Blue magic at Uttakleiv. A 5 sec exposure at the rugged beautiful shorelines of Uttakleiv in Lofoten, norterhn Norway.
I check the surf forecast every day as I just love photographing the ocean. It is the most wonderful feeling to sit for hours in the morning with my monopod on a beach with Vivaldi in my ears with big beautiful surf rolling in. As I sit there I never know whats happening next and what shape and type of wave is going to come in. Here in Bronte we are blessed to have the sun rise in the east behind the waves which means you can capture the most glorious light coming through for up to 2/3 hours after sunrise.
Anybody who photographs waves knows and understands that you can take tens of thousands of clicks a year and maybe end up with 10/12 good wave shots. A lot of the time I leave them marinating for weeks and months on end. I come home and my eyes are full of surf and salt and I need to step away for a while and then return.
With this wave that I took in September last year I have come back to it numerous times and played around with it in lightroom/photoshop/nik software for hours on end. And finally yesterday I arrived at the place where I felt happy with the edit.
I wish I had more time to spend on flickr to interact with my pals on here as you guys have all been such an influence on my photography journey. Thank you for your kind and supportive comments and again I will say it would be great for those of you not yet on Instagram to join so that I can stay more connected .
When a glassy wave is beginning to barrel it reflects the horizon on it's face. When it passes that 90 degree angle the reflection flips upside down. Here you can see the colors of the beach, the white wash up on the sand, & the trees above the beach, all flipped :)
A thoroughly enjoyable couple of hours spent on the beach at Newhaven. I’m so lucky to live relatively near this location whenever the storms visit the south coast.
I would normally split my time and shoot from the base of the cliffs to include some shots of the breakwater and lighthouse in my compositions but with a film crew present at the cliff base, it was straight onto the beach and get as close as I can to the shoreline.
Thanks for viewing, take care and have a great weekend :-)
This image was shot high in the Sierra's under a smoke filled sky, during last Summer's wildfires. When the wind is just right small waves form off the boulders below the surface. I thought this tiny wave looked like a water serpent emerging from the lake, with a golden smile after taking a bite out of the sun. :P
Hard to get an edge to edge crispy lookout with full frame. For that reason I tend to shoot mostly crop sensor in the waves. But on this day I went for it, & the gamble paid off.
Another frame from a perfectly aligned wave. I can't wait for the sun to move back along the horizon.
Taken yesterday, mid-day, under a spooky sky. 1/800, f/4.0, iso 1000. For non-photographers those are camera settings I would normally use in the waves 15 minutes before sunrise. This image is barely edited; no saturation added. Oh ya, and for those not aware, California is currently under a blanket of smoke from all the wild fires, causing this eerie vibe.
Inside a light filled, warping, barreling, mirroring, crashing, vortexing wave. A lot going on in this one ;)
Rarely have I seen a barrel flare so round and perfectly....so I was very excited to pop out the back of this wave, check my little screen, and see that I GOT IT! haha :P
Here's something I had never seen happen before in the waves. I think Dr. Strange is about to step through...
I was very thankful the water decided to do this as the sky was glowing. Have a great weekend everybody. & thanks for all the love on my last post ❤️
Another shot from the clear days of Spring 2015. (time/date stamp wrong & can't edit on my phone)
Thanks for all the comments/faves/follows via my last image!
Last night the weather/surf report was looking pretty good for today to produce. So I woke up this morning & drove to the usual spot & it was delivering the goods:) The sun was peaking out through the clouds & barrel after barrel came flying over my head for about 45 minutes. I hadn't seen the inside of a barrel in over a week so I am still super stoked! Then, one wave later the wind shifted onshore, brought the fog with it, & ruined everything! haha. It was an awesome 45 minutes though!
Today was pretty special. The Ocean is alive & it allowed me to be a part of it; even if it was only for a short time:)
Thank you to everybody for this awesome week! I haven't had much time in the water so it has been super fun making some new flickr friends!
"The sea is emotion incarnate. It loves, hates, weeps. It defies all attempts to capture it with words and rejects all shackles. No matter what you say about it, there is always that which you can't." -Brom
Making the most of my short time at home:)
Probably the smoothest wave I have ever seen...The low light slowed the shutter speed just a tad too much, but kinda added to the smoothness...So I'm okay with that:) Taken a few waves after I face planted, as mentioned in a previous post :P
& speaking of slow shutter....Go check out laatideon 's photostream. Your mind will be blown by Deon's slow shutter waves! He is a true artist with his camera.
Here's his slow shutter album: blurry blurry
