Messing around with my 35mm f/1.8 and the canon 500d closeup lens, and I think an extension tube too... bigggg

About a year ago I posted a few flower shots - and after quite a few trips to brookside and other places (where I've taken hundreds of photos and often posted nothing), I've managed to think more about composition and what might work up very close - and focusing on strong colors too...

A view of the River Thames from the south bank, just past Shornemead Fort.

Roughly 200m east of the fort, the first of two WW2 pillboxes. The second is roughly 60m further east.

It's just the base of the structure, it's described as follows at Kent County Council's Heritage Map: "Its superstructure is no longer extant and appears to have been a flat roof supported on steel girders". The map is at webapps.kent.gov.uk/KCC.ExploringKentsPast.Web.Sites.Publ... and shows all sorts of old historical sites, including shipwrecks...

In the Thames itself is Shornemead light, which replaced Shornemead Lighthouse earlier in 2004.

My brother-in-law installed the marble tile backsplash. We used about 25 sq. ft. of tile, so even with the supplies this part of the transformation only cost just over $300--thanks to free labor of course!

Another cheap fix was the sink--my mom found it brand new at a yardsale for only $5. You can see the what our kitchen looked like before here.

In these two connected and inspired works, renowned aboriginal artist Robert Houle meditates on his upbringing and the Christian beliefs he learned in school. The landscape of his youth and the teachings of Apostles Thomas and Mathew are represented in these pieces.

This early Smith & Wesson rimfire revolver carries patent dates of 4/3/1856, 7/3/1859 and 12/18/1860 on the revolver drum. Serial Number 17097 (or I7097?). According to www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Category4_..., "In 1856 Smith & Wesson formed their second partnership to produce a small revolver designed to fire the Rimfire cartridge they patented in August of 1854. This revolver was the first successful fully self-contained cartridge revolver available in the world. Smith & Wesson secured patents for the revolver to prevent other manufacturers from producing a cartridge revolver - giving the young company a very lucrative business."

I'm curious to know how well it works with Safari or Opera, so if you use one of those I'd appreciate it if you would send me a private message with your experience. Thanks.

Update: Reports are that it works well in Safari.

33-year old Australian football (soccer) player Tim Cahill, formerly with Everton of English Premier League, is now playing for New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer. He was down at Circular Quay to promote FIFA13 Ultimate Team, a webapp for playing football (soccer).

Everton fans have given him the nickname Tiny Tim after the Charles Dickens character because he is slightly short and slim. He is actually 1.78m (5' 10") tall.

It's a good amount for a "small". Around $5. Yummy. It's probably the sauce that makes it yummy, but...the meatballs are good too. Potatoes were great too. Not that potatoes could be screwed up that much.

I used to eat swedish meatballs a lot growing up because the local market near us had it in their prepared foods section. Swedish meatballs and rice, mmm!

If you make one of these stars starting with a 22" square of elephant hide (the short end of the size I can get), it fits perfectly between the screws of a Tyft lamp from IKEA.

I don’t really consider photos taken over pints of Guinness in Red Star to be pro-level shooting, but I thought these came out well and captured a nice moment in time.

More to the point I am shocked at how clean they look considering that they were shot at ISO 6400. I know that some folks looks down on the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 as being neither the cheep starter prime or the fancy L-series f/1.2 but honestly it has produced some great pictures for me.

Of course, after these shots were taken, several of the liquid variety of shots were also taken and things sort of went downhill from there. But, like I said, I liked how they turned out.

It was a little too mellow of a night at Red Star for my fiduciary tastes but it gave us room to grab a booth and carry-on largely unmolested by a rowdy crowd. All told, it was a nice night out with friends, even if Luca somehow ended up in Liz’s scarf and later passed out into a bear-like slumber on my couch. Clearly, a good time was had by all.

For those who fancy a little data about how the shots were done, they were shot at the aforementioned ISO 6400 on a Canon 5D MKII with the also aforementioned Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM. They were processed from RAW in Aperture then put through Nik’s Color Efex Pro 4 and Nik’s Dfine anti-noise software. This was one of the rare times when Dfine didn’t automatically select the areas to de-noise but they cleaned up nicely with a little manual massaging.
