Water rail
Another rail was calling close by. I do hope Walters has paired. Would be great to see them both together :-)

This guy showed up one summer a few years ago and ended up staying for a little over a month. He was weak and missing feathers so I fed him daily and made sure he had fresh water and he started to look quite dapper. He never shied-away from the camera and even seemed pleased to have the attention. He was friendly and followed my every move outside. He didn't have a band on his leg. I put word out for anyone missing a bird but no one claimed him. He stayed long enough to earn the name of Walter. I must say he was quite the charmer. One morning he flew off and I never saw him again but he left a lasting memory in my heart. Some photos have the best memories attached to them. This is one.
I do still have a few more pictures of Walter the Water rail in the archives. he was something special and never let me down. Always out for his snack within minutes. After about 6 weeks he just vanished
In 2018 Walter was rescued from a trap. When he was found he was near death. His left front paw had to be partially amputated due to his injury from the trap. As a result he could never be released back into the wild. But now he is thriving in his new home. Florida panthers are critically endangered in the wild- with only about 120-240 cats remaining. He is a beautiful cat and a great ambassador for people to learn more about Florida panthers.
At an exhibition of Walter Sickert paintings in Tate Britain, London. Several writers have suggested that Sickert may have been Jack the Ripper, though I think those theories have been largely discounted. He definitely did some weird paintings though.
Water rail
Walter was not keen on the snow. He came out several times before plucking up courage to walk across to his pellets this morning

Water rail, male
My favourite Water rail returned this morning. He walked up close looked into my eyes and ran down the platform for his pellets and returns many times for more while I was there :-)
Easy to see the difference in sexes now as he is noticeably bigger with a longer beak than Wander
Its native distribution is Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Virginia in the United States as well as Northeast Mexico. It is a perennial herb that grows to a height of around 2 feet with yellow flowers that bloom from May to September. It is named after Thomas Walter a botanist born in Britain who moved to Charleston, South Carolina in the 18th century.

Water rail, male
Good to catch up with Walter this morning. He was squealing close by for sometime before his brief visit. Hope to see him again soon
The switchbacks seen below are some of the 21 switchbacks on the West Rim Trail known as Walter's Wiggles. While the trail is very steep, it is paved, so we found it easy to ascend as it is unlike the rocky, rooty, muddy trails we hike in the Pacific NW.
Another shot taken a few weeks ago when my favourite Water rail returned. Yesterday I had him feeding a foot from my hand
I do think this is a new bird on the scene and not Walter. Quite small and I think male much like Walter might even be his boy but as soon as he slipped in the reeds Walter came out right beside me so it cant be him. The other bird with the long thinner bit darker beak also made an appearance. I guess thats why Walter has been acting strange as sometimes it isn't him and also they must be chasing each other in the reeds at times
