In 1730 a simultaneous eruption of 30 craters affected one third of the island, burying villages and covering much of the most fertile land with a 33 feet thick layer of lava. Lava lake ..The fountains have moved to the rim of the lake, leaving the middle section free of smoke and exposing its beautiful zig zag lines dividing the thin plates of crust.
