Customs House on the Bund was built between 1925 and 1927, replacing a smaller Customs House which stood on the same site.

The clock in the tower was the largest in Asia when it was built, its face measuring 5.4 metres in diameter with a 3.17 m long minute hand.

The buildng still houses the Shanghai Customs department, though China Customs also has a modern building on the Pudong side of Huangpu River - directly opposite the historic building.

The partial building at the bottom right hand corner is No 1 on the Bund - Asia Building. This image was captured late into the blue hour when the sky was almost black. As this is a close up of this section of the urban scene, no sky is seen within this image.

Building details below:

The former Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation headquarters was built between 1921 and 1923 and has a steel frame with a neo-classical outer style. Reflecting the seasonal variations common to Shanghai, the building was the first in Shanghai to have both heating and cooling systems. After the liberation in 1949 the building became the home of the Shanghai Municipal People's Government until 1995. Now it houses the Pudong Development Bank.

Shanghai is well-known for the Bund, a waterfront where the International Settlement used to reside. Along the whole stretch lies many buildings from Art Deco era which have been preserved to this day.

This was taken at a rather high ISO so some noise may be visible.

The Bund, which is also known as Waitan, is a waterfront area in central Shanghai. The Bund is famously known for the grand western-style buildings that were built in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries.

This region has a significant European influence, with the style of many structures most comparable to that of European cities, particularly Gothic, Baroque, Neoclassical, Romanesque, Art Deco, and Renaissance architecture. Additionally, some of the city's top eateries are located there. From the 1860s to the 1930s, it was the rich and powerful center of the foreign establishment in Shanghai, operating as a legally protected treaty port.

It was a familiar and unfamiliar feeling while visiting Shanghai, a vibrant blend of tradition and modernity. Shanghai’s essence: where East meets West, history intersects innovation, and tradition thrives alongside modernity.

Waitan is still showcasing the skyline of Pudong; the Oriental Pearl Tower light show offers breathtaking views, which reminds me of the experience walking on the glass-floored platform on one of the pearls years ago.

Due to light show, the crowd filled the waterfront along Waitan. The light shows lasted 5 minutes, showing Pudong skyline centered the distinctive spheres of Oriental Pearl Tower.

PS: China is developing dramatically in all aspects in the past years. Just mention a few feelings during this trip: Life is so convenient. Alipay and WeChat pay dominate daily transactions; Apps deliver meals, groceries, and medicine in 30 minutes; Taobao, JD.com offer same-day/next-day delivery for almost everything; Safe to walk at night in most area, no homeless people, crimes are rare… The streets are so clean, the flowers are everywhere along every road and street…

Hit "L" for a better view!

Hi everybody!

It has been a while since I posted my last photo. Today I decided to post a new one. I worked a lot for my university stuff and had a lack of creativity.

Today as I decided to upload a shot I wasn’t sure which I should take until I came across my Shanghai photos. I tried to edit this shot three times before but I never really liked the outcome. Even today I am still not sure if the perspective from where I have taken the shot is the optimum.

The bad thing about my POV was that the bund was closed due to city works for the EXPO. You see, the shot is old as the Expo in Shanghai is over for quite a while.

As I sometimes do, I have a song recommendation for you. It is the hard critizised song from Coldplay - Princess of China but it fits!

Coldplay - Princess of China

In my inactive time at Flickr I browsed your streams every now and then to keep updated about your work and I have to say I am impressed to be a part of this great community and moreover a contact of yours. Your streams are awesome an I like every little detail you work into your photos!

I really hope you enjoy this piece of modern Chinese architecture!

The Bund in Shanghai. Captured from the Oriental Pearl Tower.

This river divides Shanghai to the East, Pudong and the West, Puxi. Its a working delta to transport goods and tourists

Shanghai has this incredible tunnel that goes under the river to the Bund. It's just wild inside!

They have a series of robotic trains that shuttle people back and forth. Robotic doors whir open then shut again. The front of the capsule has a bubble-window that allows for a stunning view as you dip below the river and back up again. Colored lights in every lighting configuration fly by in beautiful colors. This is an amazing experience that I recommend if you ever get to Shanghai!

It was raining all the day, so we did the only possible thing..going out and shoot some pictures

Looking down the famous Bund row, as the nightly illumination is just being turned on.

The building with the clock tower to the left is Customs House, finished in 1927.

The tall building with the "crown" is the Bund Center (外滩中心) aka Bund Tower which houses the Westin Hotel. The roof structure shall symbolise a Magnolia, Shanghai's city flower.

The area centers on a section of Zhongshan Road (East Zhongshan Road No.1) within the former Shanghai International Settlement, which runs along the western bank of the Huangpu River in the eastern part of Huangpu. The area along the river faces the modern skyscrapers of Lujiazui in Pudong. The Bund usually refers to the buildings and wharves on this section of the road, as well as some adjacent areas.
