While I have been to Rialto Beach on the Olympic Coast a number of times before, it was usually after an overnight on Second Beach, Shi Shi Beach, or even in the Ozette Triangle area. As a result, I'd never been more than a mile or so in. The large amount of driftwood right at the trailhead was always impressive, however the seastacks were never too inspiring (and walking on the loose rocks was never super fun).
Due to Covid closures or overnight quota reductions, in March or April of this year, around the time we usually kick off our backpacking season - usually on the Olympic Coast, we committed to Hole in the Wall located a couple miles up Rialto Beach.
I don't know if we were just turning around early on previous visits, if I just wasn't seeing things, or if new stacks all of a sudden appeared (I suspect the turning around part), but it was great! The stacks are as dramatic as, or more so, than the other beaches, the campsites were nice, and there was plenty to explore. The nice sunset colors helped out also.
We've since been back for another overnight already, and it will be added to the list of spots for an annual visit, possibly more for a through hike further North one of these trips.
