The body of government weapons inspector Dr David Kelly (in second vehicle) is removed from a Woods near his home where he was found dead from an aparent suicide. Dr Kelly had become embroiled in the WMD debate and "sexed up" dossier on Iraqs weapons capability which formed part of the basis for the invasion of Iraq. Whilst the official version of events is that he committed suicide a number of conspiracy theories have sprung up around his death.

We used this leaf and others for leaf rubbings today. My son found the gorgeous American Sweetgums.... Brilliant Red trees on Ross Ave. in San Anselmo, yesterday. They have the seed pods that look like medieval weapons. Some apparently call these "yard mines".
Yesterday, as we were standing under this tree.... the sun was gleaming with a few puffy white couds around 3:30pm... great lighting... I look up and see this perfect branch of red leaves, green pods, all against the blue sky with clouds, and I DIDN'T HAVE MY CAMERA!!! It would have been an awesome shot. Today, when I had time to go back, no sun... grey day. I bet all the leaves will be off the tree by the next time I have the opportunity... Oh well! This is what makes photography fun and challenging, I suppose... Like painting too, you are always seeking that spectactular moment in time image.

Anti-war / anti-nuclear weapons activists converged on the Naval Submarine Base Kitsap-Bangor on Saturday May 10th, 2008 in a Mothers Day commemorative action. Participant's engaged in a traditional vigil and nonviolent civil resistance direct action to oppose the weapons of mass destruction as they exist in their offensive capacity on the base. The offensive capacity of the weapons is in contravention of several legally binding international agreements. Unfortunately, the United States Government is in flagrant violation of these treaties. The abnegation of international law by the Government of the United States of America imperils the world. Decision-makers behave in ways that are Machiavellian. They employ the Hobbesian model of power-politics where "might makes right" and the "ends justify the means", which is then applied to international discourse. However, there is a better way.
By respecting international laws and agreements, the United States can help to promote and create an international environment of equity and respect.
One of the problems with the trident nuclear missile programs is that in addition to their purported role as a well-intentioned defense, these missiles also serve as a basic international bully mechanism. The trident missile system deployed via Bangor submarine base is estimated to be capable of wreaking a several months' long nuclear winter over much of the globe.
Instead of operating in the realm of power-politics where the application, or the threat of application, of brute force hangs over international proceedings: I challenge the Government and the People of the USA to pursue a better way. I challenge the Gov't and People of the United States of America (including myself) to work for a foreign policy that truly values human rights, human dignity, human health, environmental health, fairness and equity, truth, honesty, respectfulness (for ourselves individually, for each other, and for the Earth). The means create the ends.

Here is where the missiles would be loaded, not unlike loading the rounds for artillery. Besides being armed with regular warheads, the Tomahawk can also carry a thermonuclear payload.
Eight of these things can be found on the Iowa, which would total 32 missiles ready for launch. The attack on the Syrian airbase last week had 59 Tomahawk missiles strike it. Either more than one ship fired missiles, the battleship that did launch them had more ABLs, or the ABLs were reloaded in the process of launching the missiles, although no crewmember wants to be that close when the missiles are launched from their ABLs, if you have seen the video of those things taking off.
These photos were part of a tour I had made of the Iowa with a friend back over three and a half years ago. I had been slow in posting them all -- which means I still haven't gotten them all up yet. This missile attack of last week reminded me about these launchers, so I went through my files and decided to share them here, after doing some cropping and tweaking on Photoshop.
