It was designated a Michigan State Historic Site in 1958,[2] is a contributing property to the East Ferry Avenue Historic District and Cultural Center Historic District, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.[1] The house has been owned by Wayne State University since September 2014.[3]
The Detroit Public Library (DPL) is the largest library system in the U.S. state of Michigan by volumes held (after the University of Michigan Library) and is the 20th largest library system (and the fourth-largest public library system) in the United States.[2] It is composed of the Main Library on Woodward Avenue, which houses DPL administration offices, and 23 branch locations across the city. The Main Library is part of Detroit's Cultural Center Historic District listed in the National Register of Historic Places adjacent to Wayne State University campus and across from the Detroit Institute of Arts.
Designed by Cass Gilbert, the Detroit Public Library was constructed with Vermont marble and serpentine Italian marble trim in an Italian Renaissance style
The Charles Lang Freer House is located at 71 East Ferry Avenue in Detroit, Michigan. The house was originally built for the industrialist and art collector Charles Lang Freer, whose gift of the Freer Gallery of Art began the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC. The structure currently hosts the Merrill Palmer Skillman Institute of Child & Family Development of Wayne State University. It was designated a Michigan State Historic Site in 1970[4] and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971
Charles Lang Freer, in partnership with Col. Frank J. Hecker, made his fortune from the Peninsular Car Company.[5] Freer travelled widely, with one of his favorite spots being Newport, Rhode Island.[5] There, he was favorably impressed by the shingle style summer cottages built by the wealthy. Desiring a similar home, in 1890 Freer contracted with Wilson Eyre to design a home in Detroit.[5] The house, on Ferry Street next door to Hecker's home, was completed in 1892.

The Chatsworth was constructed in 1928 in the Italian Renaissance style and designed by the firm of Pollmar, Ropes & Lundy. The building is now owned by Wayne State University for student housing. An unusual feature of the Chatsworth for its time was an underground parking structure--another example of how the automobile was affecting architecture and the urban landscape.
