BEG D1 und D2 haben den Vulkan-Express von Oberzissen bis Engeln bespannt und können nach anstrengender Bergfahrt in herbstlicher Umgebung abkoppeln. Die Fahrgäste haben derweil die Gelegenheit, bis zur Rückfahrt die gastronomischen Angebote im Bahnhof zu nutzen.

Afrika - Africa - vulkaan - vulcano - Erta Ale - Noord-Oost Ethiopië
Net voor zonsondergang komen we aan bij de kraterwand van de vulkaan.
We kunnen afdalen in de krater op een gestolde lavabodem. Er is in de krater een tweede kuil met vloeibare lava. De wind zit goed en blaast de giftige dampen uit onze richting. We wandelen over de gestolde lava even tot aan de rand van de muil van 'het woeste beest'. We kunnen genieten van een angstaanjagend ritmisch gebrom van de actieve vulkaan. De gloeiende lava is steeds in een borrelende beweging met regelmatige ontploffingen in een niet ophoudend vuurwerk.
We slapen in open lucht aan de kraterwand! Oppassen dus, niet slaapwandelen of je duikelt in de dieperik!
Erta Ale is a continuously active basaltic shield volcano in the Afar Region of northeastern Ethiopia, the most active volcano in Ethiopia. It is in the Afar Depression, a badlands desert area spanning the border with Eritrea, and the volcano itself is surrounded completely by an area below sea level, making it a relatively low-elevation volcano.

Erta Ale is een actieve schildvulkaan gelegen in de Afar-driehoek, in het noordoosten van Ethiopië. Het is de meest actieve vulkaan van Ethiopië.
Erta Ale is 613 meter hoog, en is een van de enige vier vulkanen ter wereld met een lavameer op de top. Dit lavameer is het langst bestaande lavameer ter wereld.

Mit den altmodischen Triebwagen der 950 mm-Schmalspurbahn der Ferrovia Circumetnea (FCE) kann man ab der Station Catania-Borgo in der Via Cadorna bis Giarre-Riposta preiswert in einem gemütlichen Tagesausflug fast den gesamten Ätna umrunden. Die Bahn, deren erster Streckenabschnitt 1895 eröffnet wurde, wird heute hauptsächlich von Schülern aber auch von Touristen benutzt, zumal man eine längere Fahrtunterbrechung in Randazzo zum Besuch der ganz aus Lava erbauten Stadt nutzen kann (siehe hierzu mein Album Randazzo).
Die Fahrt führt durch die üppige Vegetation rund um den Ätna vorbei an zahlreichen Lavafeldern und Basaltformationen, immer mit dem Blick auf den Vulkan, dessen Aussehen sich unterwegs ständig ändert, so dass er manchmal wie ein anderer Berg erscheint.
Im September 2010 wurden an der Strecke Bauarbeiten durchgeführt, so dass zwischen Bronte und Randazzo ein FCE-Bus eingesetzt wurde. Ab Randazzo ging es dann zusammen mit vielen Schülern in einem Triebwagen weiter nach Giarre-Riposto an der Küste, wo die FCE-Strecke endet und man auf einen Zug der FS umsteigen muss.
