I went benching with Bob the Bencher yesterday.
Here is a one of the freights we benched.

I made it out onto West Clark Bench for a second time in a little over a year, this time driving out from the top on dirt roads and hiking out to it about 2 miles. You wouldn't want to see where I was standing to get this shot, though: it was pretty scary. Unfortunately, nobody was there to document my death-defying feat. Suffice it to say I had to brace myself and hold the camera out over thin air with my left hand.
My first goal was to get out to the narrow promontory where the bench turns sharply east. I found it has a number of "cliffhanger" views that I will share from time to time. This one looks northwest toward House Rock Valley. That's Buckskin Gulch down there about 700' below.
West Clark Bench and Buckskin Gulch are on the Utah side of the state line that runs through the valley below. The Wave, visible from here (out of frame to the left), is on the Arizona side. WCB is a fun place to explore, just like Coyote Buttes--no permit required. A local told me, "It's pretty out there... don't tell anyone." I had it all to myself that day.

PRODUCER'S TASTING NOTES
Colour: Lively and passionate amber.
Nose: Clean, elegant, floral (pleasant & refreshing fragrance of the butterfly orchid), fruity and seductive. With hints of honey, tropical fruits (mango in particular), pear drop, vanilla, coconuts and suggestions of chocolate.
Palate: A hint of sweet mango juice with that spicy complexity and gentle warmth on a medium, oily and citrus finish.

this is a lightweight, casual, spring/early autumn coat. the pattern is the same as my winter coat flic.kr/p/2pgnJRW i can wear the collar down loosely or as in the photo more rounded closer to the neck (for the photo held with a pin). i'll be looking out for a brooch in natural colours, possibly wooden, to hold the collar in this position when wearing. i'm not ready to do buttons though i may sew on a hook and eye if i can hide them when the collar is not in this position
the true fabric colour is more of a light hessian brown. it's a boucle, wool blend. i think more blend than wool though i bought three and a half metres at £10 per metre. eventually i will line this coat. i'm looking at the tutorials
it was a very unforgiving fabric to work on. i finished off the seams with plenty of zigzag stitching
i did make a mistake at the back. when cutting out the fabric i lengthened the front of the coat from that shown on the pattern but forgot to lengthen the back of the coat! i could have shortened the front to the same length as the back but i wanted the extra length. decided to add extra fabric to the back and hope it wouldn't look a mess. it looks fine. obviously a mistake but i can live with it.
