Wardruna - Yggdrasil
Indie Recordings
Release date 25th of March 2013 (22.03.13 Norway and G/A)
Norwegian heathens Wardruna have completed work on their latest album ‘Yggdrasil’, which is set for release on Indie Recordings on March 25th 2013.
Four years has passed since Wardruna enchanted their listeners with their mesmerizing debut album ‘gap var Ginnunga’, which also was the first part of a planned trilogy. In the ensuing years the group have spent a lot of time on adapting their music to a live format and establishing a live band. This resulting in a handful of very special concerts, perhaps most notably when they performed in front of the majestic 1100-year-old Gokstad ship at the Viking Ship Museum in Norway.
With the use of the oldest of Nordic instruments and poetic metres as well as lyrics written in Norwegian, Old Norse and Proto-Norse tongue, Wardruna is now, after nearly three years in the making, finally ready to return with the second album in the ‘Runaljod’ trilogy entitled ‘Yggdrasil’. Multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Einar Kvitrafn Selvik has, together with vocalists Kristian Espedal (aka Gaahl) and Lindy-Fay Hella, managed to make a strikingly beautiful and intense continuation of what was started with their first album, but without falling into the trap of merely repeating themselves. ‘Yggdrasil’ is also graced with guest appearances by renowned Icelandic composer Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson and Iceland’s leading rímur singer Steindór Andersen.
The ongoing ‘Runaljod’ trilogy is a musical rendition of the 24 runes in what is often referred to as the elder futhark. Some of the recordings are done outdoors in places or under circumstances of significance to each rune. Wardruna primarily use old and historical instruments such as primitive deer-hide frame drums, Kraviklyra, tagelharpe, mouth harp, goat horn, lur and more. Non-traditional instruments and other sources of sound like trees, rocks, water and torches are also used.
All of these elements are carefully woven into a rich musical landscape and complemented with whispering voices, melodic song and mighty choirs. Although Wardruna’s music share characteristics with music typically labeled as folk, world and/or ambient, none of these genres can really describe their unique style. It truly must be experienced.
‘Yggdrasil’ was written and recorded by Kvitrafn from spring 2010 to winter 2012 at his own Fimbulljóð studio and various outdoor locations.

ENSLAVED guitarist Ivar Bjørnson has been announced as one of the curators of Roadburn Festival 2015 alongside WARDRUNA's Einar Kvitrafn Selvik. As curators, both Ivar and Einar will personally select the bands for their curated Roadburn event, named ‘Houses of the Holistic’, and play special shows with ENSLAVED and WARDRUNA respectively as well.
The Norwegian pair, both former Roadburn performers, have played an important role in bringing together the past, present and future sounds of hard rock, progressive metal, and alternative scenes, which makes them the ideal choice to carry on the tradition that began in 2008.
One of the most hard-hitting and progressive bands to come out of Norway, ENSLAVED has drawn other musical genres and artistic expressions into the realm of metal, while being recognized for merging tradition and modernity in a unique blend of rock, prog and black metal, earning them Spellemann Awards (Norwegian Grammys) for much acclaimed and groundbreaking albums such as »Isa« (2004), »Ruun« (2006), and »Vertebrae« (2008) among others.
ENSLAVED 's performance, dubbed ‘House of Northern Gods’, will consist of a set list specially put together for ‘Houses of the Holistic’, featuring songs from the band's entire catalogue that embody the Norse gods, with accompanying visuals created by revered Romanian artist, Costin Chioreanu. Be prepared for a surprise or two, or even more.
Ivar Bjørnson comments: “To say that my dream as a kid was to one day curate the Roadburn Festival would perhaps be to take it a tad too far – but it isn’t that far from the truth. There’s some ridiculously big shoes to fill, but luckily negative pressure, idea draught and performance anxiety aren’t something I’m into. It is my favourite festival in one of my favourite parts of the world; so this is nothing short of one the biggest honours I’ve been given! It is a privilege to undertake this challenge in twosome with Einar; an artist I truly feel in tune with artistically and philosophically – now it is all about hard work and dedication to ensure that the audience and the festival itself is given a Friday to enjoy, experience and remember. I for one can’t wait!”
Roadburn Festival 2015 will run for four days from Thursday, April 9 to Sunday, April 12, 2015 at the 013 venue in Tilburg, The Netherlands. ‘Houses of the Holistic’, co-curated by Ivar Bjørnson will take place on Friday, April 10, 2015.

Haglhrið slær,
høgg i aks!
Deyr einn,
spirar einn.
Hail strikes
the ears of barley.
Death of one,
life of another.

Besides performing Skuggsjá, the sound of Norway’s Norse History, together with Wardruna, Enslaved will also perform a show dubbed 'House of Northern Gods', which will consist of a set list specially put together for ‘Houses of the Holistic', featuring songs from the band’s entire catalogue that embody the Norse gods, with accompanying visuals created by revered Romanian artist, Costin Chioreanu.
"The Friday show during Roadburn 2015 will indeed be a special one", says Ivar Bjørnson. "We have named the concert 'House of Northern Gods' and it will consist of a walk-through of an imaginary, magical house. It is a mental construction that could represent the mythological Valhalla with its inhabitants - or in Jung's school of psychology: the archetypical roles of the human psyche. This will be the foundation for the set-list and the framework around the concert; there's a stem of thematic songs from 'Allfadr Odinn' (the Paternal archetype) on 'Hordanes Land' in 1993 up to 'Materal' (the Maternal archetype) from 2012's 'RIITIIR' where various characters/ roles in the 'House of Northern Gods' are represented and materialized into music. These are the songs that will make up the Friday show at Roadburn 2015!”

WARDRUNA UPDATE: Special concert during Hole in the Sky, music video and album-update.
There is a lot going on for Wardruna these days. On august 27th they will perform a special concert in Bergen during Hole in the Sky. They will perform at Logen Teater and it will be no ordinary concert.
Wardruna will play with an expanded line- up, thirteen musicians will make Wardruna’s already powerful and magical musical expression even more massive.
Also Wardruna is proud to present their very first self-made music video. Since the inception of Wardruna their vision was that videos and other visual elements would be an important part of the project. This is merely the first step in that plan and Wardruna intend to continue developing this aspect of the project towards their next album.

The vinyl edition of "Runaljod - gap var Ginnunga" (2009) is now released through Alone Records / Burning World Records. It will be available in the Wardruna webshop within a couple of weeks. It will also be sold at the aforementioned concert.
Finally, a brief status update on the next Wardruna album from Kvitrafn: "The recurring question of when the next album will be finished is not easy to answer. I am well underway with the recordings and there is good progress in the work. Having said that, I must add that because of the demanding concepts behind these albums, I can not rush this process. I hope to be finished with the recordings next summer, but I can obviously not give any promises now. The only thing that matters now is to make music that I am satisfied with, no matter how long it will take. "
