The Stasi perfected the technique of psychological harassment of perceived enemies known as Zersetzung – a term borrowed from chemistry which literally means "corrosion" or "undermining".
By the 1970s, the Stasi had decided that methods of overt persecution which had been employed up to that time, such as arrest and torture, were too crude and obvious. It was realised that psychological harassment was far less likely to be recognised for what it was, so its victims, and their supporters, were less likely to be provoked into active resistance, given that they would often not be aware of the source of their problems, or even its exact nature. Zersetzung was designed to side-track and "switch off" perceived enemies so that they would lose the will to continue any "inappropriate" activities.
Tactics employed under Zersetzung generally involved the disruption of the victim’s private or family life. This often included psychological attacks such as breaking into homes and messing with the contents – moving furniture, altering the timing of an alarm, removing pictures from walls or replacing one variety of tea with another. Other practices included property damage, sabotage of cars, purposely incorrect medical treatment, smear campaigns including sending falsified compromising photos or documents to the victim's family, denunciation, provocation, psychological warfare, psychological subversion, wiretapping, bugging, mysterious phone calls or unnecessary deliveries, even including sending a vibrator to a target's wife. Usually victims had no idea the Stasi were responsible. Many thought they were losing their minds, and mental breakdowns and suicide could result.

Positief denken
Bij de gevaarlijkste drogredenen van onze tijd behoort de slogan: "Je moet daar positief tegenover staan".
Wie negatieve kritiek uitbrengt voelt zich bij die zin in het defensief gedrongen; erger, hem wordt de mond gesnoerd.
Er gebeurt in feite meer. Mensen willen degene die probeert klaar te zien, verhinderen de waarheid te zoeken of ze bekend te maken, ze willen hem de weg versperren. Het is hem niet toegestaan zich af te vragen of niet precies het omgekeerde van wat de mensen hem aansmeren de waarheid is. Hij moet positief staan tegenover de pietluttigheden der positieve profiteurs voor wie het gevaar alleen komt van wie de vraag naar de waarde durft stellen.
Vernuftig was de man die de slogan der positieven lanceerde. Geslepen zijn ze, degenen die die slogan constant in de mond nemen.
Het is met dat positieve gesteld als met het alternatief. De een of ander komt met een voorstel aandraven waar de nonsens afdruipt. Als je het afwijst, verheft hij zijn stem met de vraag: "En wat is je alternatief?" Hij lijkt aan de goede kant te staan. Maar hij vergeet - en wil vooral de anderen doen vergeten - ten eerste dat niemand hem om een voorstel vroeg, en ten tweede dat het afwijzen van krankzinnigheden niemand tot andere krankzinnigheden verplicht, zelfs niet tot het uitdenken ervan. Ze zijn niet te tellen, de brave mensen die laten begaan en die dus worden gefopt.
Zo vergaat het de slachtoffers der positieven. Wie al jaren stelselmatige afbraak meemaakt en er volgens de afbrekers positief moet tegenover staan en alleen zogezegd opbouwende kritiek mag uitbrengen, wordt allicht fatalist en zwijgt uit beleefdheid of om bestwil.
Het kost nochtans weinig denkmoeite om wat orde op die zaken te stellen. Wie positief staat tegenover het onbenullige, is onbenullig. Wie positief staat tegenover het negatieve, is negatief. Het is schande, positief te staan tegenover het imbeciele.
