In the Middle Ages, Villingen was a town under Austrian lordship. During the Protestant Reformation it remained Catholic. Villingen came to international attention when it was besieged by Marshal of France Camille d'Hostun, duc de Tallard on 17 July 1704. Colonel Von Wilstorff put up a stout defence of the outdated fortifications, and after six days the siege failed.
Schwenningen remained a village until the 19th century. In 1858 the first watch factory was established, and watchmaking and precision mechanics have been important industries ever since. The town styled itself "the greatest watch city in the world"[3] at one time, and the Kienzle Uhren watchmaking company was founded there in 1822 and remained until moving to Hamburg in 2002. The Museum of Clockmaking celebrates the town's clock and watchmaking history.
As part of the Baden-Württemberg territorial reform of 1972, Villingen and Schwenningen were merged with a number of surrounding villages to form the city of Villingen-Schwenningen. Nevertheless, the two halves of the city are separated by a plateau and remain distinct. Villingen is a former part of Baden, while Schwenningen is a former part of Württemberg.
Villingen is a major center of German Carneval celebrations. The traditional Narros represent the old citizens of Villingen: Alt Villingere, Morbili, Narro, Suribbel.

This old bridge is the obligatory passage to access the Cirque de Consolation.
This grandiose natural site in the Dessoubre valley, in the heart of the Franche Montagne in the Comtois watchmaking region, is particularly green and relaxing. By crossing this bridge, we enter a somewhat mysterious world, as if out of time. We walk there between rocks and torrents, under the cover of a mossy forest traversed by many resurgences of water, which takes us far from civilization.
If you are lucky, after a period of heavy rain, you can admire the impressive Lançot waterfall.
A monastery of the Minimes order was founded there in the 17th century. The buildings have been renovated to accommodate visitors.
It is a place for hikers but also for contemplatives and nature lovers.
The whole has been classified as a Historic Monument since 1913.

Léon L. Gallet (1832–1899), watchmaker, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and past family patriarch of the Gallet Watch Company of Switzerland,[1] is considered as one of the primary architects and founders of the 19th century industrialization of the Swiss watchmaking industry.
The son of Julien Gallet (1806–1849), who moved the family watchmaking business from Geneva, Switzerland, to the manufacturing district of La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1826, Léon L. Gallet was responsible for the creation of numerous Swiss and American watch brands.[2] Among these was the prestigious Fabrique Electa, which became the upscale line of the jewelry department at Macy’s Department store in New York City during the first quarter of the 20th century. Léon L. Gallet also established the brands National Park, Continental Watch Company, Jerome Park, Bridgeport, Eureka, Commodore, Union Square, and Lady Racine.[3] While the appearance and function of many of Gallet’s timepieces were tailored to the tastes of the American consumers, all of the movements in these watches were manufactured in Switzerland.
Léon Gallet played a philanthropic role in the business, cultural, and social life of his native home. As well as his prominent position as a member of both the legislature of Neuchâtel and the Council of La Chaux-de-Fonds, he was for many years, the president of the Société des Amis des Arts (Fine Arts Society) and Grand Master of the Free Masons. Together with Louis & Jules Courvoisier, Ernest Francillon of Longines, and Constant Girard-Perregaux, Léon Gallet founded the Société Intercantonale des Industries du Jura (Intercantonal Society for the Industries of the Jura Area) in 1876. The purpose of this organization was to assist in the promotion and distribution of products from Switzerland's Watch Valley while addressing the growing threat of competition in European markets from American watch manufacturers.
Upon his death in 1899, Léon Gallet bequeathed a sum of 43,000 Swiss Francs (today equivalent to 1,000,000 Swiss Francs or approx. 1,000,000 US dollars) to his hometown of La Chaux-de-Fonds, of which 25,000 Swiss Francs were earmarked to build the Musée International d'Horlogerie (International Watch Making Museum).[4] Donated by Léon Gallet’s son Georges, the museum’s collection was started with a body of over 100 of Gallet's most complicated and valuable timepieces, including the world's first wristwatch produced for mass consumption in 1892. The balance of the bequeathed funds was used to construct the Musée des beaux-arts de La Chaux-de-Fonds (Beaux Arts Museum of La-Chaux-de-Fonds), designed by renowned painter Charles l’Eplattenier and architect René Chapallaz, Le Corbusier's architecture teacher.
Prior to his passing, Léon Gallet commissioned René Chapallaz, to design "Villa Gallet". Situated in "Parc Gallet" in the southern part of La Chaux-de-Fonds, "Villa Gallet" still retains its original name and is considered as an important historic contribution to the Swiss Art Nouveau movement of the late 19th century.

Everyone has their own definition of what "Handmade" means to them and what they visualise those "types" in their mind. I have photographed here 2 distinctive polarities. Firstly you'll see a crafted shot of individual small pieces of paper positioned, fanned and curved to capture light and structure. (Then) Secondly, you'll see the finesse of "Handmade" with the skill of a master in watchmaking ... and of course with all photography with it likes and dislikes it's very much in the eye of the beholder.

Finally, I received my Hamilton! One of the Jazz Collection models.
The Hamilton Watch Company was founded in 1892 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA, and has been producing quality timepieces for well over a century.
Their accurate timepieces were used by the US Railroad.
1940: During WWII, Hamilton stopped producing consumer watches and began developing new timepieces exclusively for military purposes. Nearly one million Hamilton military watches have already been manufactured.
1957: Hamilton’s advanced engineering and innovation led to a significant breakthrough in timekeeping—the first electric watch. Ventura shocked the market and became an instant success.
1965: The Cadillac tailfins of the ‘50s inspired the design of the Ventura, which became the preferred watch among icons of American style.
Elvis Presley sports this model in his movie Blue Hawaii.
Since 1974, Hamilton has been part of the Swatch Group, and in 2003, it relocated its headquarters and production to the heart of the watchmaking country in Biel, Switzerland.
It is one of the two ports of the commune of Versoix in the canton of Geneva in Switzerland. It is located on Lake Geneva. Choiseul was won over, as was Voltaire, a great defender of the project which would offer a direct outlet to the watchmaking factories of Ferney.

My Yema Rallygraf chronograph watch. Yema is a French watchmaking company that was founded in 1948. They make some great watches, including the 'Superman' diving watch that was the first 300m waterproof watch back in the early 1960's. French Navy wear them, even the French astronauts wear Yema 'Flygraf' watches ... i'm feeling a touch of French pride wearing this. Allez ...
This 'Rallygraf Glace III' watch is inspired by the 60's original Rallygraf racing car watches. I'm sure that wearing this watch has totally enhanced my driving skills as I oversteer my heafty Volvo around those tight corners on the gravel backroads around my place ... or is that understeer ... well it just feels good.

I walked down here while still in lock down. I have never seen this medieval street so quiet and no cars parked, it was lovely.
Just a little history from Wikipedia !!
The Spon End neighbourhood started to form in the 12th and 13th centuries CE, when dyers and tanners congregated just outside the city wall next to the Birmingham road near the River Sherbourne. A fortified gate was built across the road in this area soon after 1391, which became known as Spon Gate. Dyers and tanners chose the area because it was far enough out of the city that they wouldn’t disturb the residents with the foul smells of the substances used in their trades. They also needed easy access to clean water, provided by the river Sherbourne. Spon Street at this time was lined with bars and tenements, stretching from what is now the West Orchards shopping centre to the junction of Allesley Old Road and Hearsall Lane. Through the 14th and 15th centuries Spon Street continued to be dominated by the cloth and leather trades, with tanners, dyers and saddlers making up the majority of the residents. By the 19th century, though, the balance had shifted; at the 1851 census, as many as 137 households in Spon Street were involved in the watchmaking trade.[3]
Few jewelry brands have such an illustrious history as the House of Harry Winston. Founded in New York City in 1932, by Mr. Harry Winston – an innate gemologist, an intuitive business man, and a dedicated philanthropist – the brand continues to set the standard for the ultimate in fine jewelry and high-end watchmaking. Known throughout his life as the "King of Diamonds", and the "Jeweler to the Stars", Mr. Winston's innovative design philosophy – in which the individual gemstones, rather than the metal settings, would dictate each design – helped to revolutionize fine jewelry designs, and remains at the cornerstone of a timeless aesthetic that continues to inspire all Harry Winston creations. From the acquisition of some of the world's most famous gemstones, including the Jonker, Hope, and Winston Legacy Diamonds, to adorning generations of famous faces, from Hollywood legends to international Heads of State, for over eight decades, the Harry Winston name has been synonymous with the best that there is. Today, the House of Harry Winston continues its tradition of creativity, rarity, and quality without compromise in its retail salons around the world, including: New York, London, Paris, Geneva, Tokyo, Hong Kong, and Shanghai.

A counterweight dragged a rotating machine which in turn dragged a cover that rotated around the lightbulb which thus allowed for alternating between light and darkness.
Cordouan lighthouse was one of the first in the world to use this technique taken from the science of watchmaking.

FVG - Pesariis - Giant paddle clock. Around 1930 the digital flip clock was born in Pesariis. The hours and minutes printed on palettes that rotate like the pages of a book. System used in billboards until the end of the 1900s.
In the vicinity of a car park stands this paddle clock invented by a certain Solari. A key figure in the development of the watchmaking industry, according to local folklore, Solari settled in Pesariis around 1700.
The provenance of Solari, a fictional figure but with historical bases, is not clear, so the theories are many: the main hypothesis identifies him with a Genoese pirate in exile, who would have settled in the northern territories of the Republic of Venice to escape his enemies and creditors, then he would put his knowledge of mechanics and astronomy to good use by dedicating himself to the construction of clocks.
Utrecht is the seat of Roman Catholic and Old Catholic (Jansenist) archdioceses and of the county court of law. Its university (1636), one of the oldest and largest of the Dutch state universities, has many special schools and a library partly housed in the palace of King Louis Napoleon. Utrecht has numerous museums, including the Central Museum (art, history, archaeological findings), the Netherlands Railway Museum, the Netherlands Gold and Silver Museum, the Clock and Watchmaking Museum, the Museum of Modern Religious Art, the Old Catholic Museum, and the National Museum “from Music Box to Barrel Organ.”

The unique creation of Alta Orologeria Dolce&Gabbana becomes a permanent part of the heritage and exhibition itinerary of the Pinacoteca, in a special setting inside the Sala Federiciana.
Presented for the first time at the Biblioteca Ambrosiana on the occasion of the Dolce&Gabbana Alta Orologeria event in December 2019, this extraordinary example of watchmaking and craftsmanship, finds a new home in the same place where Leonardo da Vinci’s Codex Atlanticus is on display. The precious collection also includes a sheet dedicated to the clock of the Abbey of Chiaravalle, with a detailed drawing of the mechanism and numerous notes by the Florentine genius who, fascinated by the complexity of its gears, studied for a long time how to improve them.

The Gros Horloge is a historic monument from the 14th century, located in the center of Rouen. It was built in medieval times to allow the city's inhabitants to know the time and regulate their daily lives.
Symbol of the city and its independence as a municipality, the clock has survived the ages and wars.
In the immediate vicinity of the Gros-Horloge is a belfry dating from the 14th and 15th centuries, which explains the bays with radiant Gothic tracery on the penultimate level and flamboyant Gothic on the last.
Originally, a wooden spire crowned the whole, but in modern times, a classical-style dome was preferred. It replaced an older belfry, which was razed after the Harelle revolt (1382), accompanied by a ban on the people of Rouen building a new one, but, ignoring this, under the pretext of building a clock tower and no longer a belfry, the inhabitants rebuilt it in 1398.
It originally housed the mechanism of the Gros-Horloge as well as the bells on which it rings.
The Gros Horloge is a masterpiece of watchmaking technology. It is composed of several elements that allow it to function. The clock mechanism was made in 1389. The clock itself was installed during the same year, which makes it one of the oldest public clocks in France and even in Europe. It has kept its single hand, which is also one of its specificities. The week on the dial of the Gros-Horloge changes every day at noon. The days of the week are not written, but represented by deities on a chariot: Luna, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn and Apollo. It also inspired many later monuments and is one of the ancestors of the Big Ben clock tower, built by Augustus Pugin and passed through Rouen two years earlier during a study trip to France. The Big Clock is also older than the clocks of Prague and Venice.

The Grassy building is at the beginning of the Gran Vía de Madrid (Spain). It was one of the first built upon completion of the first section of the avenue.
It is located near Alcala Street, right next to the Metropolis Building, dividing the passage between the street Caballero de Gracia and Gran Via. It consists of two separate houses in a triangular plant, both connected by a lobby located on the ground floor. The name of the building is due to the establishment in 1952 did the watchmaker Alejandro Grassy on the ground floor.
At the beginning of the XXI century Rolex ad house (a golden crown) it stands out. From this same time the building houses a museum dedicated to watchmaking.
