Piha is a coastal settlement in West Auckland, on the western coast of the Auckland Region in New Zealand. It is one of the most popular beaches in the area and a major day-trip destination for Aucklanders throughout the year, and especially in summer.
Piha is 39 kilometres west of Auckland city centre, on the Tasman Sea coast to the north of the Manukau Harbour, on the western edge of the Waitākere Ranges. Immediately to the north of Piha is Whites Beach, and immediately to the south is Mercer Bay; land access to both is only by foot. The nearest beaches accessible by road are Karekare to the south, and Anawhata to the north.
The area is traditionally a part of rohe of the Tāmaki Māori tribe Te Kawerau ā Maki. The area is named for Te Piha, the traditional name of Lion Rock which was later applied to the wider area, and refers to the pattern made when waves hit against the rock. The area was the location of many pā and villages, including a headland at Te Waha Point north of the beach, where many karaka trees associated with the former pā grow, and Lion Rock, which was the location of Whakaari pā. Archaeological surveys have shown the remains of platforms, midden and terraces on Lion Rock, as well as fragments of traditional textiles, dating back to a time before European contact. The earthworks of Whakaari pā are not well preserved due to erosion.
Mercer Bay to the south was traditionally known by the name Te Unuhanga o Rangitoto, and was named for Andrew Mercer, Auckland slater who received Crown grant in June 1866. The location is featured in the Te Kawerau ā Maki legend of early ancestor Tiriwa, who formed the bay by moving Rangitoto Island from the West coast to the Hauraki Gulf / Tīkapa Moana.
At the turn of the 20th century, holidaymakers would travel by coach from Glen Eden to stay at guest houses in Piha. In February 1939, two Australian visitors to Auckland, G R Mackey and J A Talbot, committed arson at a Piha batch. The fire was lit as a part of an insurance scam, and a body of a recently buried soldier was taken from Waikumete Cemetery and placed inside the batch.

It was amazing to see the black sand. I learned that it is primarily a black ironsand composed of titanomagnetite, a mixture of titanium and iron oxides from the erosion of volcanic rock.
This black sand is rich in heavy minerals like magnetite, ilmenite, and hematite. It is carried from volcanic sources like the Taupo Volcanic Zone or Mount Taranaki by rivers and coastal currents, creating the distinctive dark colour.
It was fun to see a handful of sand attach to a magnet our friend had brought along especially to show us.
The mountains in this picture are part of the Waitakere Ranges.

Karekare is a black sand beach. We went down into the Pararaha Valley and along the beach to the "main" road where, with five minutes walk there was a waterfall. A long hike but beautiful scenery.
Waitakere Ranges, Auckland, New Zealand...
This is where I grew up, between the ages of 4 and 10. This was my local beach. So many fond memories. And yes, the sand is black - volcanic sand :)
Whatipu is part of the iconic 'Hillary Trail" a 80km walk along some of NZ most spectacular west coast line. I encourage anyone to come for a visit. This spot in particular is quiet magnificent . You have the beach on the far right and the length of the waitakere ranges on the left. You feel small and wonderful just standing here and breathing the fresh air.
The black sand is native in the area as it is volcanic sand.

Today Flanshaw Road Primary School, a school of just over 350 students from Waitakere, in New Zealand took part in the 350 global climate change campaign. The 'green dream' team has designed and planted a nature walk in the school, and wanted to participate in the day.
The students are proudly holding their recycled, reusable and self-decorated 'Bags Not' shopping bags with messages and images about looking after our planet and 350. 'Bags Not' is part of the campaign to make Waitakere City the first New Zealand city to rid itself of plastic bags.

Bethells Beach is one of my favourite beaches. It is wild and rugged. The sand is black and you always have plenty of space to yourself. For some reason I have always struggled to capture it, I think this photo is best so far, hinting
at what it is like to walk along it.
