Hello all my Flickr friends. It's time for another little break before the summer is all gone. So I'll be off line for a couple of weeks. Thank you all for your kind comments, awards, invites and support. It is always most appreciated. In the meantime, keep on clicking that shutter, and I hope to see you all very soon. Take care, my friends :)
"I've been talking drunken gibberish
Falling in and out of bars
Trying to find some explanation here
For the way some people are
How did it ever come so far
"Sail away with me honey
I put my heart in your hands
Sail away with me honey now, now, now
Sail away with me
What will be will be
I wanna hold you now"

A spur from the main Helensburgh railway line taking trains straight onto the pier where passengers could board the ships. I’ve always known this, what I found out today from the excellent www.railscot.co.uk website is at that one point there was a hovercraft service between Greenock and Craigendoran! #waverley #waverleypaddlesteamer #paddlesteamer #psps #ship #ships #boat #craigendoranpier #helensburgh #nikonphotography #nikonphotographer #nikon #nikonfz #railscot

Escorting the Cunarder Queen Victoria down the Clyde
A memorable evening's cruise onboard the famous Paddle Steamer P.S Waverley was had by all , as she escorted the Cunard Liner MS Queen Victoria down the Firth of Clyde on the 28th July 2010. The communication between the two ships was great , with the big liner blowing her massive horn and the Waverley replying with her lovely sounding steam whistle. Here we see the old ship steaming ahead at about 15 knots to give herself room to turn around and make for her home in Glasgow and stopping off at Greenock Customs House Quay.
2016 - marked the 70th Anniversary of her launch
2017 - marked the Anniversary of her Maiden Voyage
2019 - Withdrawn from service pending new boilers
2020 - She took on Pre-booked passengers only for sailings for two very short weeks before she had a head-on collision with Brodick Harbour ramp with slight injuries to crew and passenegrs onboard. She was quickly withdrawn from service pending an authoritive report. This was enough to put her into an early winter Lay Up in Glasgow

This rare, vintage PS Waverley enamel badge and accompanying backing card is a lovely example of late 1940s nautical and railway memorabilia. Made by H W Miller, this intricately cut-out badge (a characteristic of Miller's work), shows the delightful Waverley sea paddle-steamer, which still, to this day, remains the last seagoing passenger paddle-steamer in the world.
Built in Glasgow by shipbuilders A & J Inglis (1946), the Waverley began service with the London and North Eastern Railway in June 1947, plying her trade on LNERs Firth of Clyde steamer route between Craigendoran Pier, near Helensburgh and up Loch Long to Arrochar. During her first year of operation the twin funnels were painted red, white and black.
The link with the railways of course is further illustrated through the attached backing card, informing the buyer that his/her donation contributed towards the funding of the Railway Servants' Orphanage in Derby. This type of early charity badge was one of many different railway owned lake steamers and locomotives (approximately 30 different types) that made up the series. The Derby Orphanage was established in 1875 for the children of railway workers who had died in service.
This orphanage, renamed St Christopher's Railway Home in 1948, catered for up to 300 children, but numbers started to fall after WW11 and the large orphanage was demolished and replaced by two smaller homes in 1977. In 1993 the one remaining home closed ending a fascinating chapter in British railway social history.
When the railways were nationalised in 1948, all Scottish steamers migrated to the Caledonian Steam Packet Company (CSP). The Waverley's funnels were painted yellow, as depicted on this badge and the association with CSP lasted until 1973.
PS Waverley now operates under Waverley Excursions Ltd and her current summer tourist itinerary includes the West Coast of Scotland, Bristol Channel, South Coast of England, London and the Thames (the latter two venues in October).
