Goats might not be the first thing you'd connect with a Botanic Garden. Yet here they are; a motley mob of very happy, healthy looking wethers, and one doe.
In a time of suspicion over the origins of the SARS-CoV-2 in a laboratory, of the aggressive invasion of Ukraine and the threat of unconventional weapons in retaliation against stern resistance, talk of biological weapons seems unsettling. That is no less than has been unleashed here.
Deep in the wilder parts of the ANBG this group of goats contained behind an electrified fence has been deployed as a means to clear overgrowth of the, err, undergrowth. Preferring not to use mechanical clearing or herbicides and apparently yet to be drawn into the fantasy of "cultural burning", the ANBG has instead unleashed the ultimate biological weapons: goats, the Greatest Of All Time.
I have an affinity and affection for goats. Legend has it that I was weaned straight from the breast to a cup of goat's milk. If you look about here you'll find South African goats carelessly disregarding mining, goats attempting to befuddle a too wise bear in Belgium and busking goats in Morocco. It was time to bring you some more goats.
Like the elephants with jobs in Zambia, clearing undergrowth with goats is not animal exploitation. It is animal employment. Here a well loved and cared for herd of goats are simply doing what goats do, and at the same time ensuring their protection and welfare. It's a win-win. The ANBG quietly and safely has scrub cleared and the goats get a perfect browser's diet safe from predation and with a handy tarpaulin erected for their comfort just in case it rains.
Here's my boyfriend's favorite sport (besides football) It's called JUGGER (: And I love watch him play!

With a little ingenuity, parts of the ruined ship can make a servicable weapon. But will it be enough?
