Although I am lucky enough to be within easy driving distance of several toy specific retailers, large and small, finding decent 1/64 models there on a regular basis has proved increasingly difficult over the last few years. Yes you will find Hot Wheels but depressingly you will also find masses of deeply unpleasant HTI generics too. The vast choice of brands we once enjoyed have been deported from these shores with very little prospect of seeing them any time soon!

My local Toyland store rarely comes up with the goods these days so todays visit was something of an unexpected surprise. Not only had they restocked their Siku display with the usual overpriced singles but they also have now got in some new three vehicle sets which shock horror are actually sensibly priced. Well, sensibly priced for a Siku.......

I will always maintain that Siku models are quite expensive when compared to some other brands such as Majorette who invariably offer the same quality and features, especially as they too are now made in China. But, compared to say a basic Hot Wheels or Matchbox you can see why this German toy company remains highly respected with collectors and children alike. This looks to be a new Ambulance based livery for their VW Golf MK6 2.0 TDI casting which looks bright, clean and modern. Typical Siku built quality means a reassuringly weighty feel, lots of fine detailing and solid feeling opening doors.

You have to love and admire the Germans for their precision and accuracy. This isn't just a VW Golf, its a VW Golf 2.0 TDI as per its rear badging and baseplate details which highlights the supreme effort which goes in to making your average Siku product.

OK, its no premium in the same vein as a Greenlight or Auto World product, its not meant to be an adult aimed model, its priced at the upper end of the pocket money market.

For your above Mattel price you can expect to find a weighty all metal body complete with opening front doors, full detailing and clear lense headlights. Thankfully Siku have appeared to upgrade their wheels recently to look more like alloys rather than the previous cheap and nasty plasticky efforts!

Siku are well known for their excellent Emergency themed models, many of which are either generic or regional specific in the liveries used. I'm assuming this particular Fire & Rescue set of clothes belongs to no particular country or Fire Service in particular?

In a sea of Hot Wheels and HTI generics its good to know the quality products of Siku are still pretty well easy to find here in the U.K. Costing appreciably more they do of course offer a higher level of fixtures and fittings compared to a basic HW with this rather chiselled looking VW Golf 2.0 TDI benefitting from opening doors and clear lense headlights.

Since my local Toymaster stores changed to Toyland a few years ago their stock of Siku has become more limited and usually concentrated on the much more expensive gift sets and larger scale farm machinery. Thankfully Toymaster still exists in other parts of the country and a recent weekend trip to the North Yorkshire coastal town of Whitby saw me visit their Toymaster store which is also combined with the local Post Office. They had a bankrupt inducing sized range of Siku and so I had to be very selective in what I chose! LOL. Quite a few toy makers produce their own versions of the VW Golf MK6 but surely this Siku is one of the best in this scale with its solid weighty feel and flawless metallic finish. As you'd expect detailing is top notch too with glazed lights, accurate badging and opening doors which close with a reassuring thunk. Not cheap but worth every penny! Mint and boxed.
