Well it was warmer to stay in with the tulip petals than to venture out in the high winds today :)

Rare November 'Warmth'. And with this image November is finally in the box ;-)

the warmth of the sun warming the cold soul

Is there anything better for cheering a grey and chilly day than an unexpected ray of sunlight illuminating autumn leaves?

Denny Mountain, Snoqualmie Pass, Washington

Even as the sky cleared to blue on the snowshoe hike described in my previous post, the surrounding mountains were still engaged in a dance with the clouds, leaving their peaks stubbornly veiled in gray. Every now and then the clouds would lift briefly, as though they were going to twirl away and leave the mountains exposed in full view, only to settle back down in front of them yet again. The tease would last just long enough for me to plant my snowshoeing poles in the snow, remove my gloves, and retrieve my camera from where it was seeking warmth inside my jacket. Then just as the camera came out, the clouds would drop again.

This pas de deux went on for most of the hike back to the parking area. But after I stepped off the trail into the parking lot and removed my snowshoes to walk to my car, the clouds that had enveloped the top of Denny Mountain suddenly vanished, revealing its snow-capped peak brilliantly illuminated by the late afternoon sun. The dazzling sight stopped me in my tracks, and my first thought was to grab for my camera. My second thought was that perhaps trying to take photos in the middle of a busy and slippery, snow-covered parking lot was not such a great idea! So carrying my snowshoes and poles, I trekked back into the deep snow of the trail area as quickly as I could, and was fortunate to find a spot where I could get a clear view of the mountain before the clouds lowered the curtain yet again. It was the perfect conclusion to a wonderful winter adventure.

Postscript to the Epilogue

I did not need to venture to the mountains to find snow this weekend as a snowstorm dumped quite a bit of it in the lowlands, including 7 inches at my house. So my "hiking" consisted of a few miles of tromping through the wonderful fluffy snow from my house to nearby parks and neighborhoods. A couple of photos are included in the first comment below.
