San Clemente, CA

I haven't been on Flickr much lately as I have been packing for a big move coming up next week and am trying to get our affairs in order before heading out of CA.

I found a couple of hours this past Sunday to make a quick trip to the San Clemente Car Show on Del Mar. Anybody who knows me knows I don't know much about cars. To me, a car is a car is car! They all do the same thing and get you where you need to go. That being said, I still like to look.

Being California, there was an abundance of VW wagons lined up...and many with surfboards strapped to their roofs. The one thing that caught my eye about them was all of the different colors and their shine in the sunlight.

Anyhow, it was a fun couple of hours and I'm glad I got to stroll through San Clemente one last time! See you guys soon.

A badge from a Volkswagen Karmann Ghia (1970's ish). The design looks remarkably similar to the latest incarnation of the VW logo.

The VW Bus Logo...

In around 1974 my best friends dad decided it was time to retire the family's Volkswagen bus, When I heard that the bus was going to the scrap yard, I hustled over and begged Mr. Cooper for the logo on the front of the van. When asked why I wanted it so badly. I told him I was going to hang it on my wall in my basement bedroom. He agreed.

I remember using a large screwdriver to pry it off and it was so rusted it popped off without too much effort, I took it home, polished it up and on the wall it went.

In the many years since, it has travelled from home to home as my parents moved, to our first apartment after we got married and finally to the house we now live in. For the past thirty years has been tucked away in a box filled with other childhood memories in the basement,

Last spring after of a large purge, I found it in an old cardboard box under the basement stairs. It brought back so many memories for me. I just had to photograph it and tuck it away for another thirty years. Lol. 😂

Thank you for visiting for marking my photo as a favorite and for the kind comments,

The Subaru Sambar is a cabover kei truck and microvan manufactured by Subaru, a division of Fuji Heavy Industries, specifically for the Japanese market. It is Japan's first , shorthand for "kei class truck" and is still in production. The Sambar is available in both microvan and Kei truck (Pickup truck style) to fulfill the Kei car guidelines. Still popular in the domestic market, the Sambar continues to be produced in Japan, China as well as in Finland with a joint venture with Elcat Automotive.

Since its introduction in 1961, the Sambar has used a rear engine, rear wheel drive format (with optional 4WD from 1980 on), with the first two generations using the air-cooled engine from the Subaru 360, and later generations using the water-cooled engine from the Subaru Rex, Vivio and the Pleo.

Until 2012 the Sambar model was still using the Sixth Generation chassis and body with updated fascia. It was the first Kei truck that used a cabover design, with the passenger cabin over the engine. The current generation is a rebadged version of the Daihatsu Hijet/Atrai.

The name Sambar is very similar to the top trim package for the Volkswagen Type 2 called the Samba introduced in 1951, which also used an air-cooled engine installed in the back, utilizing rear-wheel-drive, and was available in pickup configurations with fold-down beds.

Spirit of Edmonds Car Show and Street Festival Burnaby British Columbia, Canada.

The fifth generation Sambar was introduced in 1990. Engine regulations for displacement size were increased and the Sambar's engine was upgraded to 660 cc. For the 4WD version it sold as Subaru Dias Wagon as a permanent trim model. Commercials in Japan used Kuniko Yamada, a Japanese comedian.

The tradition of using the engine in Subaru's kei car offering, the Subaru Vivio's engine was shared in this version of the Sambar, the EN07. The engines piston amount increased to four cylinders and 55 PS (54 bhp) was available with an optional supercharger model, coupled with fuel injection. An automatic transmission was offered in the form of Subaru's ECVT system in tandem with full-time 4WD and a viscous coupling differential.

1994 saw a full model change with a body similar to the Domingo, with the EF12 three-cylinder engine's displacement increased to 1200 cc and SOHC borrowed from the Subaru Justy. A maximum seating capacity of seven was possible. October 1995 saw the elimination of the ECVT transmission due to drivability issues and a 3-speed automatic was available instead, coupled to the EMPi 46 PS (45 bhp) engine.

I love this shot of the driver in his VW bus. What a contrast to the hot rods and other classic cars with huge engines out front. I don't know what men think but I do know that this car would be a "chick magnet" for me anyway, LOL.

The people as well as the cars made the Cruise on Central a joy to attend and photograph. My thanks to all who brought some fun and color into our world in Phoenix on a beautiful Saturday evening.

8-bit conversion of the VW logo.

I took a picture of this Volkswagen New Beetle before, but I had to take a special picture of the peace sign directly below the VW logo on the rear.

This is the second New Beetle I've seen adorned with a peace sign. To own a Volkswagen is to believe in giving peace a chance.

Look closely, and you'll see me reflected in both the Volkswagen logo and the sheetmetal. :-)

I couldn't regain the nice red in this shot. any hints on how to do so would be welcome. I had a go at it - but maybe the info is lost in the shadow of it all.

I took some more arsty pictures of cars from my collection of diecast Volkswagen models, complete with an accompanying VW logo. Again, I had to lie the model cars on their sides, with a flat surface underneath the wheels, to properly display the logo.

If this diecast model Mark 4 Jetta looks tiny, it should. It's the size of a Matchbox vehicle - made in China, where they've been making real VWs since the mid-eighties.

Volkswagen, For the Love of the Car

I took a photo of this VW badge way back in May. With all the frost & snow about though, I thought this would make for a good contrast with Mays effort:

The pop-up bunk on this 1977 Campmobile was appropriately adorned with the Volkswagen logo - one of the most recognizable logos in modern times.

Thie 1977 Camper was painted in a chartreuse green color, as many Buses and Campers at the show were.

Oh yeah, the owner wanted to make it clear that this camper does not use water to cool the engine. Note the license plate. ;-)

A 1977 Camper - which featured a two-liter aircooled engine with electronic fuel injection - included fold-out beds, a food storage bin, and an icbox, among other amenities.

I also have this stunning new Beetle convertible model, bought in, of all places, a chain drugstore.

I once sneaked up on a friend of mine in the park and rolled this toy car past her sight. Then I walked up to her and said, "It was such a nice day, I thought I'd take the convertible!" :-D
