Freedom Burning Artwork by Andrew Kong Knight

Artwork Statement:
“Freedom Burning” illustrates the erosion of American freedom in the Nuclear Age. The base of the mushroom cloud represents the destruction of the Native American dream to live peacefully on their own land, the land the white pioneers took away from them.
The Iwo Jima soldiers at the top of the cloud are contemporary icons, representing the need to fight to preserve out freedom. Juxtaposed against the mushroom cloud, their purpose in the painting becomes ironic, since post-World War II wars have been more often about protecting America’s position as a superpower—at the expense of both American and non-American lives.
“Patriotism,” in the words of Bertrand Russell, “is the willingness to kill and be killed for trivial reasons.”
As in George Orwell’s prophetic novel, “1985,” Americans are told by today’s politicians that nuclear weapons are a necessary evil because “war is peace.” “Freedom Burning” unveils the hypocrisy of this myth.
The flag burns just as the American dream of freedom burns each time an unjust war is fought in the name of politics.
