About the photographs.

This is the tip-off (basketball speak for start of game, similar to football’s “kick-off”).

On the left side is Cardiff Met Archers’ Mara Marchizotti, wearing jersey number 15, attempting to reach for the ball.

On the right side is Nottingham Wildcats’ Kennedy Nicholas, wearing jersey number 30, and managed to reach for the basketball.

About the teams.

The Cardiff Met Archers started in 1999, as a university basketball team. They have about 19 different teams, range from Under-10s to Seniors, and men’s teams as well as women’s teams.

About the photographs.

The first part of the photo shows Cardiff Met Archers player Abigail Yunker, in dark jersey and shorts, attempted to block Nottingham Wildcats player Brahe Ashton. While the Wildcats player number 12, Mari Stewart is seen on the left side of the photo, running over to help out.

The second part shows Ashton making an effort to throw the basketball and pass it to Stewart, while Yunker continues to try to block her.

The third part shows Ashton had threw and passed the ball to Steward.

In all shots, in the background are the rest of the Wildcats players sitting down, waiting for their turns.

Kenrick Liburd is the Wildcats coach, seen on the right side, in dark outfit that looked like a naval officer’s uniform. He recently left Nottingham Wildcats to move onto new opportunities.

Note: I attempted to do research on finding out the names of the players, and as best as I could find out, those names are the likely names of those players.

Special thanks to members of Cardiff Met staff for allowing giving me permissions to shoot the event from courtside.

About the photograph.

This is one of the Nottingham Wildcats players (seen on the left) attempting to dibble closer and hope to take a shoot at the basket, while the Cardiff Met Archers player wearing jersey number 9, attempts to move into defensive position.

This shot was taken with a 28-200mm f 3.8 zoom lens, set at F-stop of f 5.3 at the 82mm length. The ISO was set as high as the Nikon D200 can manage at ISO 3200.

At that time, the arena did not have strong bright indoor lights, unlike the newly redeveloped arena as seen in my photos of the 2022-23 season. It was as best as I could manage. The reason why my later photos looked better is because I used a fast 50mm lens, shot from courtside, in brighter lights.

The photo was cropped in Adobe Lightroom for a closer capture of the action.

The game ended with Archers 73 – 78 Wildcats.

About the photographs.

In this photo, this is Archers player Mara Marchizotti, born in Argentina, shooting the ball to the backboard. Not sure if she scored, but it is highly likely as she had often scored a lot.

The Wildcats player wearing number 11 on the back is Kayla Shaw.

The two players wearing the dark kit are Cardiff Met Archers players, on the offensive, here one of the in the background, is in control of the ball and trying to decide what to do, should she dribble around the defensive player, or pass it onto her team-mate, the one nearest to the camera, seen holding up her arm.

The other players in the white kit, are the visiting Oakland Wolves players. The game went on to end with Archers 80 – 73 Wolves.

Many special thanks to the staff of Cardiff Met Archers for granting me permissions to shoot the game from the sidelines.

About the photograph.

The blonde woman wearing the white kit with the number 91 on her back, seen in the centre of the photograph, is Jorjah Smith for Oaklands Wolves.

She was in control of the ball a few moments before this photo was taken.

Abigail Yunker playing for Archers, had sneaked up behind Smith, managed to pull the ball away, Yunker spun around, and is seen here running on offense with the ball.

She is the one with the long dark hair, slightly in front of her team-mate, the dark haired one with the bun, wearing number 9 on her back.

The two other Wolves players, seen on the left of the photo, and the other one on the other side of the court, appears to be picking up speed, in order to get to their end of the court, for the purpose of getting into defence mode.

Smith does not appear to be moving fast, most likely reeling from Yunker’s surprise move.

By the way, in the upper right of the photo is a video camera operator. This game was filmed and shown on YouTube, and I had found myself in the background of the video.

The game ends with Archers 80 – 73 Wolves.

Many special thanks to the staff of Cardiff Met Archers for allowing me to shoot the game from courtside.

About the photograph.

This is the Australian Cassidy Gould, in the white kit, playing for Oakland Wolves, and dribbling with the ball. I have not found out where in Australia she was born, only that she was born on 19th February 2000.

Getting in her way is the American born Cardiff Met Archers player, Lauren Saiki, born on 10th March 1997 in Monterey Park, California, United States.

About the photograph.

This is Shannon Hatch in the dark kit with the number 22, playing for Cardiff Met Archers attempting to shoot the ball into the basket, and scored two points.

Hatch was born in Lausanne, Switzerland on 23rd October 1993, I believe she had since left Archers and now plays for a different team.

The photograph was shot in colour, I used Adobe Lightroom to convert the shot into black and white for a dramatic feel.

Special thanks goes to Cardiff Met Archers for allowing me to take the photography from the courtside.

About the photograph.

This is the American born Alyesha Lovett playing for Nottingham Wildcats, taking a free throw and shooting for the hoop.

Most of the Cardiff Met Archers players are seen having a quick chat, likely to be talking about their game plan, in the background and their faces partial hidden by the glass backboard.

To the right of the photo, is the Cardiff Met Archers player number 6, British born Stefanie “Stef” Collins, watching Lovett doing the shooting.

Stef Collins went on to become the head coach of Archers in the 2020s.

This shot was taken with a 28-200mm lens having a maximum of f 3.8, and from the seating on an upper level. The view of the basketball court is partial blocked by the backboard at one end of the court.

At that time, the arena did not have strong bright indoor lights, unlike the newly redeveloped arena as seen in my photos of the 2022-23 season, so I had to make do with low light levels, even when pushing the ISO speed to the camera’s maximum.

Special thanks to the members of Cardiff Met staff for giving me permissions to shoot the game from courtside.

I had been taking the photos with a 50mm lens, as it was the only lens, I have that is fast enough. The 28-200mm would have limited aperture which would have given me slow shutter speed. I spent the whole game going up and down the sidelines, looking for best possible shots.

At the end of the game, the score was Archers 69 – 75 Wildcats.

One of the Archers players had shot the basketball, not sure which one as I was busy framing and shooting. Could have been the Argentina born Mara Marchizotti, wearing jersey number 15.

The Wildcats players are Kennedy Nicholas wearing jersey number 30, and Mari Stewart with number 12, both are from America.

Cardiff Met Archers vs Oakland Wolves, Women’s British Basketball League (WBBL) match on Saturday 18th March 2023. Game played at the Archers Arena, Cardiff Metropolitan University, in Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom, during the 2022-23 season.

About the photograph.

This is one of the Oakland Wolves players, having a very short and quick chat with one of the officials. Here, you can see the official’s hands, as he does a gesture of what had happened.

I have not been able to identify who she is, as the information seem to be missing from one of the basketball website, which I used as source for information.

On the back of the official’s T-shirt is Molten, which is the company that manufactured the basketballs, including the official balls for the top level games. Molten is sponsoring the game official’s uniform.

I converted the colour photo into black and white in Adobe Lightroom, to give it a good old fashion newspaper feel.

Cardiff Met Archers vs Nottingham Wildcats, Women’s British Basketball League (WBBL) match on Saturday 21st January 2023. Game played at the Archers Arena, Cardiff Metropolitan University, in Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom, during the 2022-23 season.

About the photograph.

This is the 25 years old, American born Abigail Yunker, playing for Archers attempting to throw the ball to her team mates. Yunker was born in Whitehouse, Ohio.

In the front of her, is the 26 years old Kayla Shaw of Nottingham Wildcats, trying to be careful not to commit a foul while attempting to block Yunker. Shaw is also an American, she was born in Phoenix, Arizona. She is now playing for a team in Finland.

With special thanks to the members of Cardiff Met staff for giving me permissions to shoot the game from courtside.

I had been taking the photos with a 50mm f1.8 lens, as it was only fast enough than the 28-200mm lens I have, for the indoor shots. I was allowed to go up and down the sidelines, as long as I don’t get too close to the playing field.

At the end of the game, the score was Archers 69 – 75 Wildcats.

The shot was turned into black and white in Adobe Lightroom, for a dramatic sports action feel (I hope).

About the photographs.

In additional to the basketball players and the action being more important, it does not tell a full story about basketball. I figure to try to take some shots of the officials, because they’re also important to the game as well as the players.

Those photos were shot in colour, but I figure to turn them into black and white for a bit of “journalism style” feel to the pictures.

In the first one (0858): This was taken when the ball was out of play, and the players were having a one-minute time out for a quick discussions about their plans.

That moment was taken just after the end of the time out, and when the players were heading back into the court, to take up their positions.

This official went and took up his position near the courtside, and I decided to attempt to frame the shot and took it.

In the second one (0882): Here, the official is in action, watching the players.

He is watching Nottingham Wildcats’ Kayla Shaw, the one holding the ball, attempting to pass Cardiff Met Archers’ Lauren Saiki, whom was blocking Shaw.

The name Molten on the back of the official’s shirt, is the name of the company that manufacture the basketballs, and are sponsorship of the officials at British top professional basketball levels.

Many special thanks to members of Cardiff Met staff for giving me permissions to shoot the game from courtside.

About the photographs.

This is British born, Nottingham Wildcats player Brahe Ashton wearing jersey number 1, attempting to block, but careful not to comment a foul, the opposite player.

The opposite is the American born Abigail Yunker playing for Cardiff Met Archers, wearing jersey number 2.

In the photo, Yunker is attempting to find an opening, to pass to any of her teammates, but she was unable to do so, and decided to move to her right, and get around Ashton.

About the photograph.

The Cardiff Met Archers player Lara Habling could be seen just behind the Wildcats player wearing jersey number 30, just to the left of the photo.

She is the one who attempted to shoot the ball from her position there, at the basket and hope for a 3 points shoot. You’ll notice the official holding up three of his fingers to signal an attempt for 3 points.

However the attempt failed, the ball bounced off the backboard, and is on a rebound.

Here we have Nottingham Wildcats player Kayla Shaw (closer to camera) watching the ball, and hoping to catch it.

I thought to change this shot into black and white in Adobe Lightroom for a dramatic effect.

With special thanks to the members of Cardiff Met staff for giving me permissions to shoot the game from courtside.

About the photographs.

During the warm up and before the tip-off (basketball speak similar to football’s “kick-off” term), I took those photos of Cardiff Met Archers’ mascot.

I think the first photograph, file 0069, may have bad focusing. I spent years using manual focus camera, but haven’t used an Auto-Focus digital camera much during the years as a busy single parent, so I’m really rusty with AF settings and skills.

Point of note: I’ve no idea who is in this dragon outfit, I never thought to ask.

Point of note: I’ve no idea who is in this dragon outfit, I never thought to ask.

About the teams.

The Cardiff Met Archers started in 1999, as a university basketball team. They have about 19 different teams, range from Under-10s to Seniors, and men’s teams as well as women’s teams.

The women’s senior team (seen here in the photograph) is the only team in a top-level elite franchise-based league. They joined the Women’s British Basketball League when it was first set up in 2014, and to date, are still in the WBBL.

The Nottingham Wildcats is an English women’s basketball team based in Nottingham, England, and was founded in 1976. As a successful team in the English Women’s Basketball League, the Wildcats became one of the founding members of the WBBL.

They had two Championships in the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons, and also won the WBBL Cup during the 2017-18 season.

The Women’s British Basketball League is a top-level franchised based basketball league in the United Kingdom, and a sister to the men’s British Basketball League (BBL). It was announced in June 2014 and started with the 2014-15 season.

About the photographs.

Nottingham Wildcats player, likely to be Macy Cook, on the floor holding the ball, had just a few seconds ago botched an attempt to catch the ball passed by her team mate. She attempted to reach for the ball which was rolling on the floor, but fell down.

Cardiff Met Archers player wearing jersey number 10, Isabel Bunyan tried to get the ball, but also fell down, and ends up on top of Cook.

About the photographs.

This is the Cardiff Met Archers player, Abigail Yunker from America, in the dark jersey number 2, running and dribbling. She was attempting to reach the opposite backboard and attempt a shoot.

Hot on her heels is the Nottingham Wildcats player, Kayla Shaw also from America, trying to catch up, overtake, and hopefully get in front of Yunker to block her.

About the photograph.

This is Canadian born Jahnae Gyles, playing for Nottingham Wildcats, having a debate with one of the officials. She is attempting to explain that she did not attempt to block the Archers player. The official appears to be listening calmly.

About the photograph.

The reason why my later photos looked better is because I used a fast 50mm lens, shot from courtside, in brighter lights.

The game ended with Archers 73 – 78 Wildcats.

About the photographs.

Top left: The British born 19 years old Isabel “Issy” Bunyan, of Cardiff Met Archers wearing jersey number 10, the one with the flowing ponytail, is seen here attempting to dribble around the Nottingham Wildcats player.

The Wildcats player in the photo is the 27 years old Mari Stewart, wearing jersey number 12, born in Californian, United States. She had signed up to play for Nottingham Wildcats from 2022 onwards.

Middle photo: Bunyan made an attempt to leap up and toss the ball toward the basket instead of dribbling ahead to get closer. Note her feet are off the floor as she shoots. Stewart attempts to knock the ball but did not manage to do so.

Bottom right: This was taken very few seconds later, showing that Bunyan’s shoot paid off, and she scored two points. Steward had run on ahead, prepared for a rebounded, but can only watch the ball go through the net.

Many special thanks to members of Cardiff Met staff for giving me permissions to shoot the game from courtside.

Cardiff Met Archers vs Nottingham Wildcats, Women’s British Basketball League (WBBL) match on Saturday 21st January 2023. Game played at the Archers Arena, Cardiff Metropolitan University, in Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom, during the 2022-23 season.

About the photographs.

The woman wearing jersey number 3, with the ball is American born Lauren Saiki, playing for Cardiff Met Archers. Here, she is seen getting procession of the ball and is on the offense.

Swiss born Shannon Hatch, wearing jersey number 22, is likely to be staying next to the Nottingham Wildcats player Kennedy Nicholas, to stop her from going for Saiki.

Special thanks to members of Cardiff Met staff for giving me permissions to shoot the event from courtside.

About the teams.

The Wales based Cardiff Met Archers started in 1999, as a university basketball team.
