I composed this photograph while walking a path in undeveloped desert land near Palm Desert, California. It is intended as a companion to my previous post, a photograph from a logging road in rural British Columbia.
This desert landscape is somewhat unruly and rough, I'll admit. But that's the way nature is somehow. So I'll admit I was saddened when I learned from a fellow walker that this land was scheduled to be turned into a tourist waterpark. This precious land, overlooking beautiful desert mountains.
Evergreen Wings & Waves Waterpark is an indoor, all-season educational waterpark that includes ten waterslides (ranging from slides for the little ones to slides for daredevils), a wave pool and a hands-on museum dedicated to teaching students about the power of water. Slide out of a real Boeing 747 aircraft sitting on the roof, and enjoy a day of educational fun!
I'm sure this water park makes more sense with water in it... But really now... A horse, some blue posts, and a giant sunflower that sprinkles water down. Plus some farm animals painted on the ground.
I'm not sure, but horses, flowers, and chickens don't exactly scream "WATERPARK!" to me. But then, I'm not a kid anymore either.
On March 26-28, Drenched Fur, Erie PA's Annual Bear event, held yet another fun-filled run! About 200 guys attended. The weekend included performances by Bearapalooza at Craze Night Club, a night out at the Zone Dance Club, a trip to Presque Isle Downs Casino, a winery tour, a buffet dinner with a performance by comedian William Brown, a private party at Splash Lagoon Indoor Water Park, after parties and great times with friends!
Photos are by Rob Colburn.

Wings & Waves is hard to miss since a massive Boeing 747 aircraft sits atop the building and several slides begin their descent from within the airplane. This makes it unique since it's the only waterpark in the entire country where you can slide out of a real airplane.
Wings & Waves is a climate controlled indoor waterpark where natural gas heaters keep the water at a comfortable 84 degrees. Attractions here include ten waterslides, four of which originate from within the rooftop Boeing 747. Other activities include a 91,000-gallon wave pool, interactive water play structure with a 300-gallon tipping water bucket, toddler area with bubblers, fountains and tot sized slides and a leisure pool with spa.
Wings & Waves waterpark is located next door to the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum with one of the greatest collections of aircraft and space artifacts in the world. The waterpark was formerly called Evergreen Wings & Waves, but is now under new ownership and the name was changed.
We stopped by the abandoned waterpark located a few miles east of Barstow, California. This place changed hands a number of times over the years with each owner less successful than the last. It was last operational as a waterpark about 20 years ago. The last time we visited, before the pandemic, a new owner had taken possession and had big plans for development. He was going to put in a race track and also sponsor various kinds of competitions on the grounds for graffiti artists, skate boarding, etc. Those dreams evidently came to naught. Now most of the buildings have been destroyed as a result of arson and vandalism. However, the property is still an attraction for graffiti artists.
Hard to believe this was taken at Scarborough, England. Looks too St Tropaz to be on our charming, quaint coast!
The Waterpark
Sing a song of summer,
Of sunshine and of fun,
Of brilliant joy and artful play,
That long outlasts the sun.
Sing a song of splashing
And lighty lapping waves,
Of howls and of hoots
That echo in dark jungle caves.
Sing a song of screaming,
Of dropping from on high,
Of the wind that tugs and whistles
As you go whoosing by.
Sing a song of friendship,
Playing out on the beach,
That grows and blooming lives
Twining through the years it will reach.

I've passed this place many, many times over the years, and always wished I could check it out. Today was the day. A huge waterpark, with many pools, slides and amusement areas. All very well constructed. But, WTF could they have been thinking when they built this? It is along I-15, but reaching it requires leaving the interstate and driving a few miles. On top of that, it is truly in the middle of nowhere. Somebody lost a heap of money.
So, I found an easy entry, but I'm here to tell you it was one spooky place. Not a soul around. But, man, it was a trip.
