The African bush elephant (Loxodonta africana), also known as the African savanna elephant, is the largest living terrestrial animal with bulls reaching a shoulder height of up to 4 m (13 ft). Both sexes have tusks, which erupt when they are 1–3 years old and grow throughout life.

It is distributed across 37 African countries and inhabits forests, grasslands and woodlands, wetlands and agricultural land. It is a social mammal, traveling in herds composed of cows and their offspring. Adult bulls usually live alone or in small bachelor groups. It is a herbivore, feeding on grasses, creepers, herbs, leaves and bark.

Since 2004, it has been listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. It is threatened foremost by habitat destruction, and in parts of its range also by poaching for meat and ivory.

They can weigh 7 t (7.7 short tons). The heaviest male on record weighed 10.4 t (11.5 short tons) and was shot in 1974 in Angola. Females are much smaller at about 2.2–2.6 m (7.2–8.5 ft) tall at the shoulder and up to 4 t (4.4 short tons) in weight. Elephants attain their maximum stature when they complete the fusion of long-bone epiphyses, occurring in males around the age of 40 and females around the age of 25. - Wikipedia

The leopard (Panthera pardus) is one of the five species in the genus Panthera, a member of the Felidae. The leopard occurs in a wide range in sub-Saharan Africa and parts of Asia and is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List because leopard populations are threatened by habitat loss and fragmentation and are declining in large parts of the global range. In Hong Kong, Singapore, Kuwait, Syria, Libya, Tunisia and most likely in Morocco, leopard populations have already been extirpated.

Contemporary records suggest that the leopard occurs in only 25% of its historical global range. Leopards are hunted illegally, and their body parts are smuggled in the wildlife trade for medicinal practices and decoration.

Compared to other wild cats, the leopard has relatively short legs and a long body with a large skull. It is similar in appearance to the jaguar, but generally has a smaller, lighter physique. Its fur is marked with rosettes similar to those of the jaguar, but the leopard's rosettes are smaller and more densely packed, and do not usually have central spots as the jaguar's do. Both leopards and jaguars that are melanistic are known as black panthers.

The leopard is distinguished by its well-camouflaged fur, opportunistic hunting behaviour, broad diet, and strength (which it uses to move heavy carcasses into trees), as well as its ability to adapt to various habitats ranging from rainforest to steppe, including arid and montane areas, and its ability to run at speeds of, up to 58 kilometres per hour (36 mph). - Source Wikipedia

Once the life blood of the north shore, shuttling pellet after steaming pellet of iron ore to the docks of Lake Superior, two of the Missabe's finest still make their keep along the banks of the big lake. The pair of Maroon warriors are seen here, shuffling cars around Proctor yard.

I still want to find the joy in the small and large things in life. I don't want to stop being myself, laughing, listening to music, drawing.....loving cats and coffee...it's the small things that lead to big happiness.

This current terror is holding me hostage. I'm forgetting simple things and I am having more middle of the night panic attacks. And, at the same time, I am still very privileged and I just have to remember that looking for relief in every day moments is a sign of that whereas others are just struggling to survive.

I feel like I don't have the right to be depressed but I still can't help it. It's a horrible place to be. And, I want to be hopeful and not helpless but I feel like all the magic and wonder has been extinguished from this world these days. I miss my old self, the old reality...before I saw things for what they really were and felt gravely disappointed in people.

Just an honest ramble. I still think art is important but I have to work to engage and not just completely disappear like a whisper in the night that you hear from a ghost.

Happy Caturday!

The lion species, also known as Panthera leo, is one of the largest species on earth. Typically weighing 300 to 550 pounds, the lion can vary from a light buff color to a deep reddish brown color. Surprisingly, there is also the rare white lion found in the wild. Easily recognized by it’s thick mane, the lion is also muscular and has a loud, deafening roar. Unfortunately, as majestic lions may seem, they are slowly disappearing.

As far back as 3 million years ago, lions roamed freely across Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East . Today, lions live freely in their natural habitat in only two locations, Africa and Asia. In addition, some lions are bread in captivity.

Lions are listed as a vulnerable species according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. Though they are not under the classification of an endangered species, they still face obstacles that endanger their survival.

Currently, there are about 30,000 to 100,000 lions left on earth. In the past few decades, lion populations have decreased almost by half. Trophy hunting and loss of natural habitat are the primary reasons for the diminishing lion population.

I read a story from animal rights activists about something that happened in my town. A cat, loved by the locals, was let inside a company building every evening so it wouldn’t have to be outside in the cold. One day, the cat didn’t show up in the evening because someone tortured it to death.

This is just an average story from the daily reality of animal protection. Hell is created by humans on Earth.

The photo shows a cat from a colony. These cats are neutered and fed.

You’ve seen me at my hardest point

In the beginning, people think vulnerability will make you weak, but it does the opposite. It shows you're strong enough to care.

I've had this capture in my head for a long time, and once a misty morning arrived I took myself to this lane and waited for someone to pass by. I waited until the guy in this image was just starting to fade into the mist before starting my captures. My aim was to capture both the solitude of a lone figure in the mist, and the vulnerability of a single person compared with the greatness of nature towering above, and framing the image. The ethereal light was just an added bonus.

Owning our story can be hard but not nearly as difficult as spending our lives running from it.

Embracing our vulnerabilities is risky but not nearly as dangerous as giving up on love and belonging and joy—the experiences that make us the most vulnerable.

courage means different things to different people. and its meaning can change with the situation. yet i think courage, too often, is associated with strength and armor. to me, courage means letting down my guard; being vulnerable and true; staying open to whatever arises. courage isn't about fighting; it’s about surrendering in a brave way—showing up with an open heart; cultivating compassion; sharing the raw places; letting love in.

tomorrow, mark and i leave for iowa. six days after my mom’s death, we celebrate her life within the framework of a funeral. part of my healing is to speak at her service—to speak from my unguarded heart.

thank you, flickr friends, for your love and support. next week, i’ll catch up with you all—with your beautiful, unique ways of seeing the world. until then, i rest in your good wishes. may we all find more moments of genuine courage.
