Close to Bickford House, just off to your left is the Toronto Star Building’s ornamental parapets. The seven Indiana limestone panels and 2 granite panels are stacked on the grass like a stepped pyramid almost four meters tall.

What is a Parapet? A parapet is a low protective wall on the end of a roof, bridge or balcony. These panels used to be at the very top of the former Toronto Star Building near King and Bay.

Designed by Chapman and Oxley, the highrise was built in 1929 and demolished in 1970. At 22 stories it reflected the geometric and floral motifs of the art deco movement and was the second tallest voluntarily demolished building in Canada.

The building is also a pop culture icon and rumored to have been the inspiration for Superman’s Daily Planet Building. Joe Shuster, the comic’s co-creator, worked at the Toronto Star when it was still called the Daily Star and the building’s first appearance shares quite the resemblance to the Toronto high rise - minus the giant golden globe.

Originally sunk in 1858 the Ely Colliery dates from 1878 and comprises the Naval No.2 pit. This was one of two upcasts of the combined Naval Collieries, the other being Nantgwyn. The shaft was 15ft. dia. & 450 yds. to Nine Feet seam - also worked Upper Four Feet. Fitted with a 14'-6" dia. Schiele fan.

The small quantities of water from this mine were raised by lowering a 224 gallon tank into the sump three times a week and discharging at the surface.

December 10th. 1880 - one hundred & one men & boys were killed in an explosion at this mine when owned by Messrs. Moses, Rowlands, Williams & Morgan.

The Manager at the time was Moses Rowlands, a nephew of one of the proprietors, who was certificated on the basis of "previous experience" as opposed to "by examination".

At a subsequent Home Office Inquiry it became clear that his only experience had been as a clerk and assistant to his father who had been Manager at Penygraig house-coal pit.

Although it was established that numerous offences under the Mines Regulation Act had been committed which could have contributed to the explosion, and for which the Home Office sought to have the Manager's certificate revoked, the Inquiry simply handed down a rebuke together with a warning and the requirement that more frequent visits by the Mines Inspectorate be made to advise the Management.

Another fact to emerge was that most of the officials at the mine could neither read nor write and their reports were written-up by the Time-keeper and Lampman - this practice was, in fact, very widespread at the time.

This Manager also adopted the role of the colliery Surveyor although he had no formal training in that discipline.

Sunday 27th. January 1884 - another explosion killed fourteen men, three of whom were rescuers. One of these, Daniel Thomas, the proprietor of the adjacent Dinas colliery, was the holder of the Albert Medal 1st. Class.

The cause of this explosion was "injudicious use of blasting under fiery conditions" (also killed were over sixty horses).

The owners at that time were Messrs. Rowland & William Morgan, the manager being Daniel Herbert James.

On Sunday 21st. September 1884 both Moses Rowlands and his brother Morgan Rowlands, ex manager of Penygraig & Dinas collieries died after short illnesses.

This mine was one of many to experience great hardship during the depression of 1884-87 and in January 1887 part of the plant had to be sold off to pay outstanding Parish Poor Rates.

January 2nd. 1888 - the Naval Colliery Co. Ltd. set up with capital of £150,000 to purchase the Naval collieries - Directors L.B. Gueret; L.W. Wood; E.C. Bregeon; Colonel E.D. Hunt and J.E. Gethin.

The formation of this Co. allowed the mine to reopen after being shut for 14 months.

In 1895 the Upper Four Feet, Nine Feet & Six feet seams were worked on the S. Wales system of longwall, the stalls being 12 yds. wide.

The Five Feet seam was worked on the Nottingham system, the stalls being 40 / 50 yds. wide with a central gateway.

August 1909 - Seven men died at the Ely colliery when the steam winder ran out of control sending the ascending cage into the headgear which then fell into the shaft and landed on the cage at pit-bottom in which twenty eight men had just descended. This shaft was 14' dia. and 523 yds. deep.

February 1916 - the Ely pit was put on stop for the duration of the war due to a shortage of men, many of whom had enlisted. The remaining 350 No. men were transferred to other Cambrian pits.

March 1939 - death of Mr. George Phillips of 21, Gilfach Road, Penygraig - Undermanager of Naval Colliery for over forty years.
