your Kennewick dentist, you’ll be able to get all of the information that you need, and which one will give you the results that you believe are the best ones possible. If you’re willing to, they might even have the treatments that you so desire, and if you take the time to do the research on this, you too can have a killer smile.
