I think it's a mistake to worry too much about what sort of materials you use, but I have to admit I have a favorite tool: the solid graphite pencil. It's oh so soft!

The STG-44 and gewehr 43's were painted using Tamiya Red Brown (XF-64) for the wood furniture, and a darkened Vallejo Natural Steel (70.864) for the gunmetal, giving a more metallic look. A black wash was applied afterwards to bring out some smaller details.
Just got interested in steampunk recently, so I tried building a pistol out of thrift store parts. Not sure if it will hold together, but I tried :)
